EBAY! well I started going on ebay when a friend recommended it as a great auction site to me. I went on there and never realised just how many different things you could bid for, they do everything.
The buzz I got was amazing when I placed my first bid and then recieved an email to confirm that I had successfully placed the highest bid and that the item in question was mine.
Well after that I went on ebay every day, scanning through the endless lists of things to sell. I started placing bids on many items, even to the point that when I won the bids I couldnt remember the items in question, thats how bad I got!.

WASHINGTON TWP. -- Julius Caesar Caldara of Long Valley died on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008. He was 97.

He was born June 13, 1911, in Astoria, Queens, N.Y. As a boy, he moved to Lincoln Park, N.J., with his sister and six brothers. Julius' father, Carlo, was a descendent of the 17th-century composer, Antonio Caldara. His mother, Theresa, was a descendent of the violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini.

This noble heritage manifested in Julius through a flair for musical comedy. Although he lived in poverty, the brothers sharing one pair of shoes among them, Julius taught himself to play banjo, ukulele, guitar and the piano. He often found employment on the vaudeville circuit, and later, in England, he shared the bill with Ozzie and Harriet.

Julius left Boonton High School in his sophomore year to earn a regular paycheck for the family. He commuted by steam train to New York City to wait tables in his father's restaurant. He also worked in a perfume factory and as a runner on Wall Street.

Always very athletic, "Julie" and his siblings relished ice skating on the Morris Canal and swimming in the Passaic River. While his sister toured with a semi-professional women's basketball team, Julie and his brothers earned money playing baseball.

Starting as a ball boy for the Lincoln Park Pros, Julie was a full-fledged heavy semi-pro baseball player by the age of 15. A graceful figure on the field, Julie threw and hit baseballs with unerring aim. He played shortstop for the Gatti All-Wags of Paterson, the Mountain View Athletic Club, the Sussex County All Star League, and Malapardis of Jefferson, among others. In his late 20s, the Triple A League of the New York Yankees farm team hired him. But shortly afterward, he was drafted into the Army.

Julius joined the 325th Glider Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division and was promoted to the rank of 1st lieutenant in the Anti-Tank 3rd Battalion. He landed in Normandy on D-Day Plus One, June 7, 1944. He survived the invasion of Holland and the Battle of the Bulge.
After World War II, Julius honed his carpentry skills and began building houses in the Lincoln Park area. He enjoyed a 30-year partnership with his sister's husband, Frank Fackino of Whippany, N.J., as "Fackino and Caldara, Builders," their well-constructed homes graced Morris County.

Ever ready to help, Julius became an active member of the Lincoln Park Fire Department, Hose Company No. 1, in 1934. He continued in that capacity for more than a decade.
Julius married Helene Rita Maciag of Morris Plains, N.J., in 1950. Helene was vivacious and caring, with a strong set of principles. They had three children, who survive: Victoria of Long Valley, Anna Maria of Bangor, Pa., and Martina of Allamuchy.

"Pop" was an exemplary father who spent every moment with his daughters. Together they learned the joys of exploring nature, playing baseball, sleigh riding, flea marketing, reading, singing and laughing.

The children lived in a house built by their father, on land that adjoined the historic Governor Livingston estate in Parsippany. Their beautiful property was bulldozed in 1966 and became Route 80.

The family then moved to Long Valley.

Pop kept his hand in building by working for Jerry Long of Chester, N.J., in his 70s. In his early 80s, he was a greeter at Rickel in Chester. Julius finally retired at the age of 83.

In 2002, after 52 years of marriage, Helene died.

Julius retained his health and mobility in his last years. He was able to make a weekly trip to the AP in Flanders, where he enjoyed the friendliness of the employees.

Julius spent the last six months of his life at the New Jersey Firemen's Home in Boonton, where he received excellent care. The entire staff, especially the Activities Department, and the nurses and aides of Dorm C, kept him smiling.

Julius Caesar Caldara left a legacy of compassion, kindness and humor. He never debated whether to help a human or animal in need; he instantly acted to relieve further harm or suffering. Injured wildlife, stray cats and dogs, the poor and homeless, all gained from his benevolence. Regardless of the situation, Julius remained calm, gentle and self-possessed. His quick, wry wit and vaudeville jokes provoked side-splitting laughter when least expected!

Julius would appreciate kindness to an animal in his memory.

Liars Poker comes in a couple of different flavors. The first may be more comfortable as it is a tradition card game and the later is not. The game begins with each player starting with two quarters. Everyone is then dealt two cards down. The first player calls a poker hand. The next player has the option of either calling a hand which beats the previous hand or challenging the previous players call. If a person challenges the hand, then everyones cards are pooled to determine if the hand exists. If it does, the person who called the game loses one of his quarters and starts the next game, with only one card dealt to him. If it does not, the player who called the hand loses the quarter. After a player has their second quarter taken away, the player is out. Deck is reshuffled after each round. Game ends and the pooled change is awarded when only one person has a quarter left.

Editor’s Note: I’m in Houston, TX, this week, celebrating the International Year of the Planet by posting on topics covered at the first ever joint meeting between the American societies of Soil Science, Geology, Crop Science and Agronomy. According to Dr. Peter McCabe, a world-renowned scientist currently working at CSIRO in Australia, any realistic analysis of future energy sources can only conclude that, barring some complete and miraculous harmony between all the world’s economic superpowers, fossil fuels will dominate our energy mix for at least the next few decades — and we should just accept it.
To get a perspective on where Dr. McCabe is coming from, it struck me that he is a man who thinks in terms of quadrillions of BTUs and exajoules of energy. His views come from an analysis of global markets and global energy use. To him it probably seems that a grassroots coordinated global effort is beyond the reach of humanity.
Being a bit of a realistic skeptic myself, it seemed like it would be worth my while to temporarily suspend my deep held belief that not only is it possible for the U.S. and most of the rest of the world to kick its oil habit within a decade, but also a simple requirement for survival, and take Dr. McCabe at face value.

We, in the billiard industry, are especially appreciative of what he did for the sport. Even now, almost 50 years after its release, The Hustler still captures todays pool enthusiasts and holds them in its' spell. Whenever we have the film showing in our billiard hall, people still comment on what a great film it is.

It tells the story of small-time pool hustler, "Fast Eddie" Felson, and his desire to prove himself the best player in the country by beating legendary pool player "Minnesota Fats." After initially losing to Fats and getting involved with unscrupulous manager Bert Gordon, Eddie returns to beat Fats, but only after paying a terrible personal price.

The Hustler is an adaptation of the 1959 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. Sidney Carroll and Robert Rossen adapted the novel for the screen. Rossen directed the film, shot on location in New York City. It stars Paul Newman as Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, Piper Laurie as Sarah and George C. Scott as Bert.

The film was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards; it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of pool. Even though the pool hall and the industry in general has evolved into a more benevolent sport, the raw basics of the game are timeless. The Hustler shows us the skill and the dedication to the game of billiards in a wonderful, but harsh story.

The Color of Money, the sequel to The Hustler, brings the sport into the 80's, making it more contemporary, but still not without the dark side. Paul Newman won his only Academy Award for his portrayl of Fast Eddie Felson in The Color of Money. The Color of Money brought a new popularity to the sport of billiards, and many famous pool players had cameo appearances in the film as well as served as technical advisors amd consultants.

So in closing, we thank Paul Newman for showing the world about pool and billiards. Without these two magnificent films, the wonderful sport of billiards would not have gained the acceptance that it has. It is truly a sport for all.

