A quick run down of the past doings before I run off to give the blood bank some plasma. Rob was on call all last week, and got heaps of calls and work, and we didnapos;t get much sleep. Friday came around, and he was released from durance vile, and Steveg came round and we had a game of Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Well. As if to make up for his rotten week Rob sauntered jauntily through the game, and about the worst thing that happened to him was that he got only 1 story point instead of 2 and didnapos;t get a trip to a magical realm of his choice.

Saturday we drove to Wangara with Mum and finalised our new carports/patio that weapos;re getting done. Itapos;s done with insulated Colourbond, so should be more pleasant than our side patio which gets damn hot. The new work is on the west facing side of the house and should cut out a whole heap of heat in summer, and be pleasant to bbq under as the weather warms up. Itapos;s going to be in Surfmist (off white) and Deep Ocean (Darkish Blue) for the gutters and downpipes.

Then we had a quick visit to Mondoapos;s where we grabbed dessert for Possapos;s and came home to have lunch and flake out a bit. At Possapos;s we enjoyed watching The Raven with Karloff and Lugosi and MI. We should have the Rifftraxed Reign of Fire for next week.

Rob and I are going to Sydney on the 19th for a week. This means we miss out on Wastelands II Age of Iron to our great disappointment. *sniff* Maybe we can webcam in.

On Sunday we went for a little ride to the bike shop to drop off Robapos;s red beast to have new chain rings fitted. How did he get back, you might ask? We put the trailer on and loaded up the folder. When we got there, unloaded and unfolded and voilaapos;.

Weapos;ve been honoured with an invitation to the Navratri festival at the Annalakshmi tonight, it should be very interesting. Itapos;s a Hindu festival of 9 days plus one, in which each 3 days is dedicated to a different female divinity, itapos;s in wikipedia if youapos;re interested.

Normally autumn, with its launch of the television season here in the US, is one of my favorite times of the year. I devour the Entertainment Weekly guide to fall TV, reading it to tatters, then carefully plot out what Im going to watch, and how, since our Tivo can record two shows at a time. This year, however, was different. Perhaps the quality of shows took too big of a hit with the writers strike earlier this year. Perhaps Ive simply reached my allowable tolerance for only-OK television. In any case, my interest is failing fast.
I canceled the season pass for Dirty Sexy Money before the season even began. Ive dropped Heroes and Sarah Connor: Terminator. Im waiting to hear how the Mentalist is; the premiere was good, Simon Baker is very good, but Im tired of watching shows that are only OK except for one thing: Life for Damian Lewis, Bones for the witty banter, the overcrowded House for what Hugh Laurie is going to do or say next. When I look at my Tivo to-do list, I find only a few shows that I consider A-list: Mad Men, Project Runway, the Office, and 30 Rock. Id add How I Met Your Mother, only its wildly uneven, and last nights was really lame.
Im highly dependent on, and grateful for, the tv critiques of Alan Sepinwall. He likes the good stuff, and is intolerant of the mediocre and bad stuff.

On Thursday we reported that the director of the sequels was rallying support for a novel way to tackle piracy, by encouraging fans to upload fakes to BitTorrent. The director, Darren Bousman, who admits to not being particularly Internet tech-savvy, was doing his best to protect the soundtrack of his upcoming movie, Repo! The Genetic Opera, from Internet piracy.


The report caused quite a stir, with dedicated Repo! fans, known as the Repo Army, angry at BitTorrent users for their soundtrack (more about why this is so important to them later) and BitTorrent users angry at the Repo! fans for trying to mess up their torrent sites with fakes.


Director Darren Bousman has since told his fans to leave BitTorrent alone, and there even some torrent users having friendly chats on the Repo! forums now. To see things from the other side, we caught up with Darren to find out exactly why this soundtrack is so important to the Repo! fans.


TF: Please introduce yourself to the TorrentFreak readers.


dlb: Most of you know me from the SAW films. But long before SAW I was directing this little stage play called Repo! The Genetic Opera. It was the first thing I ever read that spoke to me. I have been fighting to get it made [as a movie] ever since. Its been a long long road - and only now, after the success of three SAW films am I able to get Repo! off the ground.


TF: What makes it so different to your previous work?


dlb: Repo! to me was about doing something completely different. I had directed three sequels. I am proud of the SAW films, but I wanted to do something unique. Repo! is that. A lot of people will hate Repo!, a lot will love it. I will admit its polarizing. But I wouldnt have it any other way. Repo! is so different than SAW in every single aspect. I hope people give it a chance, and dont prejudge it because of certain cast members they may dislike, or on the mere fact people in it.


