Atelevision ad supporting Proposition 8 implies that gay marriage would have to be in California public schools unless the right of same-sex couples to marry is overturned. It makes me wonder: What exactly do you teach when you teach gay marriage? How to get same-sex weddings announced in the New York Times?

And, wait a second: If gay marriage would have to be taught, is heterosexual marriage already in the curriculum? Do teachers say Today, boys and girls, we're going to learn about passive aggressive behavior related to laundry? Are there workbook exercises called Ten things I'm accusing you of that really have to do with my own insecurities? And don't those lessons already cross over to gay marriage?

As it turns out, the only thing in the education code related to marriage has to do with teaching the legal and financial aspects and responsibilities of marriage and parenthood. Moreover, it's only a requirement for school districts seeking state funds for health education, which not every school does.

In other words, no matter what happens with Proposition 8, Secrets for Meeting and Marrying the Same-Sex Partner of Your Dreams won't make the syllabus, at least not because of the education code the ad references. Granted, if gay marriage remains legal, a thoughtful teacher (especially of older kids) might see fit to acknowledge that fact. Call me a latte-drinking, Volvo-driving, personal-responsibility-touting lunatic, but that sounds pretty reasonable, because in so doing, he or she would be conveying the fact that no one, regardless of sexual orientation, is off the hook when it comes to marriage's legal and financial aspects.

As for the Proposition 8 supporters who apparently fear that such discussions would be tantamount to promoting gay marriage -- how can I say this without hurting your feelings? Perhaps your invitation to the popular culture's collective and ongoing celebration of same-sex matrimony has been lost in the mail, because I don't see how you could think that kids haven't already been

(Pitt also donated $100,000 to fighting Proposition 8.) There was that run on San Francisco City Hall the first time it was legal -- with pictures of happy couples all over every kind of news media. And then the second coming of all that, when the state Supreme Court weighed in.

Still, just because gay marriage is nothing new for the general public doesn't mean kids necessarily understand the complete concept. But that doesn't have as much to do with homosexuality as it does with the fact that some young people can't tell the difference between getting married and going on a really long date. So maybe marriage class should be mandatory -- with an emphasis not on gay or straight but, rather, (As in, until you're older.)

As inundated as young people are with superficial, misleading and often incredibly tacky messages about sex, they're barraged with equally superficial, misleading and often incredibly tacky messages about marriage. Don't believe me? Watch the Wedding Channel for just five minutes.

Of course, in many ways it was always thus -- or at least it has been since Queen Victoria transformed the white wedding gown from a garment into a genre -- the lavish white wedding -- unto itself. One cable wedding show, MTV's Engaged and Underage, follows very young couples in the weeks before their weddings, and takes such a starry-eyed view of taffeta dresses and towering cakes that no amount of sobering footage can counteract the ultimate effect: glorifying what may well be the biggest mistake these kids will ever make.

Oh, and by the way, Engaged and Underage has featured a 19-year-old lesbian couple who met on MySpace and got engaged six weeks later. That's ground- breaking stuff, mostly because it proves that marriage-related stupidity isn't just for straight people anymore.

And that's why students need marriage-ed. They need it because we're being taught to associate marriage not with permanent commitment but with social status, diamond rings, gifts, throwing a big party and, for women, wearing a dress that doesn't necessarily fit through the door. As a result, many teens of all sexual orientations (and many adults too) not only confuse sex with love, they confuse the long-term implications of marriage with the short-term gratification of wedding and honeymoon planning.

No matter what happens with Proposition 8, the way the education code is worded, it's unlikely that a lot of classroom time will ever get devoted to thinking deeply about marriage of any brand. That's a shame, because what students desperately need to be steered toward is not straight marriage or gay marriage but grown-up marriage. Now that would be radical.

Bread Machine Dough Method:
 
Put the milk and butter in a microwave safe container and heat until the butter is mostly melted into the milk. Pour into your bread machine’s pan and add all the remaining ingredients for the dough in the pan in the manufacturer’s recommended order. Progam for the dough cycle and press ‘start’. Manual Dough Method:
 
Put the milk and butter in a microwave save container and heat until butter is mostly melted into the milk. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, butter, pumpkin, sugar, and salt until evenly combined. Add 2 cups of the flour along with the yeast to the bowl and stir with a large wooden spoon until smooth. Add the remaining 2 cups of flour and stir until a soft dough comes together. You may need to add a little extra flour to make the dough workable, but only add it 1 Tablespoon at a time so that it doesn’t get too dry. This is supposed to be a very soft dough! Lightly flour your countertop and knead the dough for a couple turns until you have a smooth dough. Lightly grease another large bowl and turn dough into it. Rub the surface of the dough lightly with a neutral oil, such as canola, cover and let rise in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
 
Assembly:
 
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg for the filling. Set aside to prepare the dough.
 
On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out into a 24 x 10 rectangle. Brush generously with melted butter to within ½ of the edges. Sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar mixture. Roll up from a long side in jelly-roll style. You can use a bench knife to help you along if your dough is sticking a little. Pinch the seams shut to seal. Using a sharp knife- preferably serrated- cut the roll into 24- 1 slices. Grease 2- 9 square baking pans. Place 12 rolls in each pan with cut sides facing up and down. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and allow to rise overnight in the fridge.
 
About an hour before you want to serve the rolls, remove plastic wrap from the rolls and set in an oven with the light on. Place a pan of boiling water on the rack below the rolls, close the oven and allow to warm for about 30 minutes. When you can no longer feel a chill coming from the dough when your hand is lightly placed on top, remove pans from the oven and preheat to 350F.
 
Bake rolls for about 30 minutes or until they’re golden brown. Remove from oven to a rack and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
 
While rolls are cooling, whisk together the cream cheese and milk. Add the powdered sugar and whisk vigorously until smooth.
 
Turn rolls out on a plate if desired or leave in the pan and drizzle with the cream cheese icing.  EAT!  EAT, I say before the children get them all.

The dreaded over the top golf swing, and how to fix it without one more golf lesson.
When we all start this crazy game of golf, it seems we have the wrong idea of how to hit the ball. And the key word is HIT. You seethe golf is a SWING not a hit, so if we have it in our mind we are going to HIT the ball, our mind will tell us to get to the ball as quick as we can, and that is usually the over the top golf swing.
When our eyes are fixed on the ball, we instinctively want to get at it, to HIT IT, to smack it with our hands first. Unfortunately that doesnt work too well does it? In fact, this is counter-productive to a solid shot in golf.
The best analogy for the golf swing is throwing a rock side arm. Remember when we were kids and we found the flattest rocks and could throw them all day long skipping them across the water? Look at what your body is doing when you throw the rock.
The most critical part is your lower body is leading the way. Then your hips, your core, shoulders and lastly your hand throwing the rock. This is exactly how the golf swing should feel. Like a side arm baseball throw.
The next time you go to the range, before you hit one ball, pick up a golf ball and throw it out in the range side arm. Remember that feeling, and then start hitting balls with the shorter clubs first, so you can repeat this motion. Get it built into your body, so you really know what it should feel like.
If you still cant do it with your golf club, I can almost bet you have a flexibility (and strength) issue in your core rotational movement. Because the golf swing seems to many as a very unnatural movement, your body actually gets in the way of you swinging the club.
Does that make sense?
I know Ive fought a lateral slide in my golf swing and I personally need to focus on rotating very early in my golf swing. Thats just me though.
But if you cannot lead your downswing with the lower body first, while staying back with your upper body, you have a physical limitation in your core area that needs to be addressed right away. If you dont take care of the physical limitation, you will most likely struggle with this swing fault for a very long time.
Doing stretches where your lower body is held still while your rotate your upper body to one side then the other is an easy way to improve your core rotational flexibility. This is a must if you want to fix your over the top golf swing.
Improving your core strength will also allow you to aggressively rotate your lower body first from the top of the downswing while keeping your upper body back for a split second. This allows you to get the lower body out of the way so you can drop your club into the proper slot, coming from the inside. Get this right, and you will NEVER swing over the top again.

And fundamentally, what is the Obama vision for the future of America?
Nobody knows; its a mystery.
John McCain and Sarah Palin (his backup) are required to make irrevocable decisions with far-reaching consequences. Those consequences will not only affect all Americans right now, but will affect the United States into the future across many generations. Its the irrevocablity of these crucial decisions that matters! There wont be any if a bad decision about terrorists leads to a nuclear explosion over New York City.

