November 20: Komedy for Kidneys Benefit Show We are pleased to host an evening of comedy featuring the talents of home-grown comedians Rodney Pentland and Mark Matthews along with three-time Canadian Comedy Awards winner, Nikki Payne.  The Komedy for Kidneys Benefit Show takes place on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the Greg Frewin Theatre. Doors open at 7 PM and the show begins at 8 PM.  Proceeds from the event will benefit GNGHs plans to construct a Kidney Dialysis Centre in Niagara Falls.

Like in many other major cities of the developing world, informal activity accounts for a big part of the economy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Whether that means shining shoes on a street corner or living in a house built on occupied land, residents of these cities have chosen to live slightly outside the law rather than comply with cumbersome regulations that would make it nearly impossible for them to do the same thing legally. In Buenos Aires specifically, the subway makes for a fascinating case study of this phenomenon, since on any given ride passengers can expect to see a number of vendors peddling goods from stickers to bootleg DVDs to ankle and wrist braces. This forced collision brings together the public, many of whom live and work entirely within the “formal” sector, the informal workers, and the privately-owned space of the subway system. This summer, I studied and interviewed these itinerant subway vendors in an effort to understand why they came to do this kind of work. While I heard a range of personal histories from the 18 vendors I interviewed, one thing common to each story was the terrible labor conditions that sent them running from the formal world.

In an ugly act of racial and political intimidation, four supporters sympathetic to John McCain who are students at the the small Christian George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, confessed to hanging a life-sized Obama effigy from a tree at the entrance of the college with the words, "Act 6 Reject" scrawled on the figure. The Act 6 program is a minority scholarship program.
The goal of those that hung the life-sized cardboard figure of Barack Obama in effigy seemed pretty clearly aimed at both intimidating any supporters of Barack Obama and also making any minority students feel unwelcome and unsafe at the college. It was like posting a death threat to any Obama supporters or to any minorities that they are not welcome at the Christian college and should leave for their safety. It is closely related to terrorism in attempting to incite fear to control others.
Administrators were outraged at this disgusting display of racial and political intimidation and held an event at the school's chapel to address this outrageous hate act. And the FBI is actively investigating the act of racial prejudice and may file federal charges against the four students who are currently under suspension from the school.
So far the McCain-Palin Campaign has been silent on this hate crime act. But both McCain and Palin are on record as opposing hate crimes laws at both state and federal levels. Both have a clear of record of weakness when it comes to support for prosecuting those who use racial intimidation or death threats against minorities. It seems highly unlikely that anyone from the McCain Campaign will offer any statement condemning this hate crime.
The John McCain record is so poor on minority issues that only a mere 36 African American delegates were at the Republican National Convention this year. One of the lowest numbers in years. Many minorities recognize that John McCain is no friend to their shared values of justice, equality or law enforcement against hate crimes. John McCain's right wing economics continue to keep many minorities in economic slavery as well and have diminished their standard of living.
John McCain has continued to compare himself to Barry Goldwater over the years. However, during the 1964 campaign it was Barry Goldwater's vice presidential candidate, Arthur Miller who accepted the support of the Ku Klux Klan during the campaign, creating an embarrassing situation for Goldwater that year which was just another factor in his landslide loss that year.
With his opposition to the Martin Luther King Holiday, civil rights legislation and hate crimes laws, John McCain has one of the worst records of any GOP candidate for president in many years on combating racism in America. It is hard to imagine that such a candidate is running in the party of Abraham Lincoln who was so devoted to racial justice for all Americans. And the racist incident at George Fox university is just an ugly reminder of the shallow reason that a few supporters are drawn to John McCain.
But one major Oregon Republican seems to have stepped up to make a strong statement perhaps inspired by this hate crime. Republican Senator Gordon Smith has begun airing new ads last week that show his bipartisan support with Senator Edward Kennedy for supporting increased penalties for hate crimes. Senator Smith represents the broad number of decent Republicans who reject hate crimes, racial violence or using racist effigy figures to intimidate minorities or Obama supporters.
While some supporters of John McCain such as the racists who hung the Obama effigy may want to make this election a referendum on race, the Obama Campaign has always taken the high road in this campaign, making this election about the economy, character and issues. That's where most Americans are and will be on election day as well.