TF: Youve gone on record saying that you feel very protective of the movie, as if watching over a childs first day at school, and thats understandable. The actual movie comes out on November 7th, however, you asked the fans to concentrate on the soundtrack instead. Could you explain why this soundtrack is so crucial to you, your fans and the upcoming movie?


dlb: I am not some muti-millionaire - and sales of this album will affect me personally. I have been begging and pleading to get this movie made since 2001. I have fought, burned bridges, sacrificed relationships, and even ended relationships all based on Repo! Why? Because I believe in the project so much. I put all my resources into making this movie. However though the entire course of making it - I was told IT WOULDNT work, that there wasnt an audience for this and I have been met with constant opposition. At one point there was talk of not even releasing a soundtrack. I fought, screamed and fought some more to get this small release we have - on Amazon, iTunes and other downloadable sites. This was a way to gauge the interest in the film. I did this to show all the nay-sayers LOOK at our numbers. Look at the reactions.


TF: You told Alternative Film Guide that Repo! was so weird, out of the box, and avant garde that people didnt know what to make of it. It sounds like getting people outside the mainstream familiar with the movie might be a challenge. How would you feel if thousands downloaded this soundtrack for free via BitTorrent but a proportion of those loved it and turned up at the theater as a paying customer?


DB: I wish it worked like this but for this film it doesnt. Thats why I had the reaction I did when I heard it was being downloaded for free. The release of Repo! is only in 6 theaters. SIX THEATERS. Even if I sold out EVERY single show - in every single city - for the entire run, it still wouldnt make the money it needs to make. Sales of the soundtrack are the only way to prove if this film registered with fans. Our hope was - the sales would be so good on the soundtrack - we would get more theaters. More screens, more showing. Repo! will not be in the majority of cities, or countries. Its only in three cities. THREE CITIES. This album was our way of showing those in charge there is an audience for this.


TF: Could you tell us about your hugely dedicated fans, the Repo! Army ?


dlb: These are the greatest fans I have ever come across - the most loyal people I think I will ever meet. These people werent hired by me. They found Repo! A good portion of the Repo! Army has seen the movie through various festivals. And the movie spoke to them. Since I dont have the support of most movies - I turn to them to help spread the word. I never realized how passionate they were until recently when they turned out in droves to Austin Texas to see a screening of Repo! They are as passionate about Repo! as your users are about file sharing.


TF: Of course, BitTorrent fans can spread the word for you too. An interesting group have been vocal in emails to TorrentFreak - the Repo! fans who are also BitTorrent users. Are you surprised that some of your fans in the Repo Army are buying your material with a passion, yet appear to be using BitTorrent too?


dlb: No, not at all. I am sure tons of people use these sites. The sad fact with Repo! is that every person who purchases the album for $9.99 is making a big statement. And these statements are going to be be the difference between Repo! playing in six theaters, or seven. To the mass population this will seem trivial - but for us, who have very little support or marketing. One paid download is huge.


TF: Thanks for speaking with us Darren, and we wish you well with the movie.


The brief storm that blew up between the opposing groups has largely died down now, after being dampened by Darrens request to his fans to stop actions against torrents. After much correspondence with Darren it seems clear to us that he never really intended to hurt BitTorrent, but acted passionately in his role as the protective father of the movie, not as some greedy corporate fat cat.


Darren told TorrentFreak that he was sorry that his actions offended some BitTorrent users, adding Just understand, we are not the studio system. We are not the major corporation. We are a group of people who have been fighting to get something made only to see it released in just 6 theaters.s not hard to see why this movie and its soundtrack has raised such passions, when years of planning, investment and dreams rest on the success of such a small release window. However, in the absence of a huge marketing investment by Lions Gate, the movie will live or die by word of mouth and magnitude of Internet .


Big named movies and albums gain less from the publicity offered by piracy than smaller productions desperate for exposure, so at least on the surface, Repo! seems an ideal candidate to benefit. It will be interesting to see how much success this movie gets, and if the piracy situation mirrors that. Hopefully, if the Repo! soundtrack does get downloaded a lot - and loved - those six theaters will be full and extended to more, which cant fail to boost Januarys DVD release.


Of course, when you rely on companies like Lions Gate to get even 6 theaters, admitting that piracy might help isnt going to go down too well.