To review: In March 2005, Johnson-Klein was fired for allegedly violating school policies, setting in motion events that culminated with her successful lawsuit and a $9 million settlement.
Henry, a 6-foot 2-inch center from Shreveport, La., was a Bulldogs freshman in 2004-05.
The trial revolved around this contrast: Johnson-Klein's assertion of her unyielding commitment to women and equality despite the sexist opposition of Fresno State administrators vs. the university's assertion that Johnson-Klein abused her authority to such a degree that the young women in her charge were in peril.
Title IX is the federal law requiring equitable treatment of male and female athletes. In the lingo of administrators, it's all about ensuring an equitable student-athlete experience. Johnson-Klein said her behavior personified this ideal; Fresno State said Johnson-Klein's behavior corrupted this ideal.
A jury of 11 women and one man sided unanimously with Johnson-Klein.
Henry sided with Fresno State.
One piece of Henry's testimony stands out.
Johnson-Klein had a young child when the 2004-05 season began. According to trial testimony, her contract included a university-paid nanny that could accompany the team on road trips. Johnson-Klein's husband also often traveled with the team, according to testimony.
On one particular road trip, Henry testified, she was on the team bus with her teammates, waiting for Johnson-Klein to board. The coach was late. Finally, Henry said, she was summoned to Johnson-Klein's hotel room.
Her task, Henry said: Help pick up the room and pack the clothes.
According to subsequent testimony, the child had wreaked the havoc and Johnson-Klein, facing a ticking clock, sought the kindness of another to resolve a dilemma that could befall any working mother in city far from home.
A weeping Henry didn't see it that way. She said she felt used by a coach who had total control over playing time and athletic scholarships.
By February 2005, Henry said, her student-athlete experience under Johnson-Klein had deteriorated. Had Fresno State retained Johnson-Klein, Henry said, she would've left Fresno "on the next thing smoking."
Johnson-Klein's lawyers said the trial was about their client's constitutional right to equal protection of the laws.
But the long trial never explained one thing.

Since our last submission, the United States has enacted or begun to undertake new laws, policies, and practices that reflect the continuing failure of the U.S. to fully accept its obligations under the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. We outline here some of those developments, and hope the Committee will consider these matters as well. We also wish to apprise the Committee of relevant new research that Human Rights Watch has completed since our last submission.

I. Detainee Treatment Act (Articles 1, 2, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 16)

In December 2005, President George W. Bush signed into law the Detainee Treatment Act (DTA). On the positive side, the DTA includes the McCain amendment, which prohibits the use of torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment by any U.S. official or employee operating anywhere in the world. It also sets the Army Field Manual on Intelligence Interrogation as the standard for all interrogations carried out by the Department of Defense.

Unfortunately, the DTA raises important new concerns. The DTA includes a provision, known as the Graham-Levin amendment, that precludes detainees at Guantanámo Bay from bringing any future challenge to their ongoing detention or conditions of confinement before the courts.

In ongoing litigation, the administration has taken the position that the Graham-Levin amendment precludes detainees at Guantanamo Bay from challenging in federal court the use of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the courts of appeal agree with this position and uphold the amendments constitutionality, the gains from the McCain amendment will be significantly vitiated, with victims of abuse held at Guantanámo having no independent legal forum in which to seek to vindicate their rights. Denying these individuals the opportunity to redress such abuse violates the U.S.s obligations under Article 13, 14, 16 of the Convention.

The United States also continues to circumvent its obligations under the Convention and undermine the McCain amendment by defining torture in a manner that is inconsistent with the Conventions definition of torture. Of particular concern, the United States has failed to denounce a type of mock drowning, as a form of torture or cruel and inhuman treatment. In an interview with ABC news on November 29, 2005, CIA Director Porter Goss refused to state that waterboarding was an impermissible interrogation technique.

Human Rights Watch is also concerned that planned revisions to the Army Field Manual on Intelligence Interrogation, which will reportedly include a classified annex, will also undercut the gains of the McCain amendment. Given that military personnel have been authorized to use abusive interrogation techniques against terrorist suspects in the past, and given the administrations continued refusal to denounce waterboarding as torture, Human Rights Watch is worried that the contents of this annex will allow for practices that violate the prohibition against torture and other abuse. Human Rights Watch hopes that the Committee will inquire of the United States as to the need for and scope of interrogation techniques that will be included in the classified annex.

Moreover, the United States has also never stated what steps if any it has taken to ensure compliance with the provisions of the McCain amendment by the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The McCain amendment does not provide a mechanism for individual victims of torture and abuse to bring civil court cases to seek redress for violations of the amendment. As a result, the administrations role in internally monitoring and enforcing the amendment takes on heightened importance. Has the CIA issued and promulgated new interrogation guidelines in response to the passage of the McCain amendment? How are the new rules communicated to agents and contractors in the field? What steps is the United States taking to monitor and enforce these obligations?

Our concerns in this respect are magnified by the Presidents signing statement issued at the time the McCain amendment became law, in which the President suggested that his powers as Commander-in-Chief trumped any restrictions on the use of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment imposed by the amendment.

II. Use of Evidence Obtained Through Torture (Article 15)

The Detainee Treatment Act includes a troubling provision that appears to sanction the use of evidence obtained through torture. Specifically, the DTA requires the Combatant Status Review Tribunals and Annual Review Boards (military bodies convened to evaluate the status of detainees at Guantanámo Bay) to assess whether statements from the detainee were obtained through coercion and then assess the probative value of the statement. The implication of this rule is that statements obtained through torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment could be used as evidence if they have sufficient probative value. Moreover, there is no prohibition on the use of statements of other witnesses against the detainees that are obtained through torture or other coercion. According to Pentagon documents, Mohammed Al-Qahtani accused 30 fellow prisoners of being Osama bin Laden's bodyguards -- after Qahtani was reportedly tormented by weeks of sleep deprivation, isolation and sexual humiliation.

Somewhat more positively, the Pentagon released a Military Commission Instruction in April that bars the use of evidence obtained through torture in any of the military commission proceedings at Guantanamo Bay. However, the Instruction falls far short of what is required under the Convention. It does not bar the use of evidence acquired by abusive interrogations that fall short of torture but nonetheless violate the prohibitions against cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. It is also unclear how evidence acquired through torture would be excluded in practice. The Instruction does not oblige the prosecution to ascertain and disclose that evidence was obtained through torture. Nor does it establish who has the burden of proof in a case where the defendant raises a challenge to evidence on the grounds that it was obtained through torture. If the burden is placed on the defendant, without a concomitant obligation on the prosecution to disclose, this will be a meaningless prohibition. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for a defendant to corroborate a claim of torture or abuse, without the assistance of an independent investigation by the prosecution who, unlike the defense, has access to the interrogators and interrogation logs.

Another area of concern is the recent case that appears to turn a blind eye to the use of evidence based on torture. In November, Ahmed Omar Ali was convicted on terrorism conspiracy charges and subsequently sentenced to thirty years in prison. At trial, the government relied extensively on a confession made by Ali while he was detained in Saudi Arabia. Ali maintains that he was tortured, beaten, whipped, and ultimately coerced into confessing. The court, however, denied the defense teams request to present evidence of scars on his back suggesting that he had been tortured. It also precluded the defense from presenting general evidence regarding Saudi Arabias poor human rights record on torture, instead taking at face value Saudi officials statements denying the existence of torture in Saudi Arabia. In so doing, they ignored U.S. Department of State reports of widespread abuse of prisoners by the Saudi Arabian government.

III. (Articles 2, 5, 1, 13, 14, 16)

In April, John Negroponte, Director of National Intelligence, acknowledged to media sources that the Central Intelligence Agency continues to hold approximately three dozen al-Qaeda suspects in secret overseas prisons. He maintained that the United States is likely to keep them in captivity for as long as the war on terror continues. These detainees are effectively denied access to the International Committee of the Red Cross, and subjected to treatment and interrogation that is not monitored by any court or independent entity. The only plausible reason for these detainees is that the United States wants to keep their treatment and conditions of confinement secret presumably because it includes torture and abuse.

Notably, the State Department, in its recent Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices (released on March 8, 2006 and covering events in 2005), condemned Belarus, Burma, China, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Nepal, North Korea, Philippines, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan, and Zimbabwe for holding individuals in incommunicado detention and for engaging in

Human Rights Watch hopes that the Committee will vigorously question the United States about its detainees and the use of practices that it rightly condemns when engaged in by other nations.

