COLDWATER – Friday’s marquee Midwest Athletic Conference match up between defending state champions Marion Local (Division V) and host Coldwater (D-IV) lived up to expectations. Then the second quarter started.
Thanks to a bevy of big plays, the standing room only crowd that emptied $8,239 into the 50/50 raffle was treated to a game worthy of the hype as Coldwater turned a close game into a rout in the second half en route to a 33-14 win.
The Cavaliers survived five interceptions by quarterback Corey Klenke to beat the Flyers by 19 points. That’s how crazy – and entertaining – it was.
Coldwater, ranked No. 1 in the ONN/Ohio High D-IV Power Poll improved to 4-0, while Marion, ranked No. 5 in the D-V poll, dropped to 3-1.
“There were several big plays that you think about and wonder what would have happened if they would have gone different,” Marion Local head coach Tim Goodwin said. “But the bottom line is we couldn’t move the ball. Our defense hung in there just like I thought they would. The key was what could our offense do.

The Rays youth didnt show at the end of the year. Will it show in the playoffs?
As of the other half of this series. The Twins are playing Minnesota Twin baseball - and I mean that as a compliment. Ron Gardenhire has to considered one of the best managers in the game. The White Sox have a lineup full of power and have lived and died by the home run all season. Will that continue? Most of the White Sox have been there before. Will their experience count in a series against the youthful Rays. It is still 0-0 in the 7th, so I cant lean either way with who the Rays are playing.
The Result: There is no place like home, and the Rays move on in 5 games.
Boston Red Sox vs. The Los Angeles Anaheim Orange County Burbank Angels
Breakdown: No sooner did I jump off the Rays/Sox series, and Thome just hit a bomb. I mean a BOMB. The Boston Red Sox are back to defend their title and when healthy, I would take the Red Sox starting pitching in a 5-game series. The keyword: HEALTHY. There are question marks surrounding the health of Josh Beckett, who makes any pitching staff the best in the playoffs. The Angels also have a superior bullpen - the Red Sox bullpen isnt bad, just the Angels is that much better. Sciosia has this team manufacturing runs and also hitting home runs.

Getting too distracted by video games lately.
Had a chance to play Wii Fit around my cousin's house and loved it! XD Soccer and Hula Hoop being a personal favorite. It is a little embarrassing to play when your relatives and family are sitting around watching you and laughing their asses off whenever you get cleated in the face (virtually, of course).
Also been playing Sonic Adventures 2: Battle like mad this past week (loaned from my cousin since I don't personally own the game) and I'm obsessed with the Chao Garden again~! @_@ Damn, they're too cute!

Also going down video game memory lane, I discovered the name of that machine me and my brother fondly remembered playing whenever we visit our relatives in Swindon, the Vectrex.

Both conservative and liberal leaning Hollywood filmmakers are hoping to sway the November election with a couple of films that they hope will become their own "October Surprise". However, it is highly unlikely that either film will pack theaters and both will likely be quick to end up on DVDs that will make better Frisbees than anything. Unfortunately both a film by Oliver Stone about George Bush entitled "W" and an anti-Michael Moore film, AN AMERICAN CAROL, really seem to miss their mark by miles.
Both films attempt to use some sense of larger than life parody, exaggeration and comedy, especially the conservative leaning anti-Michael Moore film, which falls into the shallow one note attacks of many conservatives who accuse others of not being patriotic or use shallow one inch deep personal attacks rather than intellectualize the arguments of their political rivals.
Where the anti-Michael Moore film goes horribly wrong is the absurd assumption that Michael Moore is anti-American and not patriotic. The real Michael Moore may be left leaning politically, but that hardly means that he would support doing away with the 4th of July like the outrageous character in the film. The real Michael Moore is mainly a consumer advocate concerned with the public abuses by some large corporations or some lawmakers who are pawns of these corporate swindlers. And the cast of AN AMERICAN CAROL which includes some like Bill O'Reilly are hardly widely considered as masters of comedy by any means. And the Michael Moorelike character in the film is played by Kevin Farley, the younger and far less talented brother of the late comic, Chris Farley. Other than bringing in gross obesity to the role, Farley really brings in little to the film.
Producer/Director David Zucker used to be known for some pretty good comedy gems like AIRPLANE! or the Leslie Nielsen NAKED GUN films. And the aging Leslie Neilsen does play some small role in this film. But it hardly holds a stick to these past achievements by any means. And with a cast of fellow conservative leaning actors like Kelsey Grammer, Trace Adkins, Jon Voight and Dennis Hopper, the Republican leaning Zucker has really tipped his hand from making films for all viewers, producing a biased right leaning personal attack on Moore and a pointless political propaganda film that absolutely misses the moral calling that draws the real life Moore to produce films attacking corporate corruption and naked greed.
It's almost like 1950's type redbaiting to continue to attack the patriotism of many liberals or even leftists, yet this is also part of this film's shallow attack on Moore. The real Michael Moore was brought up in a good Irish Catholic family where he once considered becoming a Catholic priest. It is this moral background deeply embedded in his early Catholic faith that has most encouraged Moore's battle at what he most likely considers to be corporate immorality and sin that has most likely inspired his moral crusades against corporate sins in the health care industry and other areas. Zucker's mindless film never digs this deep by any means, instead showcases the grossly overweight and talentless Farley as a complete boob who hates America. Simply outrageous trash can material at it's very best.
Liberal leaning, conspiracy theorist filmmaker, Oliver Stone's W film has some faults of it's own as well. Oliver Stone is indeed a top flight filmmaker compared to Zucker who mainly uses endless sight gags in many of his films thinly glued together with a lightweight premise. Zucker uses a premise, any premise in fact, just to hang a few jokes and sight gags on. But Oliver Stone is by contrast a real and true and complete filmmaker who is certainly capable of making a great film if the subject is right.