The abandonment wound, stored deep within the limbic brain, is easily triggered. You feel its raw nerve twinge when you fail to get recognition at work, a friend forgets to invite you to a party, or a date you thought was special did not call back. When being left is the trigger, core abandonment fears erupt. Stress hormones course through our bodies, compelling even the strongest among us to feel desperate and dependent. However self-sufficient we think we are, we suddenly feel we cant live without him/her.
Being left also kicks up our control issues. The breakup wasn't our choice. Someone else cast us into this aloneness by choosing not to be with us. We feel at loss of our personal power to compel another person's love. "I must be unlovable and unworthy for him to discard me like that." Abandonment is similar to other types of bereavement, but its grief is complicated by rejection and betrayal. We turn the rage against ourselves, accounting for the severe depression that accompanies heartbreak. When we blame the breakup on our supposed inadequacies, we abandon ourselves. We automatically think to ourselves, There must be something wrong with me that makes me not worth keeping.
We emerge not only disconnected from self-love, but with a heightened fear of abandonment. If one person can discard us, we fear others will do the same to us in the future. Rather than dissipate, this fear tends to incubate. Its insecurity burrows deep within us where it sabotages our relationships. The fear of being left makes it more difficult to let go. The rejection creates nagging conflict; closure remains incomplete. We feel unjustly dismissed and we long for an opportunity to vindicate the hurt. We are left alone to grapple with the broken pieces. Mixed with our rage is a desire for our ex to come back to take away the hurt and rejection.
The paradox of abandonment is the tendency to idealize the abandoner. He or she emerges in our imaginations as a powerful figure. We assume she must be very special to have caused this much torment simply by being absent. The intense craving is confusing to our limbic brain. Stress hormones course through our bodies, causing a heightened response to anything related to our ex for a long time. An important thing to understand is there are five universal stages that accompany the loss of love: Shattering, Withdrawal, Internalizing, Rage, and Lifting. As we make our way through these stages of grief and recovery, we build self-esteem, resolve fear and self-doubt and restore the spirit.
The Five Stages of Abandonment are: 1. Shattering: Severing of love-connection, devastation, shattering of hopes and dreams. The emotions are shock, panic, despair, feeling you can't live without your love. 2. Withdrawal: You're in painful withdrawal of love-loss, as intense as heroin withdrawal. The emotions are yearning, craving, obsessing, longing for your ex's return. 3. Internalizing: As you try to making sense of the rejection, you doubt and blame yourself. Idealizing the abandoner at your own expense, narcissistic injury sets in and fear incubates. 4. Rage: Reversing the rejection and having retaliatory feelings. Displacing anger on friends who don't understand or are critical of the abandoner leads to more unhealthy action. 5. Lifting: Rising out despair, life begins to distract you. You begin to open to love again and all its possibilities. You through all the stages over and over until you emerge out the end of the tunnel a changed person capable of greater life and love than before.

There are pictures up on my myspace that I like and I had to take the picture six million times in different ways and lightings and places for me to find one I liked. Iapos;m picky. So sue me.

And I asked Ha-chan while he was on the computer once on myspace even so I knew it wasnapos;t out of his way. "Could you please remove the pictures?" And he gave me this wierd sideways glance and said nothing. Then when I got back home I found that the pictures were still there. So I got frustrated, and I think rightfully so.

So I just commented the pictures. Saying stuff like "ew" and "fugly" and it did kinda make me laugh so I canapos;t say the experience was completely negative.

And so I think it was Kumori saying for me to stop being negative and go play guitar.

Apparently that meant if I had so much time to negatively comment pictures I might as well do something worthwhile, which in their eyes is band practice because I donapos;t have a life and donapos;t do anything anyways. [/run on sentence]

(Is being humourous there not trying to be mean. But then again who believes me anyways? lol)

So we got in a dispute and then apparently it was all my fault how some people they were messaging never messaged back.

For one I was like. Thanks for telling me the activities of our band. I like how Iapos;m always last to know things... And two, thanks for the guilt trip of hell. But I was like.. Wait. Why do I have to feel guilty? I did ask them several times to remove the pictures, it wasnapos;t hard. I mean weapos;re not going to die tomorrow, more pictures could be taken. (Hopefully with me approving of them)

So then last month I walk into their house and Kumori is on the computer. On myspace. So I say, "Since youapos;re on myspace could you delete the pictures?" And she says ok. And I come home and find they are still there.

I just have one question.