IV. Diplomatic Assurance and Rendition to Torture (Article 3)

The United States continues to promote its policy of relying on diplomatic assurances as a safeguard against a return to torture. In December, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stated: The United States has not transported anyone, and will not transport anyone, to a country when we believe he will be tortured. Where appropriate, the United States seeks assurances that transferred persons will not be tortured. But the United States does not have any meaningful mechanism to monitor these assurances even when the individual is being sent to a country with a known record of engaging in torture. Moreover, there do not appear to be any opportunities for individuals to formally challenge their rendition or transfer on the grounds that the diplomatic assurances are not likely to provide sufficient protection from torture. Despite numerous examples in which diplomatic assurances were secured and individuals were subjected to torture anyway, the United States continues to rely on these unenforceable assurances.

(a) Past Cases

The Committee is already well aware of the highly publicized case of Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen who was detained by the United States. in September 2002. U.S. immigration authorities held him for two weeks, during which time he was unable to challenge either his detention or imminent transfer to a country likely to torture him. Relying on diplomatic assurances from Syria, the United States then flew Arar to Jordan, where he was driven across the border to Syria and detained there for ten months. The United States relied on the Syrian assurances despite repeated statements from Arar to immigration authorities that he would be subject to torture if sent to Syria. Arar reports that he was beaten by security officers in Jordan and tortured repeatedly, often with cables and electrical cords, during his confinement in a Syrian prison.

But the Arar case is not the only instance in which someone in United States custody has been rendered to torture.

Another example is that of Mamdouh Habib, who was arrested in Pakistan in 2001 and transferred by U.S. officials to a prison in Egypt where he says he was tortured with electric shocks until he fainted, kicked, punched, beaten, and rammed with what he describes as an electric cattle prod. Dr. Hajib al-Naumi, Qatars former justice minister provides corroboration for Habibs account. Dr. al-Naumi states that contacts of his in Egypt told him that Habib was in fact tortured. He was interrogated in a way which a human cannot stand up We were told that he -- they rang the bell that he will die and somebody had to help him.

An additional case is that of Mohammad Saad Iqbal Madmi, who was arrested in Jakarta allegedly at the request of the CIA and flown to Cairo, where he says he was held for 92 days and severely tortured with electrodes. Madmi was subsequently sent from Egypt to Afghanistan and then to the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. Other detainees in Guantanamo Bay have given similar accounts to the media and to their attorneys of being transferred to a third party country and tortured before being sent to Guantanamo.

Presumably the United States followed its stated policy of reliance on diplomatic assurances before it sent either Habib or Madmi to Egypt. Alternatively, it rendered these individuals to Egypt without such assurances despite the State Departments own finding that [t]orture and abuse of prisoners and detainees by [Egyptian] police, security personnel, and prison guards remained common and persistent.

Human Rights Watch hopes that the Committee will ask the United States whether it obtained diplomatic assurances in these cases. If not, why not, given the evidence of persistent torture and abuse of detainees. And if so, what did they do to follow up to ensure that these detainees were not subject to torture?

(b) Future cases

Human Rights Watch is extremely concerned about the potential for large-scale reliance on diplomatic assurances in future transfers of individuals out of Guantanamo Bay. There is growing international pressure on the United States to close Guantanamo Bay. The United States has begun making public statements that it has slated 14 detainees eligible for release and 120 for transfer to their home country.

There is no administrative or legal mechanism, however, for a detainee at Guantanamo Bay to challenge his transfer to a country on the grounds that he would be in danger of torture and that diplomatic assurances are not likely to provide sufficient protection from torture. Prior to the passage of the DTA, some detainees were able to raise such claims in federal court as part of their habeas challenges. In several cases, the federal court required the government to give 30-days notice prior to any such transfer. Now, the administration has taken the view that the DTA cuts off even this limited avenue of review for the detainees.

V. Lack of Accountability (Articles 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 16)

Human Rights Watch, Human Rights First, and the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at NYU School of Law have jointly undertaken a Detainee Abuse and Accountability Project (DAA Project) to collect and analyze information about allegations of detainee abuse in U.S. custody in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Guantanamo Bay detention facility; and to assess what actions if any were taken in response, from investigations to, where appropriate, disciplinary actions and punishments. These findings have just been released in a report published on April 26, 2006. Among the findings are the following:

There are over 330 cases in which U.S. military and civilian personnel are credibly alleged to have abused or killed detainees. These cases involve at least 600 U.S. personnel and over 460 detainees. Allegations have come from U.S. facilities throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay.

Only fifty-four military personnelfewer than ten percent of the more than 600 U.S. personnel implicated in detainee abuse casesare known to have been convicted by court-martial. Forty of these individuals have been sentenced to prison time, but only a small number have resulted in significant prison time. Many sentences have been for less than a year, even in cases involving serious abuse. Of the hundreds of personnel implicated in detainee abuse, only ten people have been sentenced to a year or more in prison.

Of the hundreds of allegations of abuse collected by the DAA Project, only about half appear to have been properly investigated. In numerous cases, military investigators appear to have closed investigations prematurely or to have delayed their resolution. In many cases, the military has simply failed to open investigations, even in cases where credible allegations have been made.

DAA Project researchers found over 400 personnel have been implicated in cases investigated by military or civilian authorities, but only about a third of them have faced any kind of disciplinary or criminal action. And even in cases where U.S. military investigations have substantiated abuse, military commanders have often chosen to proceed with weaker non-judicial forms of disciplinary action instead of criminal prosecution.

No U.S. military officer has been held accountable for criminal acts committed by subordinates under the doctrine of command responsibility. That doctrine provides that a superior is responsible for the criminal acts of subordinates if the superior knew or should have known that the crimes were being committed and failed to take steps to prevent them or to punish the perpetrators. Only three officers have been convicted by court-martial for detainee abuse; in all three instances, they were convicted for abuses in which they directly participated, not for their responsibility as commanders.

The CIA has investigated several cases of abuse involving its personnel, and reportedly referred some individuals to the Department of Justice for prosecution. But few cases have been robustly investigated.

Out of twenty civilians, including CIA agents, referred for criminal prosecution for detainee abuse by the military and the CIA since 2002, the Department of Justice has prosecuted just one civilian contractor. Two of the cases have been closed for insufficient evidence, and the other seventeen remain under investigation. The Department of Justice has not indicted a single CIA agent for abusing detainees.

One case that particularly highlights the failure of accountability is that of Mohammad al-Qahtani. Human Rights Watch has obtained an unredacted copy of al-Qahtanis interrogation log, detailing interrogations from a six-week period from November 2002 to January 2003. The interrogation log reveals that al-Qahtani was subjected to a regime of physical and mental mistreatment from mid-November 2002 to early January 2003. For six weeks, he was intentionally deprived of sleep, forced into painful physical positions (known as stress positions) and subjected to forced exercises, forced standing, and sexual and other physical humiliation, including the administration of a forced enema. In 2005, the Judge Advocates General of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps told the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services that the techniques used on al-Qahtani violated the U.S. Army Field Manual on Intelligence Interrogation, and would have been illegal if perpetrated by another country on captured U.S. personnel.

In December 20, 2005, the Army Inspector General, completed a report, obtained by salon.com in April 2006, that investigated the allegations of abuse in the al-Qahtani case. The report contains a sworn statement by Lt. Gen. Randall M. Schmidt that implicates Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in the abuse of detainee Mohammad al-Qahtani. Gen. Schmidt, who conducted an investigation into the case in early 2005 that included two interviews with Rumsfeld, describes the defense secretary as being personally involved in al-Qahtanis interrogation. Gen. Schmidt describes Rumsfeld as talking weekly with General Geoffrey Miller, then a senior commander at Guantanamo, about the interrogation of al-Qahtani.

The report findings and recommendations were rejected by the head of U.S. Southern Command, Gen. Bantz J. Craddock, who said in July 2005 that the al-Qahtani interrogation did not violate military law or policy. As a result, neither Secretary Rumsfeld, General Miller, nor any of the interrogators who took part in the interrogations have been criminally investigated or made to account in any way for their actions.

VI. Lethal Injection (Articles 13, 14, and 16)

Thirty-seven of the thirty-eight death penalty states and the federal government have adopted lethal injection as the procedure by which the death penalty is administered; for nineteen states it is the only legal method of execution. Human Rights Watch has just completed a report examining these practices, which finds that the states have failed to develop methods of lethal injection that will, in accordance with international law, reduce to the greatest extent possible the risk of pain and suffering during the execution. Indeed, there is growing evidence suggesting that in a number of cases the method used may have caused an agonizing death.