Last week, I suffered from having personal-life stuff leaving me in no mood to blog when I needed to, and not a great deal to discuss, either. This week, the list of potential talking points is as long as your arm, and I simply can't do the meat of this book justice.

First of note is that Dorothy L. Sayers completes her masterly misdirection and reveals Miss Ann Dorland to be quite a sympathetic character. She's certainly stupid, and Sayers doesn't mince words about her poor choices, but it's incredibly interesting to see Lord Peter Wimsey insist that there must be more to her than the grouchy, uncooperative jerk who consented to be interviewed by Inspector Parker and be proven right. So she done it all for love, as they say. I am intrigued by the slow revelations that Miss Dorland is completely unsuited to the hedonistic lifestyle of all the pretty young things of the artistic community. LPW quickly dismisses her painting as poor and amateurish, and she deluded herself that her relationship with Dr. Penberthy was an engagement. There are some very interesting suggestions about her sexual appetite being a "mania," but one thing seems certain: she's not capable of going to bed with a man and subsequently thinking that it's more than sex. This is the wrong crowd for her.

But Dr. Penberthy is the real murderer, and Miss Dorland merely an unwitting accomplice. I can't stress this part enough: while by this point, Sayers had completed three novels and a handful of short stories, all of them remarkably entertaining in one way or another, she really elevated herself to one of the greats with the climax of this book. It's bloodchilling. The dispassionate way that LPW and Penberthy discuss the only way out which will exonerate Miss Dorland just left me white. The television adaptation is pretty amazing as well, in its creepy silence and cold stares, but the restrictions of time made it impossible to do it justice, so they changed the pacing. In the novel, Penberthy is given half an hour to write his confession and clear his thoughts while LPW and Col. Marchbanks discuss the unpleasantness, and then, when Marchbanks produces a revolver, which, beautifully, is never actually identified as a revolver, merely "the thing," and leaves it within reach of Penberthy, it comes as a release after the buildup of the tension. On TV, LPW and Marchbanks had already discussed this offscreen and Penberthy not given a half hour, and so the handover of the gun really only starts the tension, which is increased while the duo retire to the club's bar for a drink and await the shot. There are only the most minimal changes in what actually happens, but the way the event is staged makes it a very different experience.

I was struck by another change as well. In the first episode, I wondered whether LPW's strange generosity with money might have been a conscious decision to soften the character for TV, and make him more palatable to a post-World War Two audience. Well, when LPW is called by Sheila Fentiman in the middle of the night in a panic after George's latest disappearance, something similar occurs to me. Now, in the novel, LPW briefly gets rid of the Fentimans' landlord, Mr. Munns, by asking him to get the fellow at the nearby pub to let him have an after-hours bottle of whiskey. In the TV version, he has Munns ring up Bunter instead to bring a bottle. This places Bunter at the Fentimans' flat when Mr. Munns tells this ghoulish anecdote about a neighbor who also suffered from shellshock and blackouts and murdered his family. As inappropriate anecdotes go, this really takes some topping. Naturally, in the novel, LPW coldly and firmly tells him to shut his idiot mouth. But the television Wimsey is an altogether nicer and cheerier sort of fellow, and Ian Carmichael delivers dialogue which is often very accurate, but with a little more sunshine than those lines might otherwise be read. So it falls to Bunter to savagely tell Munns to drop it.

There's a lot more to be said, including Sayers name-checking and tipping her hat at length to her predecessor in detective fiction, Austin Freeman, but that will do for now. It's a fantastic book, go and read it, and be here next time when we spend a couple of weeks on the last two of the original dozen short stories.

Liars Poker comes in a couple of different flavors. The first may be more comfortable as it is a tradition card game and the later is not. The game begins with each player starting with two quarters. Everyone is then dealt two cards down. The first player calls a poker hand. The next player has the option of either calling a hand which beats the previous hand or challenging the previous players call. If a person challenges the hand, then everyones cards are pooled to determine if the hand exists. If it does, the person who called the game loses one of his quarters and starts the next game, with only one card dealt to him. If it does not, the player who called the hand loses the quarter. After a player has their second quarter taken away, the player is out. Deck is reshuffled after each round. Game ends and the pooled change is awarded when only one person has a quarter left.