In an ugly act of racial and political intimidation, four supporters sympathetic to John McCain who are students at the the small Christian George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, confessed to hanging a life-sized Obama effigy from a tree at the entrance of the college with the words, "Act 6 Reject" scrawled on the figure. The Act 6 program is a minority scholarship program.
The goal of those that hung the life-sized cardboard figure of Barack Obama in effigy seemed pretty clearly aimed at both intimidating any supporters of Barack Obama and also making any minority students feel unwelcome and unsafe at the college. It was like posting a death threat to any Obama supporters or to any minorities that they are not welcome at the Christian college and should leave for their safety. It is closely related to terrorism in attempting to incite fear to control others.
Administrators were outraged at this disgusting display of racial and political intimidation and held an event at the school's chapel to address this outrageous hate act. And the FBI is actively investigating the act of racial prejudice and may file federal charges against the four students who are currently under suspension from the school.
So far the McCain-Palin Campaign has been silent on this hate crime act. But both McCain and Palin are on record as opposing hate crimes laws at both state and federal levels. Both have a clear of record of weakness when it comes to support for prosecuting those who use racial intimidation or death threats against minorities. It seems highly unlikely that anyone from the McCain Campaign will offer any statement condemning this hate crime.
The John McCain record is so poor on minority issues that only a mere 36 African American delegates were at the Republican National Convention this year. One of the lowest numbers in years. Many minorities recognize that John McCain is no friend to their shared values of justice, equality or law enforcement against hate crimes. John McCain's right wing economics continue to keep many minorities in economic slavery as well and have diminished their standard of living.
John McCain has continued to compare himself to Barry Goldwater over the years. However, during the 1964 campaign it was Barry Goldwater's vice presidential candidate, Arthur Miller who accepted the support of the Ku Klux Klan during the campaign, creating an embarrassing situation for Goldwater that year which was just another factor in his landslide loss that year.
With his opposition to the Martin Luther King Holiday, civil rights legislation and hate crimes laws, John McCain has one of the worst records of any GOP candidate for president in many years on combating racism in America. It is hard to imagine that such a candidate is running in the party of Abraham Lincoln who was so devoted to racial justice for all Americans. And the racist incident at George Fox university is just an ugly reminder of the shallow reason that a few supporters are drawn to John McCain.
But one major Oregon Republican seems to have stepped up to make a strong statement perhaps inspired by this hate crime. Republican Senator Gordon Smith has begun airing new ads last week that show his bipartisan support with Senator Edward Kennedy for supporting increased penalties for hate crimes. Senator Smith represents the broad number of decent Republicans who reject hate crimes, racial violence or using racist effigy figures to intimidate minorities or Obama supporters.
While some supporters of John McCain such as the racists who hung the Obama effigy may want to make this election a referendum on race, the Obama Campaign has always taken the high road in this campaign, making this election about the economy, character and issues. That's where most Americans are and will be on election day as well.

Last week, I suffered from having personal-life stuff leaving me in no mood to blog when I needed to, and not a great deal to discuss, either. This week, the list of potential talking points is as long as your arm, and I simply can't do the meat of this book justice.

First of note is that Dorothy L. Sayers completes her masterly misdirection and reveals Miss Ann Dorland to be quite a sympathetic character. She's certainly stupid, and Sayers doesn't mince words about her poor choices, but it's incredibly interesting to see Lord Peter Wimsey insist that there must be more to her than the grouchy, uncooperative jerk who consented to be interviewed by Inspector Parker and be proven right. So she done it all for love, as they say. I am intrigued by the slow revelations that Miss Dorland is completely unsuited to the hedonistic lifestyle of all the pretty young things of the artistic community. LPW quickly dismisses her painting as poor and amateurish, and she deluded herself that her relationship with Dr. Penberthy was an engagement. There are some very interesting suggestions about her sexual appetite being a "mania," but one thing seems certain: she's not capable of going to bed with a man and subsequently thinking that it's more than sex. This is the wrong crowd for her.

But Dr. Penberthy is the real murderer, and Miss Dorland merely an unwitting accomplice. I can't stress this part enough: while by this point, Sayers had completed three novels and a handful of short stories, all of them remarkably entertaining in one way or another, she really elevated herself to one of the greats with the climax of this book. It's bloodchilling. The dispassionate way that LPW and Penberthy discuss the only way out which will exonerate Miss Dorland just left me white. The television adaptation is pretty amazing as well, in its creepy silence and cold stares, but the restrictions of time made it impossible to do it justice, so they changed the pacing. In the novel, Penberthy is given half an hour to write his confession and clear his thoughts while LPW and Col. Marchbanks discuss the unpleasantness, and then, when Marchbanks produces a revolver, which, beautifully, is never actually identified as a revolver, merely "the thing," and leaves it within reach of Penberthy, it comes as a release after the buildup of the tension. On TV, LPW and Marchbanks had already discussed this offscreen and Penberthy not given a half hour, and so the handover of the gun really only starts the tension, which is increased while the duo retire to the club's bar for a drink and await the shot. There are only the most minimal changes in what actually happens, but the way the event is staged makes it a very different experience.