In the standard method of lethal injection used in the United States, the prisoner lies strapped to a gurney, a catheter is inserted into his vein with an intravenous line attached. A series of three drugs is injected into his vein by executioners hidden behind a wall. A massive dose of sodium thiopental, an anesthetic, is injected first, followed by pancuronium bromide, which paralyzes voluntary muscles, but leaves the prisoner fully conscious and able to experience pain. A third drug, potassium chloride, quickly causes cardiac arrest, but the drug is so painful that veterinarian guidelines in the United States prohibit its use unless a veterinarian first ensures that the pet to be put down is deeply unconscious. No such precaution is taken for prisoners being executed.

Although supporters of lethal injection believe the prisoner dies painlessly, there is mounting evidence that prisoners may have experienced excruciating pain during their executions. Logs from recent executions in California, and toxicology reports from recent executions in North Carolina, suggest prisoners may in fact have been inadequately anesthetized before being put to death. This should not be surprising given that corrections agencies have not taken the steps necessary to ensure a painless execution. The sequence of drugs and a method of administration used were created three decades ago, and were then adopted unquestioningly by state officials with no medical or scientific background. Little has changed since then. As a result, prisoners in the United States are executed by means that the American Veterinary Medical Association regards as too cruel to use on dogs and cats.

Human Rights Watch has found that none of the states that employ lethal injection consulted medical experts to ascertain whether the original three-drug sequence could be adapted to lessen the risk of pain to the prisoner by using other drugs or methods of administering them. Human Rights Watch opposes capital punishment in all forms as inherently cruel. But until the 38 death penalty states and the federal government abolish capital punishment, they have an obligation to develop methods of execution that will reduce, to the greatest extent possible, the condemned prisoners risk of mental or physical pain and suffering. Human Rights Watch hopes that the Committee will question the U.S. about its failure to ensure that the method of lethal injection does not cause needless agony.

I met my son and daughter in law in Niagara Falls for the weekend - lots of fun! So i went in, and the casino was huge, as big as a convention center. There was background music like I was entering heaven. Mostly there were slot machines, and the customers were for the most part older seniors, some with canes, over weight, and smoking - the same crowd you see at a racetrack. So I sat down by the slots that had a grand prize of a Lexus SUV, on display above us. I put in $10, played three times, and I won: whistles went off, sirens, bells, lights, I mean my machine made more noise than anyone else's. I thought I must have won the Lexus, but then again, no one was rushing up to congratulate me. The machine wanted to know if I wanted to play some more, and I selected a receipt. I put the receipt in a cashout machine, and it turned out I won $19. That is, I bet $10, and got $19 back, so I really only won $9 (they count what you bet as part of your winnings). So I left $9 richer. I gave the housekeeper who made my room at the holiday inn a $5 tip, so I only had $4 left. Thats my only experience gambling. A winner.

I cant claim to be either a professional eBay user, or even a semi-professional eBay user, but I have used it quite a lot, both as a buyer, and to a lesser extent as a seller, but maybe, just maybe theres some advice in here that novices might find useful.
Ill also touch upon Paypal, which, although it is another organisation, being a payment processor not an auction site, just so happens to be part of the same parent company as eBay, and so the two are inexorably linked, seemingly.
WHAT IS eBAY?
Well, its nowt but a damned-great car-boot sale on the internet with all that this implies. You can buy things there or sell things. Some sellers are traders, others are private. Id imagine that a larger proportion of buyers are private, unless a crafty trader sees a bargain they can sell for more later!
It carries with it, just like a car boot sale, one huge caveat -
KNOW YOUR PRICES..AND KEEP YOUR HANDS IN YOUR POCKETS
err, thats TWO HUGE caveats, sorry, I didnt expect the Spanish Inquisition.
Its very easy to assume that an open air market is cheaper than conventional retail, and the same applies here. Time and time again, people buy at markets, only to find theyve paid the bog-standard High Street price.
So many times Ive checked the Amazon price for something on eBay to find that its only a little higher than buying a possibly second-hand version of it, say a camera, on eBay.
I put this down to the fact that amateurs selling used electronics sometimes have an inflated view of the items current worth; lets say half of what they paid for it.
To be fair, this rule-of-thumb works fine for most inanimate objects with the notable exception of modern technology.
For example, the Casio 3.4 mega-pixel camera I paid £700 for, 5 years ago, is now virtually worthless, having been surpassed by even the most entry level digital cameras, some with 5 mega-pixels and price tags of £70. You need to be realistic about these things, and agree never to be an again if you dont want to get caught like this.
Then again, if an electronic item works and you have no use for it, dont wait for it to go faulty, sell it; just dont expect to get a lot for it!
In the same way as its possible to get carried away on the spur of the moment (heh, its a market, it has to be cheaper, hasnt it?), dont get caught up in the thrill of the chase and bid more than you intended just to get one up on the second highest bidder, who may, very sensibly have stuck at a level theyve researched as being worth paying.
Quite often, you, as the second highest bidder will be offered the goods at your price just because youve met some invisible ceiling price that the seller had in mind, and theyve got more than one of whatever it was you were bidding for. Anyway, it saves them the expense of re-advertising - Ill come to fees later.
This happened to me a while back. I was prepared to pay £150 and no more for a Canon Ixus 750 from the official Canon Refurbished site where shop-returns are repacked as new and guaranteed by Canon for a full year. I was outbid at the last moment by someone prepared to pay £165 but I still got the camera, warranty and all for my price because they had nine of them for sale. In this case, I was also aware that I was buying a superseded model (now the Ixus 900 Titanium), but someone buying on a whim could feel cheated when they find its not the latest item.
Dont just know your prices; know your product variants too!