The Lions are excellent because as we know, consistency is excellence. Detroit has been consistently awful this decade and they've somehow regressed back to the Mariucci era in 2008. I would love to work with them if the character is challenging enough and the story is interesting.
Do you see the success of a director before you ink a deal?
What matters is the script and the character. If I feel that the story is powerful enough, I would go for it. Even if a director offers me a movie with exactly five scenes or its a blink-and-miss role, I wouldnt think twice before accepting it provided its something challenging and never been done before.
How about working with a debutant director?
Its a subjective question. It would depend on a lot of factors like the script, characters, etc.
With Priyanka Chopra being considered the girl, would it be Priyanka the action girl or Priyanka the romantic actor?
I do not want to pigeon-hole myself into any cinematic frame. I would like to be known as Priyanka the actor; as someone who can play any role with ease.

Over the past few weeks, our children have been working on personal narrative stories, and Fridaywas a culmination of that process.  During the personal narrative unit students learned ways to generate seed ideas; learned ways to organize and plan their writing; practiced using colorful language; learned how to begin the story with a catchy lead and endings; learned how to edit work for spelling and punctuation errors; and learned how to write about important details.
During the celebration, the children had their published story on their desks and next to it a compliment sheet for other readers to leave comments. Beforehand we discussed as a class ‘good compliments’ and compliments that showed ‘next steps’ for the writer. Each child was then expected to walk around to the other classes, read four to five stories in each class, and leave a comment for the writer.

We wanted to share that with you for a couple of reasons everything that she had been praying in those prayers were fulfilled in that encounter. By seeing Jesus he gave her the peace that she had prayed for; she knew that HE was with her, that he was waiting on her and that he was her healer and deliverer. And the most important part was she knew how much Jesus loved her and how important forgiveness is.

I think if she were with us right now she would want to remind us of these 2 main things:
1. First, is forgiveness. She knew that through salvation Jesus had forgiven her and more importantly she knew through the experiences she had with him on that Saturday morning that he wanted her to walk in forgiveness. I encourage you today right now that if you have un-forgiveness toward someone to forgive them. When we refuse to forgive someone it only keeps us hurting and bound up, it keeps us walking in anger it really does not affect the person we havent forgiven. I know that she would want each and everyone of us to forgive - you know one of those other prayers she had marked was about letting go of anger and forgiving. In honor of her do that today forgive anyone that you have held anger toward. Release them it doesnt mean that what they did to you was right but dont hold un-forgiveness toward them. Make a decision today in honor of Geneva Katherine Hughes that you are going to forgive them and release them.
2. Secondly, we believe she would want everyone here to know that Jesus loves you so much. The Bible says in Romans 8:38-39 I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from Gods love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrownot even the powers of hell can separate us from Gods love. No power in the sky above or in the earth belowindeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Whether you have ever accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior or not does not change the fact that he loves you so much. I know that Grandma would say accept Jesus today make Him your Lord and Savior. Accept the person who loves you unconditionally, who doesnt make you get everything in our life before we come to him. The Bible says in Romans 5:8 that while we were lost in our sins Christ died for us. She would say accept that free gift of salvation today. She would not want you to miss out on the wonderful relationship with Jesus that she had here on this earth and that she is now experiencing in heaven. No amount of cards, flowers or money could honor her life more than giving your life to Jesus today.

And for those of us who have made Jesus our Lord to understand there is nothing we have done in our past that can separate us from Gods love. No amount of sin or wrongdoing can separate us from Gods love. God loves you so much and she would want you to know that today that you can walk out of here knowing the vastness of God loves for you, that he is for you, he wants to be a part of your life and he has a great plan for you.

Lastly, she would want us to know that she is truly finally HOME. That on September 12th Jesus met Geneva Katherine Hughes face to face and that she is now enjoying the peace and beauty of heaven. Thank you.

God is so good. Through the experience she had with him she was able to be at peace those last few days PLUS it gave us the family peace as well. God did not allow her to suffer with the pain for months on end - he took her quickly and peacefully. I will miss her immensely but am so thankful she is in heaven free of pain and worshiping her savior.

In June 1997, both Palin and I had responsibilities at the graduation ceremony of a small group of Wasilla area home schoolers. I directed the Mat-Su College Community Band, which played music, and she gave the commencement address. It was held at her church, the Wasilla Assembly of God.