SIMPLY MARVELOUS -- MIAMI VS. SAN DIEGO -- We've already mentioned that Miami QB Chad Pennington is a legitimate sleeper against the Chargers. Statistically, the Thunderbolts have the worst passing D in the league after 4 weeks, giving up 9 TDs and an average of 276.3 yards. Granted, that includes facing Denver but it also includes facing Oakland. NOTE: They say there's a 40 percent chance of rain in Miami.
CLOSE TO MARVELOUS -- TAMPA BAY AT DENVER -- The Broncos are next-to-last in pass D at 276 yards per game and 7 TDs to date. They also only have one interception. So Griese and his WRs (whoever they are) have a chance to do something. NOTE: A 30 percent chance of rain here.
KIND OF SUCKY -- CINCINNATI AT DALLAS -- Looks as if Carson Palmer will start at QB but will he finish? An amazing amount of WR talent is being wasted with T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Antonio Chapman and the other guy, now known as Chad Ocho Ouch. The Cowboys have a dozen sacks and the Bengals have given up a dozen, so does that mean 24 sacks this time out? But Dallas does not have a pick, which the 'Boys will focus on changing.
REALLY SUCKY -- TENNESSEE AT BALTIMORE -- If the Titans are going to lose for the first time, this is why. Ravens are No. 1 against QBs, giving up an average of just 117 yards and a total of 2 passing TDs in 3 games. Even Kerry Collins may not be able to that.
RUSHING
SIMPLY MARVELOUS -- INDIANAPOLIS AT HOUSTON -- If you have been dying with Joseph Addai anyway, you don't need extra incentive to stick with him here. But be encouraged anyway because the Texans have given up 7 rush TDs in 3 games. And the Colts should have their offensive line back, so this could be an old-fashioned Colts' offensive explosion.
CLOSE TO MARVELOUS -- CHICAGO AT DETROIT -- Again, you probably don't need me to start Matt Forte but know that the Lions are 32nd in rush D (and you do know how many teams are in the league, right?) They have allowed an average of 207.6 yards and a total of 6 TDs in 3 games. Forte has been getting the yards but only 2 TDs so far. That could change here.
KIND OF SUCKY -- PITTSBURGH AT JACKSONVILLE -- One of the toughest decisions of the week could be whether or not to play Mewelde Moore, who replaces Rashard Mendenhall who replaced Willie Parker. We know the Steelers love to run, but the Jags are tough although not extremly tough so far. Jacksonville has been touched for 101.3 yards per game (14th overall) and 4 rush TDs. Like I said, tough call.
REALLY SUCKY -- WASHINGTON AT PHILADELPHIA -- I hate this because Clinton Portis is my horse. The nice thing about him is that he gets 21-22 carries a game along with a couple of catches. But the Eagles are No. 1 in rush D, giving up just an average of 53.8 yards and one lonely TD. Well, at least the weather is supposed to be nice.

At 9 pm sharp, we abandoned our hard homework and settled down in front of our $700 flat screen TV (which I have a 15% stake when we sell it for $10 dollars at the end of this financial year).   Before I had even cracked open my first beer, Hillbilly was already bragging about how McCain was going to do a WWF smackdown on Obama during the town hall debate, a forum in which McCain thrives.  McCain is so darn good and persuading when hes allowed to talk face-to-face to ordinary American folks seated nearby, Hillbilly noted.  Unfortunately for McCain, these 80 audience members was anything but ordinary.  They were super-humans utterly deprived of emotional expression.  Although Tom Brokaw admitted at the beginning of the broadcast that he had strictly warned the audience to refrain from showing any favoritism, he neglected to mention that he also gave them Clydesdale tranquilizers.  The crowd was so stiff that we decided to drink whenever an audience member blinked. Thus we remained sober the entire night (which has permitted me to provide this amazingly detailed account).
I can say little about the early debate points because our $700 TV gets terrible reception for Harvard forbids cable access in the dorms.  Hog Hooligan eventually found the proper angle at which to hoist the TV antenna and directed us to take turns the remainder of the program holding the cumbersome device out the window.
After things finally came into focus, Hillbilly was able to witness with his perfect pilot eyes his candidate getting crushed.  Obama won question after question as McCain stammered to put together complete sentences and coherent thoughts.
At the end, we all wildly applauded Obama for his victory and shouted profanities at old man McCain for being a real jerk.  All except for Hog (who had fallen asleep onto my shoulder) and Hillbilly (who shook his head in shame).

How to Pick the Correct Projector for Your Home Theater
Youre finally making the jump to the holy grail of home theater video displays; the front projection system. Theres nothing else that delivers that really big, impressive video image like a front projection system. Its how you get that real cinema experience in your home theater. Home theater projector prices have plummeted in recent years, and the size of the units have shrunk right along with the prices. No more do have to live with a coffin sized box on your ceiling. As sizes have decreased, the image quality and brightness have actually improved dramatically. Youll notice image quality and brightness are two separate issues.
How do choose the correct home theater projector for your application from the myriad of projectors on the market today? There are so many different units, each with their strengths and weaknesses. First of all, there are two main projection technology categories, analog and digital. Analog projectors are based on CRTs, a mature technology thats been around for decades. Those are the projectors with the separate red, green and blue picture tubes and three lenses on the front. The other projectors use one of the newer digital technologies. These projectors have a single lens on the front. There are three major types of digital projectors on the market today; LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), DLP (Digital Light Processing) and LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon). Each type of digital projector has its advantages too.
You need to evaluate your specific requirements in order to make the proper decision. First of all, look at the room. Is it a dedicated home theater or a multi use room? Do you have complete control of the light? What aesthetic concerns are you dealing with? What is your projector budget? How large of an image do you want? Do you watch primarily DVD movies, TV movies, sports, or other TV programming? What specific source components will you be using with your projector now or in the future? Is picture quality the most important thing, or are other concerns, such as noise, size or brightness more important? Are you installing the projector yourself, or are you hiring a custom installer to do the installation for you? Where must the projector be placed? Can you get the required video and control cables to that location? These questions must be answered to ensure you get the proper projector for your home theater. If you are using a custom installer, they will take into account these factors and specify the appropriate unit for you.
Dramatic improvements in the picture quality of digital projectors notwithstanding, CRT projectors still deliver the most film like image. They have no pixel structure and deliver rich, deep blacks. Properly set up and calibrated, with a good video processor, and with the proper size screen, a CRT projector will deliver simply stunning picture quality. Youll need to use a good quality projection screen, typically with 1.3 - 2.5 gain depending upon the size, viewing angel and ambient light in the room. Prices on really great CRT projectors have fallen like a rock in the last year or two. You can get a 9 CRT projector that used to cost $35,000 to $50,000, for less than a third of that figure now. Many firms no longer make CRT projectors due to the decreased demand for projectors using this technology. In addition, the required video processors have decreased dramatically as well. Ten years ago a great video processor used to cost $10,000 to $20,000. Now you can get one for well under $5,000 and as little as $2,000, brand new. They also easily last 8,000 - 10,000 hours when properly set up.
If they are so fantastic, why doesnt everybody still use CRT projectors? Well, there are many detriments to a CRT projector as well. The best ones, with the 9 tubes, are simply huge. Its like hanging an upside down bathtub on your ceiling. If you want to put one under a coffee table, itll be one large table. They are also very heavy, around 150 - 200lbs, so you need the proper structure to support them. CRT projectors also require precise placement. They must be perfectly square with the screen, at the correct elevation for good picture quality. In addition, while many digital projectors have zoom lenses, allowing the projector to be placed at a range of distance from the screen, CRT projectors must be at a very precise distance for a specific screen size. These factors severely limit placement options. While the larger CRT projectors put out more light than their smaller counterparts, they have pretty dim images compared to even the least expensive digital projectors. Finally, CRT projectors require specialized setup in order to get a watchable, much less an optimum image. Every 6 months to a year, they must be re-calibrated to ensure you are still getting optimum picture quality.
There are some very good reasons why most people are using digital projectors in their home theaters today. Many are small and light, require minimal setup and calibration (compared to a CRT), are quiet and have a bright, sharp image. But, there are many different digital projectors, ranging in price from around $700.00 to over $100,000.00. Which one is the best for your specific application? Thankfully, the situation is changing, but many of the digital projectors marketed for home theater use are really just re-badged presentation units. Presentation projectors sacrifice good video quality for brightness. Brightness is much more important when giving a Powerpoint presentation in a lit room than the correct color palate or the black level. The red on the pie chart looks great, no matter what, as long as you can see it from the back row.
You want to choose one of the newer units that has been truly designed for home theater applications. The actual technology used for the imaging chip is not all that important, there are great examples using all three of the digital technologies. Companies such as Sony, Runco, InFocus, Vidikron, Marantz, Benq, Panasonic, Sharp, Optima and Sanyo and some others all make great home theater projectors. The projector will have great black levels, to accurately reproduce detail in the darker areas of the picture and give great contrast. Absolute brightness is not extremely important, unless you have a multi-use room without complete light control or you have a lot of people over for sporting events. If you are entertaining many people for sports, its nice to have some light on in the room, so a brighter projector is advantageous.
Projectors come in a number of different resolutions. The lower the resolution, the smaller the screen you can use before you can see pixel structure. Also, the lower resolutions will not support true HDTV. Most will display HD, but at a decreased resolution. The lowest end projectors typically have resolutions of 800 x 600. The Texas Instruments Matterhorn chip is popular on budget priced wide screen projectors, and has a resolution of 1024 x 576. Anything over a resolution of 720 will allow for true HDTV. The TI series of HD-2 DLP chips has a resolution of 1280 x 720. In April of 2005, TI announced new DLP chips with 1920 x 1080 was ready for production, allowing for true 1080p resolutions. Projectors with this chip will begin shipping in Q1 of 2006. Blu-Ray Disc has stated they will support 1080p, so by late 2006 there will be commercially available 1080p content besides Microsofts WMHD discs.
Another very important aspect of home theater projectors is the internal video processing. This is one of the primary differences between good home theater projectors and presentation projectors. Digital projectors must display progressive scan images at the native resolution of the chip, so any interlaced signal, such as 1080i HDTV, must be de-interlaced and then scaled to the native chip resolution. Poor quality video processors, weather in the projector or external units, cause all sorts of video artifacts that can get in the way of a satisfying video presentation. This subject alone is too in depth for this article, as entire texts have been written on the subject. However, one common video artifact is where diagonal lines are jagged instead of straight. Hey Soccer Moms, Remember us? Before we had a name, we gave the 1992 Presidential election to Clinton-Gore. About seven million more women voted that year than men. Seven million. For that, they called 1992 the Year of the Woman.