I was struck by another change as well. In the first episode, I wondered whether LPW's strange generosity with money might have been a conscious decision to soften the character for TV, and make him more palatable to a post-World War Two audience. Well, when LPW is called by Sheila Fentiman in the middle of the night in a panic after George's latest disappearance, something similar occurs to me. Now, in the novel, LPW briefly gets rid of the Fentimans' landlord, Mr. Munns, by asking him to get the fellow at the nearby pub to let him have an after-hours bottle of whiskey. In the TV version, he has Munns ring up Bunter instead to bring a bottle. This places Bunter at the Fentimans' flat when Mr. Munns tells this ghoulish anecdote about a neighbor who also suffered from shellshock and blackouts and murdered his family. As inappropriate anecdotes go, this really takes some topping. Naturally, in the novel, LPW coldly and firmly tells him to shut his idiot mouth. But the television Wimsey is an altogether nicer and cheerier sort of fellow, and Ian Carmichael delivers dialogue which is often very accurate, but with a little more sunshine than those lines might otherwise be read. So it falls to Bunter to savagely tell Munns to drop it.

There's a lot more to be said, including Sayers name-checking and tipping her hat at length to her predecessor in detective fiction, Austin Freeman, but that will do for now. It's a fantastic book, go and read it, and be here next time when we spend a couple of weeks on the last two of the original dozen short stories.

2. Teeing Off In Your Mind
Next after your grip comes teeing off. Here is where focus comes into play. Ever noticed during golf tournaments how focused the players seem to be? They have learned to block out every distraction, including the crowd, and concentrate exactly where they want the ball to fly to. The best way to do this is take a few seconds before you hit the ball and mentally see the ball go where you desire. I like to call it a motion picture in my head of what I really want. This technique is more powerful than you can imagine, take the time to use it.
3. Backswing and Downswing Fundamentals
There seems to be a lot of confusion for players concerning an understanding of backswing and downswing. Simply put the downswing is designed to create club momentum at the ball. This is accomplished with your arms swinging in one full motion. Resist the desire to do this with your hands or wrists.
The concept of the backswing has different mechanics than the downswing. The backswing should be slower than the downswing but just as powerful. Always keep in mind your downswing should be 25 to 35% faster than your backswing. Once again this is brought out in practicing your swing.
4. Its All In The Motion
During the backswings motion your left shoulder and hips need to be in correct alignment as your weight is transfered to the right. Of course for left handers this is exactly the opposite. Practicing this will eventually make this a natural movement for you. Also remember to place your hands at waist level for proper execution of this move.
Remember learning golf swing basics from the start is how to enjoy this wonderful sport for years to come. With proper techniques and practice comes having better golf games played by yourself and with friends. Isnt that one of the best reasons to learn to play right from the beginning.

Most of you now know, Kentucky is in the middle of seizing online poker and online gambling domains from many of the top companies in the gaming industry. It all started on Tuesday Septenber 23rd, when it was releasted that a court in Kentucky ordered the seizure of 141 poker and gambling domain names (list below).
Since then, a couple of smaller casinos have handed over their domains in fear of prosecution. Golden Casino handed over their domain, and Playshare emailed their affiliates warning that they might have to change their domain. ClubUSACasino also changed their domain.
I spoke to a couple of employees from the bigger sites on the list, their overall feel was if a state court can ever get a multinational company to give up their domain, then hell must have frozen over. I complete agree with this statement.
Today Kentucky announced that they were asking for these sites to shut down access to Kentucky users, not to shut down the sites all together. Why the hell try to take the domains then? Its sad that its so easy to see through their bullshit, yet they get away with it. Two words sum up the reasoning for all of thisKentucky Derby.
Our endgame is to block access within Kentucky, Jennifer Brislin said. But our mode to do that is to capture those domain names and, if need be if thats not an option that those users take then we will at the end of the day shut down a site.

Last night I went to a Stake training meeting. Even though getting out the door to go to one more meeting is becoming a drudgery, once I'm there I'm glad I've gone and learn something worthwhile.

After the meeting was over I had this conversation with President Payne:

President Payne shaking my hand: "Make sure and tell Joey thank you for babysitting."
Me thinking: Why would Joey babysit for the Paynes?
Me: "Babysit? When did Joey babysit?"
President Payne: "You know, tonight so that you could come to our meeting."

Ah ha! I get it. When I'm home alone with the kids I'm parenting, mothering if you will. When Joey is home alone with the kids he is babysitting and there for deserves to be praised. I didn't hear him tell Jerry to go home and thank Jenn. Very interesting. It might work that way in some homes, but thankfully not in mine.

Joey is wonderful about keeping the kids. It doesn't matter if I go out with the girls several weekends in a row or if my calling takes me away from home more often than I'd like. Joey has NEVER complained about keeping the kids. I am so thankful for his support in anything I want to do. Hopefully I express that appreciation enough to him. I love the fact that he does it because he loves to be with the kids and not just because he knows I need a break. Often times he has plans to hang out with a friend and before I know it he loads all the kids up to go with him. What a blessing it is to see my husband (who never wanted to have kids) enjoy our family.