Shockingly, Politkovskayas murder was not an isolated incident, but rather, a disturbing addition to an ongoing purging of journalists critical of the Putin and Medvedev administrations. The most recent in the purge was Magomed Yevloyev, owner of ingushetiay.ru, a website critical of Ingushetiya President and close friend to Putin, Murat Zyazikov. Immediately upon arriving in Ingushetiyas capital city of Magas, Yevloyev was forced into a police car and hours later dumped on the side of the road with a bullet in his head. The Russian government responded to this issue, stating that the unlikely Yevloyev had reached for a policemans gun during the drive and the gun went off, shooting Yevloyev in the head.
Worse than the actual killings themselves is the lack of thorough investigation of these murders, a suspicious indication of state involvement. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) sites at least twelve murders of Russian oppositional journalists, not including Yevloyev, all of which remain unsolved and without competent investigation. Included in these killings is the particularly chilling murder of editor-in-chief of the investigatory Tolyattinskoye Obezreniye, Aleksei Sidorov. Reminiscent of the assassination of Leon Trotsky, Sidorov was stabbed in the chest with an ice pick outside of his apartment.
In fact, so atrocious are the human rights violations against vocal dissidents of the Russian Federation, that the CPJ has ranked Russia the ninth worst country in regard to freedom of the press. According to CPJs statistics (based on a ratio of unsolved murders of journalists per 1 million inhabitants), Russia is more repressive than turbulent nations such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, and is ranked only slightly more safe than countries such as Nepal or Afghanistan.
Not only does the Russian government repress and oppress dissidents, but it also pays a pretty penny to keep the mainstream media staffed with pro-governmental supporters who report the Putin-friendly version of the news. One of the effects seen of this was Putins approval rating during his presidency. As late as July 2007, he enjoyed a cushy and popular 80% stamp of approval. Undoubtedly, his photo shoots in the woods with his shirt off, holding an AK-47, or that of him in his Judo outfit, or that of him yet again appearing shirtless on fishing trips, have won him much popularity among the people. Ladies swoon at his beefcake-like photos and there is even a cult-following of the young in Russia who nearly deify him: Pop songs are written about him, propaganda praises his name, and many Russians feel that he has revamped national pride and identity, similar to that which existed during Imperial Russia. However, such strong feelings of national pride caused by Putin and the inflated high-approval ratings are a result of the aforementioned controlled media. During the Second Chechen War, when Russias military bombed purely civilian targets, carried out extrajudicial executions of prisoners and civilians, and was even accused of using tactics ranging from rape, abduction and torture, the average Russian citizen heard little of Russias atrocities. Only the victories of the Russian army were reported alongside the shocking and horrifying deeds of the Chechen rebels tactics, including the Beslan school hostage crisis in 2004, where rebels took approximately 1,200 people captive in a local grade school.
Likewise, the use of what Barack Obama in the September presidential debate deemed as and actions of the Russian military in Georgia were not widely publicized in the Russian media. Even Politkovskayas idea of the internet, where information is freely available seems no longer truly free: Putin continues to extend his long arm online this time by paying governmental supporters to release propaganda in his favor. For instance, European Digital Rights (EDR), an organization devoted to protecting the freedom of information in Europe, observed one such incident out of many. An anti-Kremlin march was being organized by bloggers protesting the Russian government. Within hours of finding out about the protest, pro-Putin bloggers swamped the internet with information about a pro-Kremlin march, so much so that they crowded out all oppositional blogs online. Included with Putins new task of controlling a new form of media, is his idea of starting a separate Russian internet, isolated from that of the rest of the global community. Under lightly veiled concerns about financial hacking and the spread of child pornography, this new internet would greatly increase the ease at which it could be controlled, which is precisely what Putin intends to do.
With the ongoing suppression and murders of oppositional journalists adjoined with Putins dominance of the old media and seemingly inevitable domination of the new, one can only be reminded of the Soviet Unions iron grip on the media and the duping deceit of its citizens. The exception is that the Russian Federation now considers itself a democracy. However, progress cannot truly be made and democracy cannot truly exist where the media is controlled by the government, facts are distorted or omitted, and opposition is crushed.