By the '96 election, we got a name. Pollsters discovered that the women who would decide the election weren’t just women, but us “soccer moms” – middle class suburban women who spent a lot of time chauffeuring kids to soccer matches and music lessons and the like. At least, that’s the official definition. We were also well-educated and fed-up with the way the world was being run. There were lots of us looking for change in our lives and in the way our country was being run. We got out and unified and made a difference.

We can do it again! Here it is, 2008, and some Hockey Mom from Alaska is telling the country that she’s one of us because she’s a mom, too.

Not! For starters, we soccer moms are educated – and we’re not talking about six years at five universities to earn one communications/ journalism degree. (Okay, that was a bit snipey, I admit.) We’re organized. We helped deliver the ’92 and ’96 elections. In other words, when we’re not having nervous breakdowns related to our station in life, we’re a powerful political force.

That's right. This election will come down to the Soccer Moms. It’s not us against Hockey Moms, whom we respect for their ability to lace up those skates, among other things. It’s us against that self-described pitbull wearing lipstick. We care about education, healthcare and family issues, just like we always have. Sra. Pitbull says she does, too, but her record shows otherwise.

Top Ten Reasons Why This Mother On the Brink Doesn’t Like the Republican Vice-Presidential Nominee Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (in no particular order – all seem to bother me!):

No. 10: She supports abstinence-only programs! (And we know how well those work….)

No. 1: She opposes abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

OK, so this post isn’t funny, but it’s how I feel. This election does affect each and every one of us and our families. It scares me to think that some people want her one McCainian hearbeat away from the presidency. Argh!!.

I went to Atlanta this weekend for the Sprite Slam Dunk Showcase presented by Sprite and the NBA. The event was held at Lenox Square Mall in the parking lot. Sprite had flown in 16 of the best dunkers in the country to compete for $5,000. Steet legends like TDub, Special FX, JFK, and Werm competed as well as YouTube regulars Golden Child, Elevator, Dthac, and Jonesy. Many of these guys are with Team Flight Brothers who post insane dunks on the web regularly. The atmosphere was cool with a DJ, and special appearances by Marvin Williams of the Hawks, Hot Sauce from And 1, and the Atlanta Hawks dance team. Sprite and the NBA teamed up to put on a great event. Prizes like NBA shirts, headbands, and shorts were given out, as well as free Sprite and water to everyone in attendance. Everyone in the crowd was also given electronic keypads to vote for each dunk, which transmitted to a TV to decide who won.
They had a large bracket with all the contestants’ names on it, so there were head to head battles with the winner moving on. Marvin Williams helped judge the championship round.
The dunks were insane with 540’s, through the legs, behind the back, and windmills shown on a regular. JFK tried to jump over a car, but rolled his ankle in the process and had to pull out. That left a relatively easy road for the 5’9” TDub who wowed the crowd enough to take home the enlarged $5,000 check. Props to Sprite and the NBA for putting on a well thought out and planned event like this for free for people to enjoy.

(left) MacMillan was the Captain of the 1960 National Championship team

One of MacMillans greatest memories from his years at the University of Denver was guiding the Pioneers to the 1960 National Championship by defeating the John MacInnes-coached Michigan Tech Huskies in Boston. MacMillan had scored two goals in the final minute that led the Pioneers 5-3 win, including the game-winner. A now-famous story that emerged from the victory has to do with MacMillan getting the game-winning puck. But as MacMillan explains, a National Championship title and the puck werent the only things that he took home from that memorable event.

I had the game-winning goal and I had another goal in the last minute. One won the game and the other one was an empty netter. I think it was someone from Denver ended up with the puck somehow. I do still have that puck, although I can't remember who saved the puck. Bob Martin, who did the radio for Denver for years, got a letter from somebody saying that they had recorded the game over the radio. I still have a tape at home of the recording of the whole game that somebody gave me, so that was pretty awesome to get it. But again, it was a Denver fan that had recorded it and gave it to me.

After leaving DU in 1960, MacMillan went on to play in both the NHL and the AHL. At the time, his rights were held by the New York Rangers. But a bit of luck and the prejudices against U.S. collegiate players at the time would play crucial roles in MacMillan ending up with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Earlier in the season when I was at DU in 1959-60, we went up to play at Michigan Tech, and Bob Davidson, who was the head scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs, came down to watch a game. We were sitting around eating breakfast one morning and he came over and said my name is Bob Davidson and Id like to talk to you. So I went over and talked to him for a little while, and I didnt think much about it.

When I decided to go to DU, the Rangers released me. They didnt want any part of me anymore, so they dropped me from their "Protected List. Any professional club who thought that was I worth a hoot could pick me up. The Leafs put me on their List after Davidson had talked to me. Thank God, Connie (Conn Smythe) had moved on by the time I was Protected by Toronto because he didn't think much of U.S. college players. Ol Connie would basically say we dont want any of those candy-ass collegiate kids in our league or on our club. Davidson came to the game when we played Tech because Louie Angotti, who played for Tech, had been with the Toronto Marlboros before he went to Michigan Tech. I think Louie was pretty highly regarded. He called Davidson and told him that he should have a look at me. Eventually I received a letter from Toronto inviting me to their camp and the rest is history.

MacMillan spent roughly three and a half years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning two Stanley Cups with them. MacMillans teammates on those Maple Leaf teams read like a Hockey Hall of Fame Whos Who. But it was playing for the legendary George Imlach that he remembers most fondly about his time in Toronto.