STAR-NEWS FOOTBALL RANKINGS EXPLAINED
1. ST. FRANCIS (3-0) -- (Previously No. 1) The Golden Knights are holding strong to the No. 1 spot. They played impressive against Burroughs last week. Aside from having a great coaching staff led by Jim Bonds and a superb running back in Dietrich Riley, St. Francis has a great supporting cast in quarterback Justin Sciarra who completed 11 of 15 passes for 103 yards and one touchdown. Evan King is another solid back. He doesn't have the speed like Riley but he is a heckuva strong player, like when he ran over two or three defenders at the goal to score. Chris Sember played well at receiver and Malik Speed gives the Golden Knights another speedster. Don't be surprised of St. Francis blows up Rio Mesa.
2. MUIR (2-1) -- (Previously No. 2) The Mustangs probably played their toughest games in the nonleague season. Beating the likes of Diamond Ranch and Venice helps Muir make a strong case for the No. 1 spot. But lets be honest, I think they're at least half a step behind St. Francis. Muir will probably go unbeaten the rest of the season. They had a week off so expect Muir to light it up against Glendale. It'll be close to start but the Mustangs pull away big time in the second half.
3. ROSEMEAD (2-1) -- (Previously No. 3) Lets be honest, in this area there is St. Francis, Muir and then everybody else. Besides those two teams, I think the Panthers can compete with just about everybody else in the area including a healthy Arcadia team. Rosemead is very physical up front, arguably the most physical team aside from the two teams above. Tra Sumlar did not play last week but to see Rosemead get blown out was a bit of a surprise. The Panthers are the kind of team year in and year out where you can always count on them to have a 7-3, 8-2 season. Rosemead will prove to be too much for Temple City on Friday.
4. SAN MARINO (3-0) -- (Previously No. 5) So the Titans beat what is supposed to be a good La Salle team but aside from that San Marino has not been tested. Hoover was a nice confident-booster so expect the Titans to finally get challenged when they host Cantwell. Still, it should not go unnoticed the fact that this Titans team is a much different team we almost sadly were beginning to get used to. San Marino can put up some points and if they can do the same against Cantwell, which I think they can even though Robledo doesn't think so, then we'll find out how good these guys really are. It won't get any easier for San Marino the following week when they take on San Gabriel, the supposed football program sponsored by yours truly and the Star-News. Ha, hilarious.
5. SAN GA
IEL (2-2) -- (Previously No. 8) The Matadors move up three spots from last week. The Matadors rolled through South Pasadena but had a hard time against Cathedral and Serra. The true measuring stick was going to be Temple City which had just come off a tough loss to Alhambra. San Gabriel proved its worth when it initiated a 90-yard drive which proved to be the winning drive. I said the TC-SG game was going to be close and that the Matadors would pull away. People called me crazy but that's exactly how it turned out.
6. ARCADIA (1-2) -- (Previously No. 4) The Apaches proved that when healthy they can compete. The team we saw against St. Francis and Lynwood is clearly not the same without Todd Golper. Fortunately for Arcadia they play Hoover so they should record a W and build its confidence with plenty of scoring. If the Apaches struggle WITHOUT Golper, who is not expected to play, then Arcadia is in much more trouble than it thinks. If Golper returns healthy by the Glendale game then don't expect Arcadia to miss the playoffs. It should be noted that Golper has not played since St. Francis and won't play this week. My feeling? I feel sorry on the first running play by Glendale. That RB is gonna get KO'd.
7. MONROVIA (2-2) -- (Previously No. 7) We all knew Marquise Williams was talented. And with a new coach it was only a matter of time until Williams felt comfortable with the new offense and schemes. It's looking like he, Nick Bueno and Kendall Boggs are finally feeling comfortable. And it's looking like Monrovia and SM will be vying for the Rio Hondo League title. It might be premature to say such a thing but at this point my money's on those two programs. A lot of guys don't know about Beckman but having previously worked in Orange County I can tell you Monrovia shutdown a good offensive team in the Patriots. I feel that victory was when the Wildcats finally turned the corner.
8. MARANATHA (3-0) -- (Previously No. 9) Maranatha had a bye but still they moved up largely in part because of TC's loss and yet another come-from-behind victory by Alhambra. I would bet that if the Minutemen played against Alhambra or TC that would be a close game. Maranatha needs to take care of business on Friday against Mojave if it wants to stay at No. 8. Last year, the Minutemen were humbled when they traveled to Mojave and lost. To put it best, Coach Joel Murphy said it was embarrassing.
9. ALHAM
A (2-1) -- (Previously No. 10) These boys need to get their act together. They've been having to come-from-behind in their last two wins. Mitchell Crockom, as good as he is, is proving to be prone to fumbles. Dude needs to hold on to the ball tighter. Alhambra is an OK team right now at best but if they can find a way to add a running game to its attack then they can become a superb team and a force to be reckoned in the Almont League. Silly mistakes, fumbles and penalties will hurt much more when they run into more disciplined teams come league.
10. TEMPLE CITY (1-2) -- (Previously No. 6) I'm not one to question any coach's decisions on the field. I'm more curious than anything as to why Joey Stewart was not carrying the ball as many times as he did in the first half. Things seemed to be working when he had 18 carries in the first half and from what I've read and heard he had only four carries in the second half. And then you ask Stewart to give you a first down on fourth and 2 at midfield? Not sure about that. The Rams no doubt are a battle-tested team. I'll go on the record here and say that if Temple City loses on Friday that won't be enough to drop them from the polls. But to suddenly be 1-3 after such an impressive start will be a bit of a mystery.

Well, next Saturday Austin will be done with the fall season of baseball. Then it is onto basketball for him. We sign him up this weekend. He is very excited since you have to wait until third grade to join. He has been patiently waiting for this. I hope he enjoys it too. I am sure he will and it will keep him in shape over the winter months until baseball rolls around again. Sports sure do rule the life of parents as their kids get older.

Austin is also learning the electric guitar from his Papa. He is going to learn the song Mmmbop and so are his brothers. Nicholas is getting drums for his birthday and Preston wants to learn the keyboard and sing. So they want to practice really hard and try out for their school's talent show. It is very cute to watch them try and sing and learn instruments. Austin is actually catching onto the guitar very quickly. I am sure some of that stems from being from the same bloodline as his musically talented Papa. The boys are always amazed that Papa can just hear a song and then play it for them on the guitar or keyboard. I am glad they are all enjoying it together. I will have to take some pictures of them together next week and post them.

Well, I also can't believe that the first nine weeks of school is almost over and the first set of report cards will be coming home. The boys seem to be doing well and enjoying school a little more each day they go. Preston is not crying anymore so that is a positive.

I was out of town Sunday morning when the US kicked off their all important Olympic match against Holland. Why do I say 'all important'? Going into the match the US was the only team in the group with three points. Nigeria and Holland had one point based on their draw while Japan had none. Furthermore, this is The Netherlands....the best of the best when it comes to youth national teams. As I clicked on the DVR sunday afternoon I was thinking, "if the US can get a point in this game, they have a chance of qualifying for the next round."

If they can get a point, did you hear me? They almost waltzed out of there with all three points! After the first half I thought to myself, "ok, not too bad. Down one goal. They can tie it up." Freddy Adu was looking more dangerous then he did in the opening match. The Dutch weren't dominating and in fact the US held some decent possession. Meanwhile, the field conditions weren't helping anyone.

As I fast forwarded to the second half I was hoping to see some magic, and I did. In case you missed it, Sacha Kljestan scored one of the nicest goals I've seen from a young Yank. If you catch the highlights, watch where the play starts for Kljestan. Somewhere near midfield if my mind serves. He combines well with Stuart Holden and then again with Freddy Adu when all of a sudden he gets a perfect return pass from Adu and is through to the 18 yard box beating two Dutch defenders. Just when you think the orange shirts will strip the ball from him, Sacha makes a great move and puts a beautiful shot past the helpless Dutch keeper, Kenneth Vermeer.

"Wow!" I'm thinking. That was something not often seen from the Red, White Blue...that was more on par with the Dutch themselves. At this point it is the 65th minute and I'm on the edge of my couch despite being tired from a weekend camping trip.

The second half saw an improvement from the young Americans and it seemed the Dutch, one of the pre-tournament favorites based on their two recent European U-21 championships, were losing ground and didn't know what to do with the Americans. Within eight minutes I was off the couch as Jozy Altidore put home a Michael Orozco cross for the go ahead goal. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the US would be beating the Dutch 2-1. As the second half dragged on the US kept putting on pressure, forcing the Dutch keeper into some fine saves. By the end of the match the US had put eight shots on goal compared to Holland's four. The US outclassed The Netherlands!

The win wasn't to be as an ugly foul and free kick let the Dutch back into the match, in the 92nd minute....what a truly heart wrenching moment, seeing the ball skip past Brad Guzan on a free kick that went under the wall. The Dutch got lucky and came back to tie it. Had they lost, they would have been embarased beyond belief and facing almost certain elimination from the Olympics as the Americans moved into the Quarterfinals. However, games end when the whistle goes and aren't won on paper. Take pride American soccer fans. The U-23 team fought hard and well in this game, up against one of the top countries in the footballing world. This also shows what the senior national team will grow to expect once these youngsters mature to the full team...and I can't wait.

All day today...Saturdays are awesome. No other day of the week can compare in the fall. Any other CFB fanatics can agree as well. This season kicked off today, UF cleaned Hawaii out. I was fairly pleased with alot of the game but there is still significant room to improve. Some things I had gripes with:

-Penalties. UF showed its youth in the DL. True they were overly aggressive but the sheer number of penalties committed were frustrating to say the least. It's like it's 2006 all over again where we were among the most penalized team in the nation.

-OL didn't impress me as much. They had a few nice plays in terms of setting up nice runs for our RBs but they were touted to be among the best in the nation. Pass D can improve.

-Backup QBs were LOL. enough said. I don't even want to talk about them.

As I said though, I was pretty pleased. The corners and safeties played well, forcing some pick-6s and fumbles. Tebow played pretty well, I don't expect him to win the heisman as projected. He made up a very high percentage of our offense last year (perhaps due to a lack of RB). This year I hope that we are able to spread the ball around more (and namely run more). Though with the new clock rules I think offenses (alot of power running teams) will be able to control the game even moreso than before. We should be better for Miami with Percy and Spikes back. I was pretty pleased with Lawrence Marsh, our DT as well. Finally getting some pressure up front, a far cry from last year.

Nebraska won as well. Sucked because we didn't get any seats, we came too late because we were piles. Game was fun overall. NE has a pretty solid offense, running game was meh. Defense was meh at times. DL especially sucked. They have alot of work to do.

Some upsets this week. It's to be expected I suppose. VT loses to ECU, Clemson got hammered by Bama, Texas AM loses (LOL) to some shit team. Mizzou held as did many other top 20 teams this week. Some significant headlines were Beanie wells perhaps hurt, which sucks for the tOSU/USC game (want it to be as huge as possible), UGA's starting DE got a torn ACL. Sucks ass for UWashington getting stomped by Oregon too, UW is a team I quite enjoy watching (partly because of Jake Locker as well as my gramps/parents both being UW alumni). Locker's OL got smashed from what I saw so bah.