Golf swing basics are the fundamental steps to enjoying this ever expanding sport. Here are 4 areas where amateur and professional golfers should be learning from.
1. Club Handle Grip
Your grip determines greatly how the ball will fly for you. A light grip can, under most circumstances, slice your shot. Where to tight of a grip almost always hooks your shot. Finding middle ground on this will take some practice but when you find this sweet spot you will remember it from then on.
2. Teeing Off In Your Mind
Next after your grip comes teeing off. Here is where focus comes into play. Ever noticed during golf tournaments how focused the players seem to be? They have learned to block out every distraction, including the crowd, and concentrate exactly where they want the ball to fly to. The best way to do this is take a few seconds before you hit the ball and mentally see the ball go where you desire. I like to call it a motion picture in my head of what I really want. This technique is more powerful than you can imagine, take the time to use it.
3. Backswing and Downswing Fundamentals
There seems to be a lot of confusion for players concerning an understanding of backswing and downswing. Simply put the downswing is designed to create club momentum at the ball. This is accomplished with your arms swinging in one full motion. Resist the desire to do this with your hands or wrists.
The concept of the backswing has different mechanics than the downswing. The backswing should be slower than the downswing but just as powerful. Always keep in mind your downswing should be 25 to 35% faster than your backswing. Once again this is brought out in practicing your swing.
4. Its All In The Motion
During the backswings motion your left shoulder and hips need to be in correct alignment as your weight is transfered to the right. Of course for left handers this is exactly the opposite. Practicing this will eventually make this a natural movement for you. Also remember to place your hands at waist level for proper execution of this move.
Remember learning golf swing basics from the start is how to enjoy this wonderful sport for years to come. With proper techniques and practice comes having better golf games played by yourself and with friends. Isnt that one of the best reasons to learn to play right from the beginning.

There are some treatment programs also for the addicted gamblers. The therapies and medication are supposed to be the most successful way to be cured from this addiction. Counseling with various support groups can also help to remove this type of addiction. But above everything for successful result in this treatment firstly it is required that the addicted person has to admit that he or she is facing restlessness with such type of activity and is feeling to give it up as soon as possible, unless and until the recovery process will not go make any further step.

There was a time, many moons ago where I took little interest in gambling, casinos, or anything related. Then, almost out of the blue, the popularity of Texas Hold'em exploded thanks to television and within months everyone was playing the game. It was then that my buddy suggested card counting, "the ultimate way to bring down the casino" he claimed. Needless to say, card counting grew tiresome and the edge it gave was so minimal I would still lose quite often since I didn't have a big bankroll like card counting requires. Soon enough, I stopped counting cards all together and just focused on basic strategy. By this point I was already playing in the casinos every couple of day and my addiction to gambling had just begun. I started out winning unusually often which made me think that I was invincible. Within a few more weeks every couple of days turned into everyday and the dealers started getting to know me which was very embarrassing for me. My gambling addiction had gone to full throttle.

The DoF selects the coach. The coach has to be compatible with the DoF. The DoF buys the players (Kaboul, KPB for example) rather than the coaches choice in players (Petrov, for example). And when it turns to shit, the coach is the scape-goat.

But with one failure following another, this is now far too transparent (if it wasn't before to the most blind of fans).

Will Levy admit defeat? Of course not. If Ramos goes, then another willing 'coach' will arrive and the same cycle of disfunction will begin. Much like the snake swallowing its own tail, at some point soon, there be nothing left.

Itapos;s taken me almost one year, but I"m at the halfway point of Eclipse.

It shouldnapos;t have taken me this entire year to get here, but I suffered a setback I wasnapos;t counting on. It wasnapos;t a loss of interest, but it was a definate feeling that something really important was missing. I could still tell the story, and I did, but I couldnapos;t shake the feeling that this was going to be a flop unless I figured it out.

Last week I figured it out.

Villains...true villians cannot just be "Oooh, Iapos;m evil. Iapos;m scary. Bow down to me or I will destroy you." They need a backstory. (This wasnapos;t an epiphany I had never considered before, it was simply something I came to the realization that I hadnapos;t done yet) In Morning Star, the villains have little development, because it was SUPPOSED to be that way. They took backseat to the struggles of my hero trying to figure out what was going on in the chaos around him. Now that theyapos;re taking center stage in the second installment, I had to do sometihg to bring them from Point A where they were normal people, to point B where they were bent on bloodlust. One of the things I love the most about shows like Eureka, and Battlestar Galactia are that the villains are usually a breath away from being heroes themselves...the problem lies in the execution of their plans...how they go about bringing the order they perceive to be perfection into being.