As the ceremony concluded, I bumped into her in a hall away from other people. I congratulated her on her victory, and took her aside to ask about her faith. Among other things, she declared that she was a young earth creationist, accepting both that the world was about 6,000-plus years old, and that humans and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time.


I asked how she felt about the second coming and the end times. She responded that she fully believed that the signs of Jesus returning soon "during MY lifetime," were obvious. "I can see that, maybe you can't - but it guides me every day."


Our next discussion about religion was after she had switched to the less strict Wasilla Bible Church. She was speaking at, I was performing bugle, at a Veterans ceremony between Wasilla and Palmer. At this time, people were beginning to encourage her to run for Governor.

Once again, we found ourselves being able to talk privately. I reminded her of the earlier conversation, asking her if her views had changed. She was no longer "necessarily" a young earth creationist, she told me. But she strongly reiterated her belief that "The Lord is coming soon." I was trying to get her to tell me what she felt the signs were, when she had to move on.

Last Thursday, when Oregon St upset USC 27-21 in Corvallis, Oregon the assumption was that USC had a bad game. Not to many people gave Oregon St credit because obviously a team like USC does not get beat by a team like Oregon St right? Well, I think Oregon St out played USC and the team that beat Ohio St 35-3 is not as good as the nation thinks.

First of all, the first half of this game was all Oregon St, the Beavers went into halftime up 21-0 then the Trojans allowed Jacquizz Rodgers to rush for 186 yards, which was the most yards Rodgers rushed for all season. What does this say about USC? Well, I know the truth hurts but the Trojans are not as good as everyone thinks.

Every year we hear about all the talent USC has and how they are stacked at all positions, but all of this talent finds away to get beat by teams that are less than average. Pete Carroll is a good coach and that is obvious but I do not think he, like his team, is as great as many people like to think. Carroll is a big game coach, but what is the point of being a big game coach when you cant beat the average joes? When you are getting beat by the Stanfords and the Oregon Sts then the big games are not so big anymore.

Also, it appears that people are starting to question the way Carroll coaches his players. There is chatter on message boards about Petes lack of ability to prepare his players for the NFL. So is USCs program starting to crumble? I am not saying it is, but I will say that I do not see what the hype is all about.

And on a side note, I have taken some heat about my articles. If you want to read the facts and the same repetitive information you find on every other website by every other writer then just ignore my articles. If you want to read an article that will be sugar coated so that no ones feelings will get hurt then just skip write over mine, but if you want to be entertained and read a different opinion than what the rest of the world is saying then you are reading the right articles. I do not want to publish an article that states a bunch of BS just because I want to make people happy, I am going to tell you what I think and if you dont like it then go cry somewhere else. Get over it, not everyone on the face of this Earth shares the same opinions so take my articles for what they worth and dont take shots at me personally just because you do not agree with my opinions.

The very first of the American Bill of Rights begins, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . ." The Supreme Court of the United States has long interpreted the first amendment of the constitution to mean that the government cannot use its enormous resources, power, and influence to favor one religion over others. In this doctrine, the State and the Church must remain independent. This is the principle of "The Separation of Church and State."
The intention was to prohibit the establishment of a specific state religion and to protect other religions from persecution. Thus, America became a land of religious freedom, tolerance, and diversity.
Again the goal was to protect the religious freedom of all citizens, i.e., the complete freedom of human beings to determine their own religious beliefs, which can only exist if the power of the government is not used to shape the religious beliefs of the citizens. To protect this most holy freedom, there must be NO actions by the State favoring one form of religious belief over any other.
In 1994, this inspired doctrine was clarified further when the Supreme Court concluded that "government should not prefer one religion to another, or religion to irreligion." The government's sacred job is to protect the complete freedom of sentient humans to determine their own religious beliefs, and to do so, the government must not enter into the business of promoting any particular form of religious belief.
Many of the religious fanatics who want to do away with the Separation of Church and State actually harbor the paranoid delusion that their most sacred holiday, you know, the one where they celebrate the immaculate conception and birth of God's son to a virgin by engaging in a frenzied orgy of shopping and consumption is in grave danger! In their conspiracy theory belief system, the dark forces of secular humanism (comprising far less than 10% of the American population) have declared a War on Christmas. And, of course, the Christianity that each such group of religious fanatics propose to make part of America's legal Constitution just happens to be THEIR particular version of Christianity.
Anyone in the mood for a few hundred years of religious warfare? Apparently, a large segment of the American electorate needs a reminder of what it is like to have governments controlled by one group's religious point of view.
In the face of such widespread historical ignorance about why the framers of the Constitution felt a need to separate the state from religion, religious freedom cannot be taken for granted. This divine freedom enshrined in the Constitution could be eroded and eventually vanish altogether. For the maintenance of freedom in a democracy to be assured, a better educated electorate is required; the people must have an understanding of the relationship between laws and rights. And the understanding needed for the maintenance of religious freedom in a democracy is diminishing in America.
For example, many Americans found nothing wrong with the Bush Administration's erosion of the Separation of Church and State when Bush instituted long prohibited government grants to "faith-based" organizations.