Anyways, probably going home tomorrow for labor day, no school on monday so I'll get to catch UCLA/Tenn and do some scouting for 3 weeks from now. No poker recently either, the break has been pretty nice.

I also went to the bars tonight with a friend. An interesting event happened as well (posted in SSNL life thread too)-

I don't know what it is about the wee hours of the morning that make me want to write about my life. I don't know what it is about one am that makes me start spewing vile and depressing things into the blog that looks like the bedroom of a sixth-grade girl.

I have gotten scared of dreaming.

I have started waking up panicked, and unable to remember why.

Three nights ago, I took a Valium before I went to bed. Woke up feeling like a different person. Of course, I woke up feeling like a person who'd had at least twelve hours of sleep. But who's counting anymore? We have become a sleepless society. Fuck fossil fuels. What this country really runs on is caffeine, but that's a renewable resource, and of course nobody cares about it. For all I know, those two Rockstar Energy drinks a day for the last two years could have made me sterile, not to mention the massive doses of B12 I take to keep me awake at work.

Not that I'm using my sperm that much these days. Which brings us around to the real reason I'm awake at one in the morning with nothing better to to than blog.

Don't get me wrong. I've slept around in my time. Around the park, around my dorm, around several kitchens and various public places in Arkansas...you get the picture. And it's not like I've been completely deprived of sexual contact over the last two years. I haven't. But I have not had sex, actual sex, in almost two years. I also have not had a meaningful relationship with a sane, rational, non-drug-addicted human being my own age in that time. Or ever, really.

Bad relationship choices are getting me, too. Again, don't get me wrong, I've been with a couple of wonderful guys, including one who, if he hadn't had some other issues we won't go into here, treated me like the Queen of Sheba. But looking back, there is a whole lot more "what the fuck was I thinking," and not nearly enough "God, I'd take him back in a second."

I think I spend too much time living for those little moments of glory when love conquers all: personality defects, substance abuse, psychological and emotional abuse, sexual incompatibility, all of it. Here's an example of what I'm talking about.

I was with this guy we'll call Trent. Cute. Amazingly talented, with a huge Broadway voice. One night, we were mildly stoned, and we go blazing into the parking lot on campus, The Rock Horror Picture Show blaring, and we jump out of the car, strip our shirts off, and start dancing together, singing the Time Warp, having the time of our lives, not caring about anything else in the world nothing but us and the music. One of the most amazing moments I ever had, in one of the worst, most abusive relationships I've ever endured. How I avoided killing him is still something I wonder about to this day.

But I did. And, oddly enough, he was the last person I slept with.

Funny how moments stick in your mind, even more than the person. I can barely remember his face now. I can't remember his voice. Just the feel of his skin against mine on a cool September evening, a gentle kiss, and spinning away as the melody caught us again, hands clasped, nothing in the world but him, and me...and the music.

A cartoon is described in the dictionary as being a simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way. Cartoons have evolved from their origins as preparatory drawings to satirical sketches in newspapers and periodicals in the 1800s, and more recently to an exaggerated representation of human life as shown by modern examples such as The Simpsons.
Although the satirical types of cartoons sketches do still exist, with controversy often surrounding the artist and subject matter, the term cartoon has evolved massively in the last 150 years. A cartoon means something completely different today as TV shows, films, advertisements and comics rely heavily on cartoon characters and the art of illustration in place of realistic drawings or life-like art.
Cartoons, as humorous drawings, originated in 1843 when satirist magazine, Punch, used the term to describe the sketches by artist John Leech. Leechs Cartoon no. 1: Substance and Shadow, shows the first use of the term cartoon in relation to a humorous drawing or satirical sketch. 
The political or humorous cartoon had been used for years previously, but Leech was the first to coin the phrase. As early as 1754, Benjamin Franklin created the drawing of a snake in various pieces with the caption Join, or Die to encourage unity amongst the colonies prior to the French and Indian War. The use of editorial cartoons to promote a specific message originated in the early 1700s.
Cartoons were often used to promote political or social awareness, as they would appeal to people of all levels of education with a simple message. An easy-to-understand message would prove invaluable as a persuasive tool and so posters and editorial cartoons would use cartoons with a strap-line create a brief, concise meaning.
The Franklin cartoon was the clever use of an iconic image with a single line to portray a strong message. This type of cartoon became regularly used in the 1900s when gag cartoons would be published in popular magazines including Punch and the New Yorker. One of the key artists, Peter Arno, is widely credited for inventing the gag cartoon when working for New Yorker magazine.
As well as the single-caption gag cartoon, comic strips became popular around this time. Comic Strips originated in the late 19th century in American newspapers. The difference between comic strips and the gag cartoons of the same era, is primarily that of length. The comic strip will tell a story in a series of images with text attached in speech-bubbles or captions.
Some of the most famous comic strips that use this traditional method are still in use today. From its beginning in 1950, the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz published a total of 17.897 strips before the death of Schulz signaled the end of the cartoon. The success of the Peanuts comic strip led to the four-panel gag strip becoming the industry standard for comic strips in the United States.
Peanuts would be one of the pioneers of the cartoon transition from comic strip to television and film. Others that would make the move with varied success include Dennis the Menace, Dick Tracy, Andy Capp and Garfield. The motion picture would be the biggest step in the evolution of the cartoon, most famously made by the films of cartoon legend Walt Disney. 
Disneys first venture into animated film is shown in the Alice Comedies, a series of short films that combine a real girl with an animated cat, all set in front of an animated landscape. This technique was revolutionary and signaled the direction of future live-action/animations including Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam in the 1990s.
Disney would go on to create some of the most influential cartoons in history, including the most recognisable cartoon character of all - Mickey Mouse. Mickey was created in 1928, first appearing in the Plane Crazy cartoon with his long-term beau Minnie. Mickey went on to star in hundreds of cartoons and remains the most popular cartoon character that Disney ever created, ahead of the likes of Donald Duck, Dumbo and Pinocchio.
The change in media to animated film paved the way for some of the most influential cartoons of the 20th century. As well as the massive number of Disney films that would change the landscape of film forever, many other cartoons would light up the silver screen as the years passed. Warner Bros.  cartoons began soon after Disneys inception and would introduce the world to a number of amazing characters that remain popular to this day.
Bugs Bunny appeared for the first time on screen in the 1940 animation A Wild Hare. In 2002, Bugs Bunny was named by a popular television magazine as the greatest cartoon character of all time. Other popular Warner Bros. characters include Speedy Gonzales, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.
Another popular company to produce animated cartoons was the American company, Hanna-Barbera. Responsible for some of the most respected cartoon series in the latter part of the 20th century, Hanna-Barbera produces classics including Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and The Flintstones. These animations would influence some of the biggest hits of the century, as cartoons began to mimic real-life and have more realistic characters instead of the animals or fantasy stories of Disney and Warner Bros.
As the animated film became the most common place to find cartoon characters, the style, themes and techniques changed dramatically. As situation comedies dominated TV schedules on both sides of the Atlantic, animators would look to recreate this style with cartoons as the main characters. Out of this concept, the most popular animated series of all time was born as the world was introduced to The Simpsons.
The Simpsons were as far removed from the likes of Walt Disney as could be possible. The fantasy, fairy-tale style that was so prevalent in Disneys cartoons was replaced by crude, raw animations of a American family. Launched in the late 1980s, the cartoon has remained immensely popular with over 400 episodes and a feature-length movie grossing almost 600 million dollars worldwide.
The Simpsons would be criticised by conservative sections of the US as they claimed it provided bad role-models in the forms of the lazy, incompetent Homer and the naughty, disruptive Bart. The Simpsons would show a normal, working-class family in some realistic and some unrealistic scenarios, yet the characters themselves were always believable and empathetic. The disruptive, anarchic style and often controversial episodes would pave the way for even more controversy and animators pushed the boundaries of acceptability in cartoons.
The most controversial cartoon series of the 20th century would follow The Simpsons with regressive cut-out animation, cartoon violence and satirical story-lines. South Park would parody popular culture and satirise current events, but would arrive amidst a storm of controversy for its toilet humour and offensive language. 
174 episodes later, South Park has been running for twelve series and has achieved Academy Award nominations for its feature-length South Park: Bigger, Longer Uncut. Despite its seemingly puerile beginnings, South Park would develop into a cutting social commentary, satirising subjects as diverse as euthanasia, the church of scientology, sexuality and global terrorism.
The Simpsons and South Park represent the current crop of exciting, contemporary cartoons that will influence the cartoons of the future. There are already countless other cartoons that borrow style, themes and humour from these two pace-setters, with the likes of Family Guy, American Dad and Futurama continuing the trend. 
However, Disney has been opting for computer animations with its most recent films including Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and WALL-E. So is the art of the cartoon dying out in the modern cartoons home - Florida? With new film-makers, animators and artists always looking for the next-big-thing, cartoons will always be popular for creators and the viewers, so the cartoon will continue to go from strength to strength.