FINAL - USA 1 - 6 Italy. That's it from the Maracanãzinho. We'll be back later with a bigger wrap up. The U.S. put in a good effort today but eventually the quality of the Italians told. The U.S. goes searching for a win against Thailand on Oct. 4, so not much time to rest.

30 min - Lovely combo from Chile and Myers but Myers can't get the shot away. Yellow cards to both Chile and Jacobson, not sure what for. Well, Jacobson's was for a foul...

28 min - Richey with another save as Italy work a nice wall pass down the right flank.

27 min - Hammes now with a shot and it's deflected away by the Italian fullback. Soon after Naumoski blazes over. The U.S. is getting some looks here in the 2nd half.

26 min - Good play by the U.S. and Stewart finds Wiesner in the area. Glorious chance for the U.S.! Feller with a huge save for Italy though.

23 min - Off the line by Apple! A well worked freekick freed up an opportunity but Apple was there to hit the ball away. Corner to the U.S.

23 min - Italy with good possession but the U.S. is hanging tough. The game is getting more phsyical too as both Jacobson and Stewart go in tough on challenges. Richey now mixes it up with Morgado and a free kick to Italy in a dangerous spot.

22 min - Chile with a good tackl to get back for defensive cover. Italy with a corner.

21 min - And we're underway for the second half! Italy flashes a shot wide from a set piece.

2nd Half is about to start here and both teams are out.

HALFTIME - Well the U.S. took the lead but Italy fought back through two well worked goals. U.S. with it all to do in the second half. The halftime soundtrack features an Usher remix and some songs by The Ting Tings.

16 min - Some good play from Jacobson and Stewart and Jacobson flashes a shot just wide of the Italy goal.

14 min - Italy is increasing their pressure on the U.S. here, those two goals have really energized them. The U.S. needs to get something going.

3 min - Italy with the possession here early on but they lose it out of play and the U.S. gets a chance to regroup.

2 min - Italy hit the post and ball bounces away. Clever attempt from Morgado as he goes five-hole on Richey, but the post was on its best behavior for the U.S.

2 min - Italy with the first chance of the game as Richey is forced into a save.