So how do our political leaders respond to the critical importance of education in the maintenance of a robust democracy? In their ostensible concern about the quality of education that children receive in public schools, many of America's elected officials are now promoting school vouchers. Vouchers will turn taxes collected by the government over to parents who can use them to send their children to the school of their choice.
More freedom! Choice and competition (the almighty engines of the free market) will improve the quality of education! Sounds good, doesn't it? Yet a little consideration of the consequences should make it clear that this would pose a far greater threat to American democracy than Saddam Hussein with real WMD's!
The 8yr reign of the Bush administration should make clear, today only a precarious allegiance to the Constitution is maintained by politicians put in place by an electorate that hasn't much of a clue about the importance of the Separation of Church and State. This precarious allegiance could very well reach "a tipping point" (to coin a phrase). Indeed, school vouchers should enable the religious right to reach their stated (!) goal, the destruction of America's religious freedom.
Consider this. It is the very same people who want to make the U.S. a "Christian" nation and are terribly concerned about "the carnage" from the War on Christmas who are the most vociferous supporters of school vouchers. Why? Because what will inevitably happen is that an even larger number of families will then be able to afford to remove their children from public schools (that are currently prohibited from fostering any particular religious notions) and send them to private, parochial (i.e., religious) schools.
The end result of such a change in how the government spends/disburses tax money earmarked for education is that many more millions of American children will be withdrawn from secular, public schools and sent to parochial schools. So don't worry; since parochial schools are believed by some to provide a better all-around education, we can rest assured that the next generation of Americans will have a more thorough understanding of the importance of the Separation of Church and State!

A Product Review: I registered for this playmat not sure if our baby was going to like it, but when I received it, I thought it was bright and cheerful and the right size for our already cluttered living room! I feel like my subconscious is trying to tell me something. My dreams lately have again, been littered with the north, but mainly breast feeding. We, in the billiard industry, are especially appreciative of what he did for the sport. Even now, almost 50 years after its release, The Hustler still captures todays pool enthusiasts and holds them in its' spell. Whenever we have the film showing in our billiard hall, people still comment on what a great film it is.

"The Hustler is a 1961 American drama film. It tells the story of small-time pool hustler, "Fast Eddie" Felson, and his desire to prove himself the best player in the country by beating legendary pool player "Minnesota Fats." After initially losing to Fats and getting involved with unscrupulous manager Bert Gordon, Eddie returns to beat Fats, but only after paying a terrible personal price.

The Hustler is an adaptation of the 1959 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. Sidney Carroll and Robert Rossen adapted the novel for the screen. Rossen directed the film, shot on location in New York City. It stars Paul Newman as Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, Piper Laurie as Sarah and George C. Scott as Bert.

The film was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards; it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of pool. A real pool hustler was inspired to adopt the name of Gleason's character, Minnesota Fats, and to use the association with the film in his search for celebrity."

Even though the pool hall and the industry in general has evolved into a more benevolent sport, the raw basics of the game are timeless. The Hustler shows us the skill and the dedication to the game of billiards in a wonderful, but harsh story.

The Color of Money, the sequel to The Hustler, brings the sport into the 80's, making it more contemporary, but still not without the dark side. Paul Newman won his only Academy Award for his portrayl of Fast Eddie Felson in The Color of Money. The Color of Money brought a new popularity to the sport of billiards, and many famous pool players had cameo appearances in the film as well as served as technical advisors amd consultants.

So in closing, we thank Paul Newman for showing the world about pool and billiards. Without these two magnificent films, the wonderful sport of billiards would not have gained the acceptance that it has. It is truly a sport for all.