The abandonment wound, stored deep within the limbic brain, is easily triggered. You feel its raw nerve twinge when you fail to get recognition at work, a friend forgets to invite you to a party, or a date you thought was special did not call back. When being left is the trigger, core abandonment fears erupt. Stress hormones course through our bodies, compelling even the strongest among us to feel desperate and dependent. However self-sufficient we think we are, we suddenly feel we cant live without him/her.
Being left also kicks up our control issues. The breakup wasn't our choice. Someone else cast us into this aloneness by choosing not to be with us. We feel at loss of our personal power to compel another person's love. "I must be unlovable and unworthy for him to discard me like that." Abandonment is similar to other types of bereavement, but its grief is complicated by rejection and betrayal. We turn the rage against ourselves, accounting for the severe depression that accompanies heartbreak. When we blame the breakup on our supposed inadequacies, we abandon ourselves. We automatically think to ourselves, There must be something wrong with me that makes me not worth keeping.
We emerge not only disconnected from self-love, but with a heightened fear of abandonment. If one person can discard us, we fear others will do the same to us in the future. Rather than dissipate, this fear tends to incubate. Its insecurity burrows deep within us where it sabotages our relationships. The fear of being left makes it more difficult to let go. The rejection creates nagging conflict; closure remains incomplete. We feel unjustly dismissed and we long for an opportunity to vindicate the hurt. We are left alone to grapple with the broken pieces. Mixed with our rage is a desire for our ex to come back to take away the hurt and rejection.
The paradox of abandonment is the tendency to idealize the abandoner. He or she emerges in our imaginations as a powerful figure. We assume she must be very special to have caused this much torment simply by being absent. The intense craving is confusing to our limbic brain. Stress hormones course through our bodies, causing a heightened response to anything related to our ex for a long time. An important thing to understand is there are five universal stages that accompany the loss of love: Shattering, Withdrawal, Internalizing, Rage, and Lifting. As we make our way through these stages of grief and recovery, we build self-esteem, resolve fear and self-doubt and restore the spirit.
The Five Stages of Abandonment are: 1. Shattering: Severing of love-connection, devastation, shattering of hopes and dreams. The emotions are shock, panic, despair, feeling you can't live without your love. 2. Withdrawal: You're in painful withdrawal of love-loss, as intense as heroin withdrawal. The emotions are yearning, craving, obsessing, longing for your ex's return. 3. Internalizing: As you try to making sense of the rejection, you doubt and blame yourself. Idealizing the abandoner at your own expense, narcissistic injury sets in and fear incubates. 4. Rage: Reversing the rejection and having retaliatory feelings. Displacing anger on friends who don't understand or are critical of the abandoner leads to more unhealthy action. 5. Lifting: Rising out despair, life begins to distract you. You begin to open to love again and all its possibilities. Arsene Wenger today made his case for abolishing UEFA's away goal rule that serves as the primary tie-breaker in European competition. The illustrious coach of Arsenal FC told the Guardian he felt "the weight of the away goal is too heavy now tactically - it was created 42 years ago at a stage when the teams that went abroad just defended. But now when you play in your own stadium without conceding you have a good chance to go through. So it has reversed the situation."

Actually, we don't quite follow Wenger's logic here; after all, a team needs to win its home leg, not just play for a 0-0 tie--so it's more than simply not conceding goals at home. Sure, home sides may sit back and defend a 1-0 lead once they have established it. And teams that have the lead coming into the home leg will obviously look to dig in their defenses. But we would think the initial impetus is to attack, at least until the first goal is scored.

Nevertheless, Wenger is right about the away goal being outdated. Not only that, it never really made much sense in the first place. What is so incredibly vital about scoring a goal in a foreign stadium that makes it the defacto tie-breaker? Not only that, but the way the rule is set up now away goals can count as much as double; if a team wins its home leg 2-1 it's not like it has a one goal lead. The game is effectively tied, because once the opposing team scores on the return leg it doesn't only erase the one goal deficit, it goes ahead!

Still, we think the away goal rule serves an important purpose: to significantly reduce the chances that a penalty shoot-out will decide the affair. Take away the rule and you'll suddenly see a massive spike in the amount of penalty shoot-outs. And penalty shoot-outs suck for a whole host of different reasons (too many to list here. Suffice it to say if you like penalty shoot-outs you're either a fan of the Italian national team or an idiot or both). If Monsieur Wenger thinks UEFA competitions are defensive now, let him see what they'd be like without the away goal rule! We'd see every single inferior team on the planet bunkering down and playing for penalties. It's bad enough when that happens during a World Cup or Euro quarter- or semi-final, which are one game. These UEFA matches are two! That's 210 minutes of booo-ring soccer!

So yes, away goals carry too much weight now. But absent a better rule for deciding ties (which has apparently remained elusive ever since medieval townfolk first started kicking around animal intestines) abolishing the rule would be a big mistake. Wenger told the Guardian he presented these views to UEFA and that there was "warm reception" to his idea. Here's hoping it was hot air.

Both conservative and liberal leaning Hollywood filmmakers are hoping to sway the November election with a couple of films that they hope will become their own "October Surprise". However, it is highly unlikely that either film will pack theaters and both will likely be quick to end up on DVDs that will make better Frisbees than anything. Unfortunately both a film by Oliver Stone about George Bush entitled "W" and an anti-Michael Moore film, AN AMERICAN CAROL, really seem to miss their mark by miles.
Both films attempt to use some sense of larger than life parody, exaggeration and comedy, especially the conservative leaning anti-Michael Moore film, which falls into the shallow one note attacks of many conservatives who accuse others of not being patriotic or use shallow one inch deep personal attacks rather than intellectualize the arguments of their political rivals.
Where the anti-Michael Moore film goes horribly wrong is the absurd assumption that Michael Moore is anti-American and not patriotic. The real Michael Moore may be left leaning politically, but that hardly means that he would support doing away with the 4th of July like the outrageous character in the film. The real Michael Moore is mainly a consumer advocate concerned with the public abuses by some large corporations or some lawmakers who are pawns of these corporate swindlers. And the cast of AN AMERICAN CAROL which includes some like Bill O'Reilly are hardly widely considered as masters of comedy by any means. And the Michael Moorelike character in the film is played by Kevin Farley, the younger and far less talented brother of the late comic, Chris Farley. Other than bringing in gross obesity to the role, Farley really brings in little to the film.
Producer/Director David Zucker used to be known for some pretty good comedy gems like AIRPLANE! or the Leslie Nielsen NAKED GUN films. And the aging Leslie Neilsen does play some small role in this film. But it hardly holds a stick to these past achievements by any means. And with a cast of fellow conservative leaning actors like Kelsey Grammer, Trace Adkins, Jon Voight and Dennis Hopper, the Republican leaning Zucker has really tipped his hand from making films for all viewers, producing a biased right leaning personal attack on Moore and a pointless political propaganda film that absolutely misses the moral calling that draws the real life Moore to produce films attacking corporate corruption and naked greed.
It's almost like 1950's type redbaiting to continue to attack the patriotism of many liberals or even leftists, yet this is also part of this film's shallow attack on Moore. The real Michael Moore was brought up in a good Irish Catholic family where he once considered becoming a Catholic priest. It is this moral background deeply embedded in his early Catholic faith that has most encouraged Moore's battle at what he most likely considers to be corporate immorality and sin that has most likely inspired his moral crusades against corporate sins in the health care industry and other areas. Zucker's mindless film never digs this deep by any means, instead showcases the grossly overweight and talentless Farley as a complete boob who hates America. Simply outrageous trash can material at it's very best.
Liberal leaning, conspiracy theorist filmmaker, Oliver Stone's W film has some faults of it's own as well. Oliver Stone is indeed a top flight filmmaker compared to Zucker who mainly uses endless sight gags in many of his films thinly glued together with a lightweight premise. Zucker uses a premise, any premise in fact, just to hang a few jokes and sight gags on. But Oliver Stone is by contrast a real and true and complete filmmaker who is certainly capable of making a great film if the subject is right.