When I was in Toronto, Imlach had acquired Al (Arbour) from Chicago. And we were sort of like in a farm system. Back then a farm system would have maybe have a defenseman, a goaltender, and a forward that would go back and forth (from the big club). Imlach was good to me. I mean theyve got all these Marlies that I was playing with in Rochester, but I was the kid that Punch chose to run back and forth. That was good for me. Al was the defenseman, and I was like the tenth forward. So when youre doing that, you feel like youre a part of the team, but you also dont feel like youre a part of the team. You get to do that a little bit and you work hard to stay there. A lot of the players with Toronto at that time had come up through the Marlies organization. And Punch just came in and worked his magic with all of the personalities. He had a real feel for being able to get more out of people than probably a lot of other people could. Some guys didnt like him, and some people had bad things to say about him. He brings up Johnny Bower, who was something like 40 years old, and gets five, six great years out of him. You would hear the names (Frank) Mahovlich, Red Kelly, Tim Horton, Bobby Baun, Carl Brewer and all of those guys. Wow! You want to try to break into a tough lineup? Try and get into that lineup! So when I hear those names, I get all choked up from just having been around them.

Punch was always honest with me and he gave me every opportunity to try to get me to do what he wanted to me to do. I was playing pro for, oh maybe one or two years and I remember Bobby Kromm was coaching in Trail (BC), and Trail had won the Allen Cup and would be going to the World Hockey Championships. It was in 61, 62 somewhere in there. At the time, the Allen Cup in Canada used to be symbolic of the team that would go to the World Championships, and then later they changed all of that. So I called Kromm and I told him who I was and where I was. He said I know who you are. So I said Well, Ive got my degree in Engineering and Id love to go to Europe with you. Ive always wanted to go to Europe, just to play and see it. So he said if you can get your Amateur Card, then youre here. So I went to camp, worked hard and never said a word to anybody. I was still with the Leafs and then it came time for me to go talk to Punch. It wasnt a helluva lot of fun, but you had to go talk to Punch. (Laughs) So I talked to Punch and we got to talking, then I said I want to tell you that I called Bobby Kromm and this is what Id really like to do. Then Punch said I wont do that for you, simply because Eddie Shore will pick you up. And then he said If you dont go play for him, youll never play hockey again because he wont release you. Hell just hang on to you and that would be the end of anything that youd ever want to do. So I didnt get my Amateur Card and I didnt go to Europe.

In todays NHL, each member of the Stanley Cup winning team gets to spend a day with Lord Stanleys Cup. For MacMillan, his day came one summer day in August of 2005. While his time with the Cup in Milk River is well documented, an equally entertaining, if not more hilarious story was that of his travels with it to the border town of Sweetgrass, Montana.

One day, I think it was Friday or Saturday, we were all sitting around and Mike (Mike Bolt, one of the keepers of Lord Stanleys Cup) said, d really like to take the Cup to Montana because theres no reason that itll ever go there, but its been in all these states and Id like to think someday that its been in every state in the United States. So I said, hell, its only 13 miles from Milk River to Sweetgrass. So lets go. So he says what well do is throw in the back (of the truck), well just go down there and well take a picture. He wanted to go down there, hold the Cup under the Welcome to Montana sign and take a picture. Then he says I dont want to report that I have the Cup. And I said if you go through there (the border) and coming back they decide that they want to search you and you cant sell them on the fact that you dont have what you shouldnt have at the border, and they find that Cup, then youre going to spend hours there explaining why you have the Stanley Cup. So we convinced him that he should stop and tell them that he has the Cup and what hes going to do. So we go through towards the American side. He pulls up (at the border), rolls down his window, and the guy begins asking him all the questions. So then he sticks his head out the window and asks the guy do you know what the Stanley Cup is? The guy looked at him like what do you think, Im stupid or something? And then Mike says ve got it in the back Then the guy says ve got the Stanley Cup in the back of that SUV? Mike says . Then the guy says pull over and bring it in.

So we parked out in front and brought it in. By that time, the guy had already left the window, gone inside and everyone in the place knows that the Stanley Cup is coming through the front door. So we come in and then he says to us mon, weve got a plan. So we all got onto an elevator, went up to the second floor and theres a balcony in the U.S. Customs area in Sweetgrass, Montana that you could stand with one leg in Canada and one leg in the U.S. So they sit the Cup so it splits the line there and then all these U.S. immigration people are up there taking their pictures with the Cup. And theyre no different than a class of ten-year-olds getting their pictures taken with the Stanley Cup. Plus, they get on the phone and you can see this balcony from the Canadian side. And they holler out at the guys over there and said take a look out the window and see what weve got. You could see the Stanley Cup up there (in the balcony). So all of a sudden, here come all of these Canadians running towards the border. I dont know how long we spent there with everyone getting their pictures taken. Finally that was all done. Then we drove out of Sweetgrass and started up the hill and theres the sign that says, Welcome to Montana. So we pulled over to the side of the road. We pop the lid of the box that the Cup is in and get it out. We walked through this knee-high grass, through the ditch and up on the edge. Then Mike says take my picture first. So hes holding the Cup under the sign and we take his picture. Then he says Now John you take a hold of it and get under there and well take your picture. So as were doing all of this, this big 18-wheeler goes by and his (the drivers) head turns and he sees the Cup. Well then, here comes another big 18-wheeler, and he just pulls over to the side of the road and stops maybe four feet from us. Then the guy jumps out and asks is that the Stanley Cup? then Mike says . Right away this guys asks can I hold it? Can I get my picture taken with it? Of course Mikes very accommodating. So heres this guy standing in front of his truck holding the Stanley Cup getting his picture taken. He was just beside himself with excitement that this has happened. So we had a great time with it. We really did. It was fun to have it there.

With all of his success, John MacMillan remains humble and grounded. He is genuine with a gentle humor. And he is also one of the most personable individuals that you could ever meet. Now approaching his mid-70s, MacMillan is still as passionate and enthusiastic about hockey as he probably was the first time he ever laced up a pair of skates. Whether its stories and recollections about his wonderful family or the game that he loves, he will always share them with a smile.

The much anticipated Pedowitz Report has been released. You can read the 133 page document by visiting http://www.nba.com/media/PedowitzReport.pdf. If you are just interested in the bottom line conclusions, the NBA has issued a two page press release that contains four crucial bullet points:

Along with his recommendations, Mr. Pedowitz reported the following findings:

• He found no evidence that any NBA referee other than Mr. Donaghy bet on NBA games or leaked confidential NBA information to gamblers, and no evidence that phone calls between referee Scott Foster and Donaghy were attributable to criminal activity.

• He found no evidence that any referee miscalled a game to favor a particular team or player, or that the League has asked referees to call games to favor particular teams or players.

• He found no evidence to support specific allegations of game manipulation or misconduct made by Mr. Donaghy and his attorney in June 2008, including allegations regarding a 2005 playoff series between the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets and a 2002 playoff series between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings.

• He found that a number of referees engaged in forms of gambling other than betting on NBA games, in violation of League rules. The League previously decided not to discipline referees for these violations.

Pedowitz and his investigators were not able to interview Donaghy directly but according to the report they "conducted approximately 200 interviews," speaking with 57 referees plus numerous team and league executives. I read the entire report and my initial impression is that it will not change too many people's minds: those who believe either in some NBA "conspiracy" to affect the outcome of games and/or those who simply believe that NBA officiating is bad will still believe those things, while those who believe that the NBA has done the best job that it can will say that the Pedowitz investigation offers substantial proof that this is the case. My opinion is that there is no conspiracy to alter the outcomes of games/playoff series and that the NBA referees are among the best in all sports but that the NBA must be vigilant not only to avoid impropriety but the perception of impropriety and that the NBA should be more aware of the personal conduct of referees on and off the court.

It is clearly problematic that neither Pedowitz nor the NBA were able to speak with Donaghy and Pedowitz's report acknowledges this without dwelling on the issue. Without talking to Donaghy, Pedowitz and his investigators basically had to resort to context clues and process of elimination deduction to even figure out which games should be looked at more closely. Of course, even the most casual NBA fan immediately realized that two of Donaghy's most well publicized accusations concerned the 2005 playoff series between Dallas and Houston and the 2002 playoff series between L.A. and Sacramento. The Pedowitz Report looks at both series in great detail but if you just interested in the bottom line here is what the Pedowitz Report concluded:

Dallas-Houston, 2005 Playoff Series:

We have found no evidence of any inappropriate conduct in this playoff series. There is no evidence that anyone in the League office or any of the referees were intending to favor one team over another. Based at least in part on the Mavericks’ complaints, the League identified a type of erroneous non-call that referees had made in prior games and sought to correct it for future games. While Van Gundy continues to take issue with how he believes the message to correct the erroneous non-calls was delivered to the referees, he does not believe the referees or anyone else intentionally sought to manipulate a game or injure his team.