Iapos;ve done that. By going back in each chapter and giving just ONE of the five remaining villains a backstory, Iapos;ve created a sense of wonder even in myself. How did she go from being a loving mother who simply wanted to create an unending power supply to save her people from extinction, to the bloodthirsty murderer Iapos;ve presented in Book 2? It was something I never considered doing for this character, or for this series, at least...this early on. There were plans to describe the whole backstory of the villains later on, but this is so much better, so much more beautiful.

And my excitement, my need to get this story out on paper has returned. In fact, Iapos;m pissed off that I canapos;t write tomorrow I might even start using my prep period to write again, like I did towards the end of Morning Star.

Eclipse...you might just be my favorite.

Some men in the crowd were talking on their cell phones, giving their friends a play-by-play of the action.

Reyes won the sixth and seventh games, to go ahead by one. Then Byrd won the next four games. Reyes was sitting on a chair against the wall. He didn't get up for the next game. One of the fans said into his cell phone, "Efren's in a trap." Finally Reyes shook his head no. He quit. A small man stepped out of the crowd and said to Byrd, "Play Efren nine-four."

Byrd shook his head. The crowd muttered, and some called out, "Play him nine-four!" But Byrd refused to reduce his advantage.

Finally Byrd turned and pointed at the burly man in the Phillies cap. "Let Efren play Cliff," he said. "I'll put up five dimes [$5,000] on Cliff if Efren plays him eight-seven."

All eyes turned toward Reyes, sitting on his chair. He stood and said, "I play."

The crowd erupted, people yelling into their cell phones, "Efren's playing Cliff for five dimes!" Men started shouting: "I'll take five nickels [$500] of that action." "I'll take a dime." Dozens of men waved fistfuls of bills at the small man from the crowd. He collected the billsmaybe $20,000 in side betsand wrote names on a piece of paper. Meanwhile, Spanish Mike produced a wad of bills. He counted out $5,000 and handed it to the small man. Byrd did the same. The game was set: $5,000, winner take all. Reyes would have to pocket eight balls a rack to win, and Cliff only seven. The first man to win eight games would win the $5,000.

The first game began with an audience of more than 400 fans, all sitting on one side of the room. The series lasted six hours, full of unbelievable tension and skill. The spectators were witness to the game of a lifetime, between two men who, though rated the top two one-pocket players in the world, had rarely played each other.

I would be willing to guess that of every five emails I receive these days, probably two or three of them always pose the same question: Why is Jerimy Finch not starting at safety for the Hoosiers?

I have no reason to defend my opinions at the beginning of the year because he has proven he's a playmaker. ... Here's my take on it. I have to tell you that at first I was in the same camp with most of you out there that Finch was too good not to have on the field. I understood that IU had two good safeties that they really liked in Austin Thomas and Nick Polk and because of that Finch was going to be brought around slowly. Then came the Michigan State game where Thomas and Polk were both out, and IU went with Joe Kleinsmith and Brandon Mosley as the two safeties.
The company line I had been hearing over and over was that Finch was a player who had played safety in high school, then didn't play safety all of last year as he was converted to linebacker at Florida. Then he missed the spring and showed up in the summer and had to learn a new system and it wasn't coming real easy to him. And so IU was trying to be patient and wait for Finch to feel comfortable out there before throwing him to the wolves.
Now again, this was the company line that we were being fed. It did seem to make sense at some level and at another level, I have to think that returning to the safety spot for Finch would be something he could pick up rather quickly. And three games into the season plus a bye week (heading into the Michigan State game) you would think would be enough time for Finch to be raring to go.
I don't know about anyone else but I have to admit that my opinion was altered a little bit on Saturday. I'm not sure it's fair to change an opinion based on a couple of plays but there were two plays in particular in that game that caused me to shake my head. The most obvious one was the 82 yard touchdown pass over the middle to the tight end that Finch gambled on, went for the interception, and got burned which resulted in the long TD play that really broke IU's back at that point. What was Finch thinking there? He was a step or two behind and then made kind of lunging attempt at the ball but it seemed as if he really didn't have much of a chance at it. And if you're beat in that situation, then trip the guy up or tackle him or something. Take the 15-yard penalty. The worst that would have happened would have been that Michigan State gets the ball at midfield with 90 seconds to play in the first half and IU trailing 20-16. Instead, Hoyer completes the long TD play to Charlie Gantt and it's 27-16. Marcus Thigpen comes back a few seconds later with the 78 yard TD run to get the Hoosiers back in the game, but think of what could have happened had Finch not given up the score.
The other play was just a few minutes before that one. Finch comes through and gets his second blocked punt in as many weeks. Great play, very athletic and just what Indiana needed. But if you look at the replay after he blocked the punt, Finch began to celebrate. His teammates were headed for the end zone to try and cover the ball for a touchdown. Instead, the punter got in there and somehow recovered the ball for a safety. Perhaps it's just a natural reaction to celebrate in that situation, but I would rather see Finch going after the ball and trying to get the Hoosiers in the end zone. The score was 20-14 Michigan State at the time, so a touchdown would have potentially put IU ahead and at the very least tied at 20.
The first play in particular makes me question whether he's ready to play safety at this level. It was only one gamble but a big one. It was like diving for the shoe string catch in the outfield and letting the ball roll to the fence for an inside-the-park home run. It's a big gamble with high risk implications. Perhaps it was just a young mistake but IU has enough players making mistakes out there that if the Hoosiers are going to go with a guy they think can be that good then he needs to step in and be everything as advertised. That's just my take there.
This may all be a moot point for now anyway pending the injury update that we'll get at 1 p.m. today at Bill Lynch's weekly press conference. Finch suffered a lower leg injury in the Michigan State game and didn't play the final two quarters. He was on the sidelines wearing a precautionary boot and was on crutches at the end of the game. That doesn't necessarily mean it's serious though. IU's trainers often do that just so as to not take any chances. My guess is he'll be questionable this week and they'll be hoping to get him some repetitions late in the week in practice.
So what do you think? If he's healthy, should Finch be in the starting lineup Saturday at Minnesota? Or did his play on Saturday raise a red flag for you as well?