So I got up and walked my distracted ass out to the kitchen, discovered I had washed the bowl, then went back to my desk, but now Iapos;m thinking about those little canned shrimp, and wondering...now if shrimp have heads, and they do, how the HELL do they cut the heads off all those little shrimp? I mean, theyapos;re the size of a fingernail. Is that someoneapos;s job? To go through all those tiny little baby shrimp and cut their heads off with a tiny little baby knife?

I then left the web page about distraction and writers block, and googled canned shrimp heads and what becomes of them, if in fact they exist, because I started thinking maybe the little ones havenapos;t developed heads yet or something, I donapos;t know.

I never did find my answer. Nor did I get any work done. Nor did I finish reading the article about how to avoid distraction.

Tonight, we were out in a neighborhood selling Cub Scout popcorn and Franklin forgot to collect a check from a sale. Thank you, God, for miraculously making the brakes work extra well on the SUV. Honestly, I believe in miracles and by the speed the vehicle was traveling and the timing that Franklin ran out, I don't think the vehicle should have been able to stop in time. Praise be to God!!

Now I sit here 30 minutes later... waiting for my pulse to slow down. Praying that my kids will remain safe for many, many years to come. Grateful for the joy they bring to my life.

This is a strategy that all gamblers use in order to live with their problem, as often the real implications of what they are doing are too horrible to contemplate. But if a member can be honest about the pain that their gambling is actually creating, their motivation will be increased to find a solution. Such honesty is possible if the member senses that GA is really offering a way out.
3. Identification with other members. In the GA context, members tell their stories about their gambling and what they have done in order to stop gambling. After awhile, it is possible to see the similarity beneath all the stories, as far as the progressiveness of the dis-ease goes and the futility of other methods used to stop gambling. What emerges from such a reading of those stories is an awareness in the new member that what he has been suffering from is actually a definable condition with a definable solution. The new member can then draw the conclusion that if those members have overcome their gambling problem, perhaps I can too. Hope for oneself is felt and this energy can be used to pursue the solution. Conversely, those members who are still at the point where they are trying to devise personal solutions to outwit their gambling or are looking for hints as to how to gamble will hear the stories in such a way so as to justify their own continued gambling, i.e., At least Im not as bad as that guy.
4. Accepting that the solution has a spiritual componet and a willingness to explore the solution in that context. In the broadest of terms, compulsive gambling can be thought of as a The gambler often finds himself acting against his best intentions and is puzzled by his seemingly powerlessness to just not gamble. The compulsion to do so is experienced as a powerful urge and seems to have a life of its own within the gamblers mind. The gambler uses his willpower to try and control the power of his compulsive gambling but is ultimately always unsuccessful. The GA program acknowledges this power and admits that it cannot be controlled by the individual. What can be done is for the gambler to acquire a stronger, competing power in order to supercede the power of gambling. This is the ultimate goal of the Twelve Steps. GA is not offering the traditional religious solution that one might associate with such a discussion but, rather, asks that the individual formulate a personal spirituality that might or might not include traditional religious componets. With all successful GA members, on some level, they have found a source of strength beyond their own unaided wills that has enabled them to stop gambling.
5. Regular attendance at meetings.

Poker Trillion is a former customer of Boss Media who was terminated because of rake back violations. In April 2008 Poker Trillion alleged in a press release a claim that among other things, Boss Media player funds were frozen. The allegations were false but typical of the type of tactics employed by Poker Trillion.
While there has been no hearing on the merits of the Poker Trillion suit, there have been preliminary hearings on the matter. Boss Media has assured that adequate security is provided in Malta in the event of an award of damages against it which we believe to be unlikely.
Boss Media is currently exploring various legal options regarding our Maltese assets and can assure that Boss Media has the requisite assets in place to ensure that our business will continue to operate with the highest standards. So I left $9 richer. I gave the housekeeper who made my room at the holiday inn a $5 tip, so I only had $4 left. Thats my only experience gambling. A winner.

Atelevision ad supporting Proposition 8 implies that gay marriage would have to be in California public schools unless the right of same-sex couples to marry is overturned. It makes me wonder: What exactly do you teach when you teach gay marriage? How to get same-sex weddings announced in the New York Times?

And, wait a second: If gay marriage would have to be taught, is heterosexual marriage already in the curriculum? Do teachers say Today, boys and girls, we're going to learn about passive aggressive behavior related to laundry? Are there workbook exercises called Ten things I'm accusing you of that really have to do with my own insecurities? And don't those lessons already cross over to gay marriage?

As it turns out, the only thing in the education code related to marriage has to do with teaching the legal and financial aspects and responsibilities of marriage and parenthood. Moreover, it's only a requirement for school districts seeking state funds for health education, which not every school does.

In other words, no matter what happens with Proposition 8, Secrets for Meeting and Marrying the Same-Sex Partner of Your Dreams won't make the syllabus, at least not because of the education code the ad references. Granted, if gay marriage remains legal, a thoughtful teacher (especially of older kids) might see fit to acknowledge that fact. (Pitt also donated $100,000 to fighting Proposition 8.) There was that run on San Francisco City Hall the first time it was legal -- with pictures of happy couples all over every kind of news media. And then the second coming of all that, when the state Supreme Court weighed in.

Still, just because gay marriage is nothing new for the general public doesn't mean kids necessarily understand the complete concept. But that doesn't have as much to do with homosexuality as it does with the fact that some young people can't tell the difference between getting married and going on a really long date. So maybe marriage class should be mandatory -- with an emphasis not on gay or straight but, rather, (As in, until you're older.)

Of course, in many ways it was always thus -- or at least it has been since Queen Victoria transformed the white wedding gown from a garment into a genre -- the lavish white wedding -- unto itself. One cable wedding show, MTV's Engaged and Underage, follows very young couples in the weeks before their weddings, and takes such a starry-eyed view of taffeta dresses and towering cakes that no amount of sobering footage can counteract the ultimate effect: glorifying what may well be the biggest mistake these kids will ever make.

Oh, and by the way, Engaged and Underage has featured a 19-year-old lesbian couple who met on MySpace and got engaged six weeks later. That's ground- breaking stuff, mostly because it proves that marriage-related stupidity isn't just for straight people anymore.

And that's why students need marriage-ed. They need it because we're being taught to associate marriage not with permanent commitment but with social status, diamond rings, gifts, throwing a big party and, for women, wearing a dress that doesn't necessarily fit through the door. As a result, many teens of all sexual orientations (and many adults too) not only confuse sex with love, they confuse the long-term implications of marriage with the short-term gratification of wedding and honeymoon planning.

No matter what happens with Proposition 8, the way the education code is worded, it's unlikely that a lot of classroom time will ever get devoted to thinking deeply about marriage of any brand. That's a shame, because what students desperately need to be steered toward is not straight marriage or gay marriage but grown-up marriage. Now that would be radical.

MiniMotel is a personal tent for camping out in airports when a flight is, oh lets say, delayed. Or maybe you just want to be there really, really early so you dont have to rush through traffic and miss your flight.  But tell me this: who would actually bother pulling out a tent, setting it up (even though it looks simple enough) and then rush like mad (while cursing) when the flight is resumed? My personal experience with Ebay dates back to the last 18 months or so. I signed up on Ebay after thinking over it many times, because I wanted to give it a try.
I like reading books and some time I have up to 3 different books I am in the process of reading and I knew that it is possible to find cheap deals on Ebay.
I was lazy to sign up, but I must confess that it was pretty much fast, it did not take too long. I never thought about selling anything on Ebay.
After my registration was done I searched for few books my list. Most of them were available on Ebay and I placed a bid for each of them.
I also put a maximum bid of 2 Pounds. I need to pay also the postal charges which are nearly 2 pounds.
I won an auction for one book and I was surprized that all the other books sold for more than 2 pounds!
I asked one of my friends who at that time had a paypal account to send the money and I got the book delivered in few days.
After that I set up my own paypal account.
I have probably bought a total of 9 books (if I remember correctly) on Ebay. On 2 occasions I found that the book was not in the conditions described on the site, but in general things went well.