This incident has caused us to focus on the process by which team complaints about officiating are received and resolved. As we discuss in our Recommendations, we believe that all team complaints about officiating during the playoffs and the League’s response to those complaints should be posted for both teams to see.

L.A.-Sacramento, 2002 Playoff Series:

The game was, in the opinion of the reviewers, poorly officiated. There were a total of fifteen incorrect calls or non-calls. Of these fifteen errors, eight favored the Lakers, while seven favored the Kings. The bulk of the game’s incorrect calls and non-calls occurred during the first three quarters. In the critical fourth quarter, there were only three incorrect calls or non-calls: two favored the Lakers and one favored the Kings. The officiating errors were found to be distributed among the three referees as follows:

• (Dick) Bavetta made nine errors in the game, five of which favored the Lakers and four of which favored the Kings. None of these errors occurred in the fourth quarter.
• (Ted) Bernhardt made six errors, four of which favored the Lakers and two of which favored the Kings. In the fourth quarter, Bernhardt made one error favoring the Lakers.
• (Bob) Delaney made four errors in the game, two of which favored the Lakers and two of which favored the Kings. In the fourth quarter, Delaney made three of his errors: two favoring the Lakers and one favoring the Kings.

The gist of the Pedowitz Report's findings regarding this game is that it was poorly officiated but that there is no evidence that the referees intentionally did a bad job. However, there is an interesting passage about the interactions between Dick Bavetta and Bob Delaney that is disquieting; if two high profile referees have personal issues that may be affecting the quality of their officiating when they are on the same crew then the league should either compel them to resolve those issues, never assign them to work together or terminate one or both referees. Here is how the Pedowitz Report explains what happened during this game and in particular why two rather infamous calls were incorrectly made:

We also discussed Donaghy’s allegations with Ed T. Rush, who was Director of Officials at the time. Rush was present in the arena and supervised the referees during the game. He told us that he was well aware during the game that the referees were having a bad game and making errors. Rush told us that he has reviewed the video of this game on a number of occasions, and the pattern of calls, in his opinion, do not reflect favoritism. He added that it was also inconceivable to him that any of the referees would set out intentionally to extend a series. He pointed out that all of the referees are in competition each year to officiate playoff games and said it was impossible for him to believe any referee would deliberately make erroneous calls and subject himself or herself to having their calls repeatedly reviewed and criticized by the media.

Rush told us he thought that Bernhardt’s performance that night had been satisfactory, and nothing about his performance suggested that he was trying to favor either team. As to Bavetta, while he made a substantial number of errors, Rush felt there was nothing about his call patterns that suggested he was deliberately trying to favor the Lakers. Rush also noted that Bavetta had performed well in the fourth quarter, making no errors.

As to Delaney, Rush was aware that he was involved in the two most controversial calls in the fourth quarter--plays that Donaghy appears to single out as suggesting manipulation. Rush told us that he has known Delaney for many years and believes Delaney is a highly honorable person. He noted that Delaney had been a highly decorated law enforcement officer before he joined the NBA. (Delaney served with the New Jersey State Police for fourteen years before becoming an NBA referee. Delaney’s career included a three-year undercover assignment in connection with a major organized crime investigation. In 1981, Delaney testified as a law enforcement expert before a Senate subcommittee during hearings on waterfront corruption. Senators Warren Rudman and Sam Nunn praised him for his effectiveness and bravery. To this day, Delaney regularly gives speeches at federal law enforcement training sessions and to undercover operatives in the United States and Canada.)

Rush also recalled that Delaney made only a few errors but was nonetheless quite upset with the errors he had made in the fourth quarter. Having known and observed Delaney on and off the floor, and knowing how hard he tried to avoid mistakes, Rush said that he could not imagine Delaney ever deliberately manipulating a game. Rush told us that he had been in touch with Delaney and his wife after the game and learned that Delaney was so upset about his performance in that game that he had suffered sleepless nights.

Rush also told us that he thought that it had been a mistake (for which he took some responsibility) to have teamed Delaney with Bavetta in this game. While Delaney and Bavetta once had a close friendship, they had a falling out in connection with a personal matter some years before this game, and Rush felt that the poor chemistry between the two referees contributed to the crew’s poor performance in this game.

We reviewed the video of this game and discussed with NBA Basketball Operations personnel the erroneous call against Divac and the non-call against Bryant. They explained to us how Delaney and Bernhardt (on the second call) could have missed these calls. The first play, which resulted in Divac receiving his sixth foul, came while Divac was on the floor battling for the ball. Delaney saw numerous players in the scramble and blew his whistle as Bryant was moving in front of him, obstructing his view of the play. The instinct to make a call was understandable; Delaney just made the wrong one.

The second play occurred with twelve seconds left in the game, when Kobe Bryant, trying to free himself on an inbounds play, elbowed Mike Bibby in the face. While Bryant’s elbow, though seemingly inadvertent, was a foul, it occurred only after Bibby grabbed Bryant’s arms in what appears to be an effort to prevent him from freeing himself to receive the inbounds pass. Delaney was positioned on the baseline at an angle that prevented him from getting a good look at the play. Bibby had his back to Delaney, and contact of the nature of the elbow to Bibby’s nose is often incidental. The blood from Bibby’s nose was not seen until later. Bernhardt was the slot official at the time. Bryant moved away from Bernhardt’s position, so Bernhardt also did not have a good angle to see Bryant’s elbow to Bibby. Indeed, the Basketball Operations personnel told us that the television camera had by far the best view of this play.

As noted above, we also re-interviewed all of the current referees after Donaghy’s allegations surfaced in June 2008. There was not a single referee among the dozens we interviewed who supported Donaghy’s claims about this game. The referees told us that the consistent message from the League is to make accurate calls. It has never been suggested to them that they should favor a team or try to extend a series.

Some referees also told us that no rational referee would deliberately make incorrect calls in a game (let alone a playoff game) and subject him or herself to the embarrassment of having calls replayed over and over on ESPN. Some told us that not only was the allegation illogical for that reason, but there also is no economic incentive for referees to try to extend a series. While a referee receives additional compensation for each round of the playoffs he or she officiates, this compensation is the same for a given round whether a referee officiates one or two games in that playoff round.

A number of referees also noted that, because of the strained personal relationship between Delaney and Bavetta, the two men were unlikely to engage in any cooperative venture, let alone one that involved clearly improper conduct. A number of referees also offered the following observation: Game 6 was a controversial game with which almost every veteran referee is familiar. Because it is well known that the referees made numerous errors in the game, it was easy for Donaghy--trying to avoid a jail sentence by providing information about other referees--to suggest that he had a conversation with one of the referees to the effect that two of them hoped to extend the series.

One of the referees told us that he had discussed this game with Donaghy years earlier. While Donaghy had noted the many errors by the referees, he never suggested that he had heard that referees in this game made bad calls to extend the series. We also found it noteworthy that, while referee basketball gossip travels quickly throughout the referee ranks, the referees had not heard any suggestion that Bavetta and Delaney had tried to extend the series.

We have not seen or heard evidentiary or logical support for Donaghy’s allegations about this game.

Any person who is objective realizes that even the best referees are going to miss some calls for a variety of reasons and that fans watching games on TV have the benefit of numerous camera angles plus instant replay, luxuries that the referees do not have; they get one chance at full speed to make the right call. The bottom line is that coaches, players and referees all make mistakes. That is just part of the game. The goal for all parties concerned is to minimize those mistakes. In game seven of the Lakers-Kings 2002 series, the Kings lost by six points in overtime after shooting just 16-30 from the free throw line; if they made more of those free throws then they would have won the series even though the referees did not have a great game six. I think that it is reckless and irresponsible to say that game six was "fixed." I would suggest that anyone who says this take a look at his or her own job performance and consider what standard he or she expects to be held to and if that standard equals the call accuracy that NBA officials maintain.