Following his team's 24-21 to Eastern Michigan, Gregg Brandon naturally wasn't in much of a talkative mood. Today, however, he was back to his normal self discussing issues from Saturday's game as well as looking ahead to Akron this coming weekend.

--While Brandon was talkative as usual, you could still tell that the loss was bothering him. As we can all agree, you just can't lose to EMU this year. They're awful.

--Every Monday after we interview with coach, we talk to players we requested so we can write our various stories and such throughout the week. Today, for the first time since we've been covering football for this newspaper, no players were made available. The reasoning was "The kids have midterms and need the shortened week to study." This reason is B.S. Over half of the classes at this university don't even have midterms, and many of the ones that do will schedule them for the week AFTER Fall Break. And the football team has no shortened week, because they aren't gong anywhere for Fall Break. They've got to travel to Akron on Friday or Saturday. To top it all off, we got a bit of a chuckle in when we saw three players casually walking through the Sebo Center during the time where they were supposed to be hard at work studying for all these midterms. Personally, we would've just preferred a direct statement like "since we lost Saturday, we'd rather not have the players talk more about it to the press." In the grand scheme of things, missing out on the two player interviews we scheduled isn't a big deal, as we've only got three issues this week. Coach and the SIDs are always nice and accommodating. We're not mad about it. We just thought the excuse was incredibly lame.

--Brandon addressed one of the main issues from the loss as being untimely errors and penalties. As a veteran team, these mistakes shouldn't be happening, and it is something that needs to be fixed. "Every game we play the rest of the way is going to be like that one," Brandon said to his team following the loss. "They're going to tough, physical games that may come down to a play or two at the end of the game.

--Antonio Smith was called for interference on a punt, which was a very questionable call by the officials. Brandon believes that the ball should have been BG's ball at the spot where Smith recovered the punt.

--Because BG was picked to win the MAC East before the season, every single MAC tam wants to beat the Falcons. Given that fact, the Falcons need to be mentally ready for every game whether it's against a ranked team or a MAC opponent. "We have to show up with same intensity that if we're playing Pitt or Boise or whoever in this league," Brandon said.

--The injury report looks good for the Falcons. Willie Geter has a strained ligament in his knee which kept him out of the Eastern game. Otherwise, there is just the same small nicks among players like Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes.

--Akron has a unique defense that no one else in the league runs. The defense has been used for years and BG has seen it before. Brandon was also sure to mention Bryan Williams, Akron's kick returner is towards the top of the nation in kick returning. The Falcons also need to get at Chris Jacquemain, who has seen vast improvement this season which means BG needs to show many different defensive schemes to get him guessing.

--A big question after the game is should Brandon have let Tyler Sheehan throw a hail mary pass? Brandon's answer to that: "I thought about it. I didn't say it to anybody," Brandon said. "I thought Sinisa [Vrvilo} could make the kick. He's made 50 plus yarders before." Brandon was also sure to make sure that it is known that the missed field goal is not the sole reason the team lost the game.