STAR-NEWS FOOTBALL RANKINGS EXPLAINED
1. ST. FRANCIS (3-0) -- (Previously No. 1) The Golden Knights are holding strong to the No. 1 spot. They played impressive against Burroughs last week. Aside from having a great coaching staff led by Jim Bonds and a superb running back in Dietrich Riley, St. Francis has a great supporting cast in quarterback Justin Sciarra who completed 11 of 15 passes for 103 yards and one touchdown. Evan King is another solid back. He doesn't have the speed like Riley but he is a heckuva strong player, like when he ran over two or three defenders at the goal to score. Chris Sember played well at receiver and Malik Speed gives the Golden Knights another speedster. Don't be surprised of St. Francis blows up Rio Mesa.
2. MUIR (2-1) -- (Previously No. 2) The Mustangs probably played their toughest games in the nonleague season. Beating the likes of Diamond Ranch and Venice helps Muir make a strong case for the No. 1 spot. But lets be honest, I think they're at least half a step behind St. Francis. Muir will probably go unbeaten the rest of the season. They had a week off so expect Muir to light it up against Glendale. It'll be close to start but the Mustangs pull away big time in the second half.
3. ROSEMEAD (2-1) -- (Previously No. 3) Lets be honest, in this area there is St. Francis, Muir and then everybody else. Besides those two teams, I think the Panthers can compete with just about everybody else in the area including a healthy Arcadia team. Rosemead is very physical up front, arguably the most physical team aside from the two teams above. Tra Sumlar did not play last week but to see Rosemead get blown out was a bit of a surprise. The Panthers are the kind of team year in and year out where you can always count on them to have a 7-3, 8-2 season. Rosemead will prove to be too much for Temple City on Friday.
4. SAN MARINO (3-0) -- (Previously No. 5) So the Titans beat what is supposed to be a good La Salle team but aside from that San Marino has not been tested. Hoover was a nice confident-booster so expect the Titans to finally get challenged when they host Cantwell. Still, it should not go unnoticed the fact that this Titans team is a much different team we almost sadly were beginning to get used to. San Marino can put up some points and if they can do the same against Cantwell, which I think they can even though Robledo doesn't think so, then we'll find out how good these guys really are. It won't get any easier for San Marino the following week when they take on San Gabriel, the supposed football program sponsored by yours truly and the Star-News. Ha, hilarious.
5. SAN GA
IEL (2-2) -- (Previously No. 8) The Matadors move up three spots from last week. The Matadors rolled through South Pasadena but had a hard time against Cathedral and Serra. The true measuring stick was going to be Temple City which had just come off a tough loss to Alhambra. San Gabriel proved its worth when it initiated a 90-yard drive which proved to be the winning drive. I said the TC-SG game was going to be close and that the Matadors would pull away. People called me crazy but that's exactly how it turned out.
6. ARCADIA (1-2) -- (Previously No. 4) The Apaches proved that when healthy they can compete. The team we saw against St. Francis and Lynwood is clearly not the same without Todd Golper. Fortunately for Arcadia they play Hoover so they should record a W and build its confidence with plenty of scoring. If the Apaches struggle WITHOUT Golper, who is not expected to play, then Arcadia is in much more trouble than it thinks. If Golper returns healthy by the Glendale game then don't expect Arcadia to miss the playoffs. It should be noted that Golper has not played since St. Francis and won't play this week. My feeling? I feel sorry on the first running play by Glendale. That RB is gonna get KO'd.
7. MONROVIA (2-2) -- (Previously No. 7) We all knew Marquise Williams was talented. And with a new coach it was only a matter of time until Williams felt comfortable with the new offense and schemes. It's looking like he, Nick Bueno and Kendall Boggs are finally feeling comfortable. And it's looking like Monrovia and SM will be vying for the Rio Hondo League title. It might be premature to say such a thing but at this point my money's on those two programs. A lot of guys don't know about Beckman but having previously worked in Orange County I can tell you Monrovia shutdown a good offensive team in the Patriots. I feel that victory was when the Wildcats finally turned the corner.
8. MARANATHA (3-0) -- (Previously No. 9) Maranatha had a bye but still they moved up largely in part because of TC's loss and yet another come-from-behind victory by Alhambra. I would bet that if the Minutemen played against Alhambra or TC that would be a close game. Maranatha needs to take care of business on Friday against Mojave if it wants to stay at No. 8. Last year, the Minutemen were humbled when they traveled to Mojave and lost. To put it best, Coach Joel Murphy said it was embarrassing.
9. ALHAM
A (2-1) -- (Previously No. 10) These boys need to get their act together. They've been having to come-from-behind in their last two wins. Mitchell Crockom, as good as he is, is proving to be prone to fumbles. Dude needs to hold on to the ball tighter. Alhambra is an OK team right now at best but if they can find a way to add a running game to its attack then they can become a superb team and a force to be reckoned in the Almont League. Silly mistakes, fumbles and penalties will hurt much more when they run into more disciplined teams come league.
10. TEMPLE CITY (1-2) -- (Previously No. 6) I'm not one to question any coach's decisions on the field. I'm more curious than anything as to why Joey Stewart was not carrying the ball as many times as he did in the first half. Things seemed to be working when he had 18 carries in the first half and from what I've read and heard he had only four carries in the second half. And then you ask Stewart to give you a first down on fourth and 2 at midfield? Not sure about that. The Rams no doubt are a battle-tested team. I'll go on the record here and say that if Temple City loses on Friday that won't be enough to drop them from the polls. But to suddenly be 1-3 after such an impressive start will be a bit of a mystery.