Byrd shook his head. The crowd muttered, and some called out, "Play him nine-four!" But Byrd refused to reduce his advantage.

Finally Byrd turned and pointed at the burly man in the Phillies cap. "Let Efren play Cliff," he said. "I'll put up five dimes [$5,000] on Cliff if Efren plays him eight-seven."

All eyes turned toward Reyes, sitting on his chair. He stood and said, "I play."

The crowd erupted, people yelling into their cell phones, "Efren's playing Cliff for five dimes!" Men started shouting: "I'll take five nickels [$500] of that action." "I'll take a dime." Dozens of men waved fistfuls of bills at the small man from the crowd. He collected the billsmaybe $20,000 in side betsand wrote names on a piece of paper. Meanwhile, Spanish Mike produced a wad of bills. He counted out $5,000 and handed it to the small man. Byrd did the same. The game was set: $5,000, winner take all. Reyes would have to pocket eight balls a rack to win, and Cliff only seven. The first man to win eight games would win the $5,000.

The first game began with an audience of more than 400 fans, all sitting on one side of the room. The series lasted six hours, full of unbelievable tension and skill. The spectators were witness to the game of a lifetime, between two men who, though rated the top two one-pocket players in the world, had rarely played each other.

Adam would crack open an eye to stare at the ceiling after his light doze had worn off. After a player has their second quarter taken away, the player is out. Deck is reshuffled after each round. Game ends and the pooled change is awarded when only one person has a quarter left.

I went to Atlanta this weekend for the Sprite Slam Dunk Showcase presented by Sprite and the NBA. The event was held at Lenox Square Mall in the parking lot. Sprite had flown in 16 of the best dunkers in the country to compete for $5,000. Steet legends like TDub, Special FX, JFK, and Werm competed as well as YouTube regulars Golden Child, Elevator, Dthac, and Jonesy. Many of these guys are with Team Flight Brothers who post insane dunks on the web regularly. The atmosphere was cool with a DJ, and special appearances by Marvin Williams of the Hawks, Hot Sauce from And 1, and the Atlanta Hawks dance team. Sprite and the NBA teamed up to put on a great event. Prizes like NBA shirts, headbands, and shorts were given out, as well as free Sprite and water to everyone in attendance. Everyone in the crowd was also given electronic keypads to vote for each dunk, which transmitted to a TV to decide who won.
They had a large bracket with all the contestants’ names on it, so there were head to head battles with the winner moving on. Marvin Williams helped judge the championship round.
The dunks were insane with 540’s, through the legs, behind the back, and windmills shown on a regular. JFK tried to jump over a car, but rolled his ankle in the process and had to pull out. That left a relatively easy road for the 5’9” TDub who wowed the crowd enough to take home the enlarged $5,000 check. Props to Sprite and the NBA for putting on a well thought out and planned event like this for free for people to enjoy.

Itapos;s been soooo long since I was last here, seriously about a year I kind of got through anorexia.. Still counting calories here and there, but on the whole I was doing well. Deep down I think I always knew I was completely mad to behave the way I did. I still did it though. One day I realised I couldnapos;t do this anymore. That was my way of life, Iapos;d become so used to it, it felt normal, but maybe it was one too many purges, or the countless times I nearly collapsed from lack of energy, that made me want to change. Although personally I put it down to having a loving boyfriend, who I then realised would love me, no matter what I ate, how I looked, how fat I was or.. How bad my morning breath is I have now been with my boyfriend for nearly a year. Itapos;s been about 10 months since I decided I wanted to get rid of ana forever.

Now I face a bigger problem.. We have both gone to university 150 miles away from each other. We are still together, but I can only see him every other weekend. At first we saw each other every few days (he started uni later than me) so he came down for a few days etc. Now I canapos;t take it. I miss him so much, I need him. Iapos;m not eating properly again, Iapos;m scared of him not wanting to see me, Iapos;m scared Iapos;ll put on weight, I canapos;t take it. It sounds really pathetic to be like this over a guy, but to me heapos;s not any guy, heapos;s mine and I love him so much, I miss him more than anything. I get upset thinking about him all the time. To make matters worse, the person living next to me in my university halls is always rambling on about apos;apos;freshersapos; 15apos;apos;.. Apparently you put on 15lbs in your first year of university So you can imagine how that makes me feel. I felt the only person (or people) I could turn to was this website. I remember how helpful everyone was to me last year. If I was upset about anything, I could come here. Thatapos;s why Iapos;m back. You were so supportive. I know really I shouldnapos;t be here. Iapos;ve come this far to get over it, why ruin it all. I canapos;t help myself.

Iapos;ve started setting myself goals again for when I next see him. This week I need to be under 98lbs (7st) by next weekend. At the moment Iapos;m 7st 5lbs (103lbs) so itapos;s quite an easy target but I want to be as under that as possible. Iapos;m only 5apos;1" so 103lbs isnapos;t as thin as it seems for me.
Anyway I realised how long this post was, so Ill leave it at that.

We, in the billiard industry, are especially appreciative of what he did for the sport. Even now, almost 50 years after its release, The Hustler still captures todays pool enthusiasts and holds them in its' spell. Whenever we have the film showing in our billiard hall, people still comment on what a great film it is.

The Hustler is an adaptation of the 1959 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. Sidney Carroll and Robert Rossen adapted the novel for the screen. Rossen directed the film, shot on location in New York City. It stars Paul Newman as Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, Piper Laurie as Sarah and George C. Scott as Bert.

The film was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards; it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of pool. A real pool hustler was inspired to adopt the name of Gleason's character, Minnesota Fats, and to use the association with the film in his search for celebrity."

Even though the pool hall and the industry in general has evolved into a more benevolent sport, the raw basics of the game are timeless. The Hustler shows us the skill and the dedication to the game of billiards in a wonderful, but harsh story.

The Color of Money, the sequel to The Hustler, brings the sport into the 80's, making it more contemporary, but still not without the dark side. Paul Newman won his only Academy Award for his portrayl of Fast Eddie Felson in The Color of Money. The Color of Money brought a new popularity to the sport of billiards, and many famous pool players had cameo appearances in the film as well as served as technical advisors amd consultants.

So in closing, we thank Paul Newman for showing the world about pool and billiards. Without these two magnificent films, the wonderful sport of billiards would not have gained the acceptance that it has. It is truly a sport for all.