As long as there are injuries, coaching moves, bye weeks, and waiver wire prospects there is always a chance to win regardless of who goes down. Players like J.T. Latinos have ascended to the largest minority population in the United States, comprising almost 16% of the total population in the country. With this unprecedented number, we have yet to fully discern the full range and impact of the challenges our communities face. It is clear, however, that health care is an often devastating challenge confronting millions of Hispanics.
National Minority Health Month is this month, and for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), it renews the need for us to stress the gross health care inequalities faced by Latino and other minority populations. Hispanics compose a significant portion of the nations workforce; failure to remedy our current health care system ensures a precarious, uncertain future for our country.
Combined with other issues such as poverty and lack of access to educational opportunities, too many children are stuck in a very hard place. Their parents or parent might be working several part-time jobs, or have other factors that are a roadblock to their financial security.
Currently, about 1 out of 3 Hispanics are uninsured - a disheartening statistic reflecting an inability to address medical emergencies that leaves families vulnerable. They must rely on public health care services, like Medicare and Medicaid, to provide for their needs. Approximately 40% of Hispanic children are beneficiaries of such public services.
However, the vacuous rhetoric employed by Republicans and the current administration against the expansion of programs like SCHIP demonstrates the difficulties that lie ahead. In their continual diatribe against immigrants, Republicans have fervently lobbied against any effort focused on extending assistance to these needy families. In turn, they have relegated the issue of health to mere politics, and legal immigrant children paid the price for that last year in SCHIP negotiations.
We believe that this strident, stubborn opposition to helping deserving families in need accomplishes nothing but exacerbating the disparities within the health care system.
The CHC recognizes the relevance of this issue to Hispanics, and has been active in spearheading legislation to recalibrate the health care system. With the help of the TriCaucus (the coalition of the CHC, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus), Rep. Hilda Solis (CA-32), Chair of the CHC Health and the Environment Task Force, has introduced the Health Equity and Accountability Act, H.R. 3014.
The League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States, has praised this piece of legislation, as it underscores the major problems concerning the current national health disparities crises and lack of healthcare services in under-served communities.
Latino children are less likely to receive adequate medical care, such as routine examinations and vaccinations. Latinos and African-Americans comprise 60% of all HIV/AIDS cases in the country. It is evident that priority must be given to diminishing these health disparities. If we have any chance of fixing health care for our community as a whole, action must be taken now.
In the spirit of National Minority Health month, we at the CHC will continue to strive and fight for equitable, quality health care. It is a commitment we have held for many years, and a commitment that will continue.
We currently live in a society where people of color face dangerous and unjust inequalitiesin health care and beyond. It is a remarkably devastating reality that should not be tolerated.

Pancake passed into the great Mouse Hunt in the Ether on the morning of September 30 from cardiac arrest associated with a routine blood draw to help treat her bladder infection, diabetes, anemia, and kidney failure, all of which manifested for the first time on Saturday.

Pancake, who was called Frankie when I rescued her, was roughly 13 years old when she passed and was the most amusing cat because she was as much sugar as she was BILE. While it has been over a year since she moved out of my home and into Amandaapos;s, I am still devastated at the loss of such a wonderful companion animal.

I donapos;t think I have enough tears to even begin to express my sorrow or loss.

I can only hope that the next life is as kind to her as Amanda was to her in this one.

I also have a green leather vest with the name of a hard-core biker gang name stitched in the back: just like a real hard-core biker, I belong to a gang of other hard-core bikers - Paotie’s Gang of Uno. And! Plus! For protection, I wear a green, Trojan-styled helmet that strikes fear into the hearts of naughty and nice Christians!
I digress!
So .. I first became a hard-core biker after stopping by a tattoo parlor, which is where most of the hard-core bikers I met were also hanging out, and began the process of becoming a hard-core biker. I was later beaten into a bloody pulp, bought my blue two-wheeler, and went hard-core!
Everywhere I go now, I am a hard-core biker. Chicks honk their horns at me - and I am deaf! Old men give me the old-tip-of-the-hat-nod-and-wave whenever I pass by. Po-lice officers burn holes through my soul as I happily ride past speed traps.
I am a lone wolf in a crowded world! I am a hard-core biker!