Ah, but this principle has a much broader importance. It ranks among the most powerful laws in the gambling universe. Great poker pros are governed by it. So are Henry, Jack and Felix at your Friday night game. So are blackjack players and golfers, craps shooters and backgammon superstars.
THE BLACK HOLE
Im talking about The Power, baby. Its a black hole in the poker table that can suck up all your chips and send you home whimpering. Im talking about a merciless, ubiquitous, universal law that will never leave you alone until you honor it.
Im talking about Caros Law of Least Tilt. Exactly What is Tilt, Anyway? You might not know the meaning of the phrase going on tilt. Turning to the Random House Dictionary of the English Language (unabridged), we find on page 606 that going on tilt is not defined.
A pity. But checking a more credible source, Doyle Brunsons Super/System - A Course in Power Poker, we see that the term on tilt is defined on page 539. Quote: When a player starts playing bad (loses his composure), usually after losing one or more big pots, hes said to be on tilt.
There are other slang ways to express this phenomenon. Vegas regulars call it In my favorite Denver game, we used to say a man had flipped a pancake.
IT HAPPENS TO PLAYERS PINBALL MACHINES
Going on tilt describes it best. What happens to a pinball machine when you shake it too hard? The lights go out, its normal mechanical functions are short-circuited, it stops playing its normal game, and suddenly the word Tilt flashes on its scoreboard.
Isnt that what happens to a poker player when you shake him too hard? Most players can take their bad beats graciously for a while; but when they suffer one blow too many, something usually snaps. Gee, that seems too obvious to bother saying. Obvious, hell! Ask around and see what the best poker players think is most important. Their opinions will vary. To save you the trouble, I actually surveyed ten tough players. My question was: In a poker game among players whose ability is about equal, what do you think is the most important winning edge?
Using a little judgment, I placed their answers into the following categories-
Knowledge of mathematics: 4
Psychological skill: 3
Knowing when to quit: 2
Alertness: 1
Had I undertaken a larger survey, other things would have appeared. But the point is made by this small sample. Incredibly, nobody mentioned the Law of Least Tilt! Everything listed is important.
KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS
A very weak player who knows nothing about probabilities or mathematics will be at the mercy of a knowledgeable opponent. However, a player with an outstanding grasp of odds and statistics is only a small favorite over a player with a pretty good understanding.
Of course, in some poker games even a small difference in mathematical ability can be critical. Seven-card high-low split is such a game.
PSYCHOLGICAL SKILL
Very important. But, in a game involving contestants of equal overall talent, is it likely that there will be much difference here? No.
KNOWING WHEN TO QUIT
For a bunch of reasons which I dont want to discuss now, its better to quit when youre losing than when youre winning. Most players get this backwards and play longer when theyre losing. Anyway, seldom does one player secure an important edge over his peers by quitting at the correct times.
ALERTNESS
Youll seldom find a game among equally skilled foes where one is substantially more alert than his opponents.
TILT BY MUTUAL AGREEMENT
Tour the card rooms of Las Vegas, the poker parlors of California, the private games in Texas. Try legal seven-stud in Washington and Oregon. Play Hold em in Montana.
Yep, pokers booming everywhere. Look for the toughest, meanest game in the area. Ask around, youll find it. Its usually a medium or high-stakes contest and its often comprised of the same regular players night after night. Sometimes theres a stranger to throw off some money; but usually its survival of the fittest - hometown heroes battling for regional honors.
Im talking about a poker game where players of approximately the same expectations wage a war of egos. Listen to me, you seven-card stud superstars - Im talking to you!
Almost every ego contest Ive witnessed has an unspoken rule that goes like this: Weak players are timid and were not weak, so lets bet our hands like crazy. Nobody will get hurt if everyone does it.
Theres more to this tacit understanding. Any player who suffers two bad beats in a row is expected to play more recklessly than usual.
Oh, I almost forgot, theres another part. If a stranger gets in the game and tries to take advantage of our generous bets and raises, well play conservatively.
This last part is consistently violated. Take these poker pros and near-pros aside and ask what theyd do if a solid, talented player from Milwaukee sat in their game.

The sad thing is, these guys really believe this! Gosh, you take your skilled sever-stud prayer from Topeka and put him in the $30 and $60 limit seven-stud game at the Sahara and . well, I like his chances.
EGO, EGO RAISE EM UP!
The talent in this game is awesome. Gathered here at the Sahara is some of the keenest seven-stud talent that ever sprouted West of the Rockies. But, yes, they do play too recklessly and when they lose too many pots and get on tilt they play really recklessly.
Naturally, youd expect this to stop when Fred from Sacramento sits in the game. You guys remember Fred, dont you? Following my instructions he won $3210 in one session. You probably dont remember, since that isnt a milestone win. And, of course, you dont remember Charlie since he won only $1530.
These players were sent in the game as an experiment; and they both reported the same thing. The regular players did not lighten up on their raises. Instead, they made these new players a target and tried to intimidate them with a barrage of irrational raises.
Following my advice, both Fred and Charlie called timidly for the first several pots, letting the aggressors establish an image. Then they counter attacked for three consecutive hands. Theyd been instructed to get the last bet in at every opportunity (within reason) no matter what cards they held. Although Charlie managed to lose all three pots, Fred won two of his, once making an inside straight down the river against queens-up.
CONTROLLED TILT - THE CRUELEST WEAPON
According to plan, Fred and Charlie never got out of line after that. They had established an early reckless image. The image stuck, even though they played solid poker from then on. The regular players felt confident that the tacit loose-play agreement was not in jeopardy. No one, they reasoned, was taking advantage.
Although these two sessions are not significant enough to prove the point, lets make believe they are. What the hell, were talking about more than 400 hands, and only a statistician would demand a larger sample.
What it proves is this: In a game where everyone goes on tilt some of the time, the player who spends the fewest minutes on tilt wins the most money.
(Since some tilt plays are horrible and others are merely bad, you could argue that it isnt the time of tilt, but the quality of tilt that determines the winners. Its really both.)
Controlled Tilt is simply doing the things that a player on tilt does, while being motivated rationally rather than emotionally. The strategy is to appear totally berserk while remaining thoroughly in command. This is the cruelest, most profitable tactic I know.

We wanted to share that with you for a couple of reasons everything that she had been praying in those prayers were fulfilled in that encounter. By seeing Jesus he gave her the peace that she had prayed for; she knew that HE was with her, that he was waiting on her and that he was her healer and deliverer. And the most important part was she knew how much Jesus loved her and how important forgiveness is.

I think if she were with us right now she would want to remind us of these 2 main things:
1. First, is forgiveness. She knew that through salvation Jesus had forgiven her and more importantly she knew through the experiences she had with him on that Saturday morning that he wanted her to walk in forgiveness. I encourage you today right now that if you have un-forgiveness toward someone to forgive them. When we refuse to forgive someone it only keeps us hurting and bound up, it keeps us walking in anger it really does not affect the person we havent forgiven. I know that she would want each and everyone of us to forgive - you know one of those other prayers she had marked was about letting go of anger and forgiving. In honor of her do that today forgive anyone that you have held anger toward. Release them it doesnt mean that what they did to you was right but dont hold un-forgiveness toward them. Make a decision today in honor of Geneva Katherine Hughes that you are going to forgive them and release them.
2. Secondly, we believe she would want everyone here to know that Jesus loves you so much. The Bible says in Romans 8:38-39 I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from Gods love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrownot even the powers of hell can separate us from Gods love. No power in the sky above or in the earth belowindeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Whether you have ever accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior or not does not change the fact that he loves you so much. I know that Grandma would say accept Jesus today make Him your Lord and Savior. Accept the person who loves you unconditionally, who doesnt make you get everything in our life before we come to him. The Bible says in Romans 5:8 that while we were lost in our sins Christ died for us. She would say accept that free gift of salvation today. She would not want you to miss out on the wonderful relationship with Jesus that she had here on this earth and that she is now experiencing in heaven. No amount of cards, flowers or money could honor her life more than giving your life to Jesus today.

And for those of us who have made Jesus our Lord to understand there is nothing we have done in our past that can separate us from Gods love. No amount of sin or wrongdoing can separate us from Gods love. God loves you so much and she would want you to know that today that you can walk out of here knowing the vastness of God loves for you, that he is for you, he wants to be a part of your life and he has a great plan for you.

Lastly, she would want us to know that she is truly finally HOME. That on September 12th Jesus met Geneva Katherine Hughes face to face and that she is now enjoying the peace and beauty of heaven. Thank you.

God is so good. Through the experience she had with him she was able to be at peace those last few days PLUS it gave us the family peace as well. God did not allow her to suffer with the pain for months on end - he took her quickly and peacefully. I will miss her immensely but am so thankful she is in heaven free of pain and worshiping her savior.

Last week, I suffered from having personal-life stuff leaving me in no mood to blog when I needed to, and not a great deal to discuss, either. This week, the list of potential talking points is as long as your arm, and I simply can't do the meat of this book justice.

First of note is that Dorothy L. Sayers completes her masterly misdirection and reveals Miss Ann Dorland to be quite a sympathetic character. She's certainly stupid, and Sayers doesn't mince words about her poor choices, but it's incredibly interesting to see Lord Peter Wimsey insist that there must be more to her than the grouchy, uncooperative jerk who consented to be interviewed by Inspector Parker and be proven right. So she done it all for love, as they say. I am intrigued by the slow revelations that Miss Dorland is completely unsuited to the hedonistic lifestyle of all the pretty young things of the artistic community. LPW quickly dismisses her painting as poor and amateurish, and she deluded herself that her relationship with Dr. Penberthy was an engagement. There are some very interesting suggestions about her sexual appetite being a "mania," but one thing seems certain: she's not capable of going to bed with a man and subsequently thinking that it's more than sex. This is the wrong crowd for her.

But Dr. Penberthy is the real murderer, and Miss Dorland merely an unwitting accomplice. I can't stress this part enough: while by this point, Sayers had completed three novels and a handful of short stories, all of them remarkably entertaining in one way or another, she really elevated herself to one of the greats with the climax of this book. It's bloodchilling. The dispassionate way that LPW and Penberthy discuss the only way out which will exonerate Miss Dorland just left me white. The television adaptation is pretty amazing as well, in its creepy silence and cold stares, but the restrictions of time made it impossible to do it justice, so they changed the pacing. In the novel, Penberthy is given half an hour to write his confession and clear his thoughts while LPW and Col. Marchbanks discuss the unpleasantness, and then, when Marchbanks produces a revolver, which, beautifully, is never actually identified as a revolver, merely "the thing," and leaves it within reach of Penberthy, it comes as a release after the buildup of the tension. On TV, LPW and Marchbanks had already discussed this offscreen and Penberthy not given a half hour, and so the handover of the gun really only starts the tension, which is increased while the duo retire to the club's bar for a drink and await the shot. There are only the most minimal changes in what actually happens, but the way the event is staged makes it a very different experience.

I was struck by another change as well. In the first episode, I wondered whether LPW's strange generosity with money might have been a conscious decision to soften the character for TV, and make him more palatable to a post-World War Two audience. Well, when LPW is called by Sheila Fentiman in the middle of the night in a panic after George's latest disappearance, something similar occurs to me. Now, in the novel, LPW briefly gets rid of the Fentimans' landlord, Mr. Munns, by asking him to get the fellow at the nearby pub to let him have an after-hours bottle of whiskey. In the TV version, he has Munns ring up Bunter instead to bring a bottle. This places Bunter at the Fentimans' flat when Mr. Munns tells this ghoulish anecdote about a neighbor who also suffered from shellshock and blackouts and murdered his family. As inappropriate anecdotes go, this really takes some topping. Naturally, in the novel, LPW coldly and firmly tells him to shut his idiot mouth. But the television Wimsey is an altogether nicer and cheerier sort of fellow, and Ian Carmichael delivers dialogue which is often very accurate, but with a little more sunshine than those lines might otherwise be read. So it falls to Bunter to savagely tell Munns to drop it.

There's a lot more to be said, including Sayers name-checking and tipping her hat at length to her predecessor in detective fiction, Austin Freeman, but that will do for now. It's a fantastic book, go and read it, and be here next time when we spend a couple of weeks on the last two of the original dozen short stories.

Im still in Girl Scouts and Im in highschool. Yeh,Im deffinately not a dork.

Also, I hate guys. They pretty much suck. Wanna hear a pathetic romance story? Well about a month before school started, summer marching band started. From 8-4 we marched outside. Thats the same amount of time of a regular school day Our band ispretty strict. We practice everyday after school and havegames on fridays and saturdays are contest days. We havejust about the most reconizedband in the state,and our state is pretty populated and big (one ofthe 5 biggest, not tellingWell of corse I got bored. And during lunch I kinda hung out with some of my ex-best friends (Iapos;ll tell you the story later). Lets call him Eric. Eric kinda hung out with my ex friends too, for lack of anyone else. If you havent guessed, yes I like Eric. Hes smart (smarter than me even), and funny, and cute and thats when I started having this huge crush on him. I already knew him sorta. We were in band in 6th and 8th grade together. We both play the french horn. He in my opinion is better than me even though Iapos;ve been a chair above him all year. Well school started and we had our first football game. It was pretty cool except I didnt get to march the whole show cause an upperclassman was shadowing me and we split the show in half (hes not shadowing me anymore though, I have a guarenteed spot).In the standswernt very organized cause it was the first game, but even so Eric camehe was supposed to be sitting and sat by me and shared music. Weand laughed the rest of theOn the 2 hourbus triphe also sat next to me.(He picked my bus out of the 13 band buses, yeah bigband) He said he wanted to sleepI said I was tired too. Perpetrators only hours after the Virgina Tech shooting had ended up blaming computer video games for the bloodiest massacre in U.S. history. This is what Jack Thompson told Fox or anyone else who would listen that These are real lives. These are real people that are in the ground now because of this game. I have no doubt about it, Thompson is an attorney for Florida and an avid critic of the video game industry. The video game that Thompson was focusing on was Counter Strike a massively popular team-based tactical shooting game that puts players in the heavily armed boots of either a counter-terrorist or terrorist. The problem here is the shooter, Seung-Hui Cho is not even known to be a big fan of the game counter strike. After the shooting the video game industry was appalled that the finger was being pointed to them even though Seung-Hui Cho was recorded to being mentally disturbed and had a history of violent acts in the past. Thompson got so bold that he called gamers and referred to video games as mental masturbation. He considers himself a crusader or pioneer in the war against the video game industry. Pretty bold for some one who probably hasnt played many video games in his life. In recent years hes blamed games such as and Grand Theft Auto III for school shootings in Littleton, Colo., Red Lake, Minn. and Paducah, Ky. As a result and not surprisingly Thompson has launched several unsuccessful lawsuits. Thompson explains that the media, specifically video games glorifies killing especially on a massive scale which equates to becoming a fiber of the character of the person playing the video games. By Tuesday after the shootings it was noted that Seung-Hui Cho in high school was a big fan of violent video game especially However Chos university suite-mate said he had never seen Cho play video games. Thompson even sent a letter to Bill Gates explaining that Microsoft was potently liable for the harm done at Virgina Tech stating that Counter Strike is game designed to simulate killing and how to kill. Thompson does admit that there where many factors that lead to the shooting but video games are what provided Cho with the skills necessary to carry out what he did. On the flip side is Dr. Karen Sternheimer, a sociologist at the University of Southern Calfornia and author of the book Kids These Days: Facts and Fictions About Todays Youth, disagrees. She stats that it didnt take much skill for Cho to do what he did especially sense there where many eye witnesses that saw people where shot a point blank range. For all the claims Thompson made about video games being the cause of all the violence, Sternheimer relates the shooting at the University of Texas in 1966 when Pong had not even been invented yet. One thing that people often dont realize is that in the years since video game sales have really exploded, not only have youth violence rates decreased but violence rates in the U.S. have declined precipitously, she added. She also added it is pretty common for a young male like Cho to have played video games at some point in his life. The simple solution is blame someone like the video game industry for such a complected problem because we as a society want answers we want closure. This of course is not the first time pop culture has been the bad guy for something, in the 50s it was rock and roll, the 30s it was Jazz, literature, TV, Movies have all been there as well. What Thompson does is he feeds off of the fear of people who dont understand video games. A common phrase is What you dont understand scarys you. There have been groups formed to counter act and education people on what video game are really for and that video games are not killing simulators. Being a gamer myself I know there are a lot of normal people playing video game like Counter Strike that would have no intension of kill anyone afterwards, people play for fun

On Thursday we reported that the director of the sequels was rallying support for a novel way to tackle piracy, by encouraging fans to upload fakes to BitTorrent. The director, Darren Bousman, who admits to not being particularly Internet tech-savvy, was doing his best to protect the soundtrack of his upcoming movie, Repo! The Genetic Opera, from Internet piracy.


The report caused quite a stir, with dedicated Repo! fans, known as the Repo Army, angry at BitTorrent users for their soundtrack (more about why this is so important to them later) and BitTorrent users angry at the Repo! fans for trying to mess up their torrent sites with fakes.


Director Darren Bousman has since told his fans to leave BitTorrent alone, and there even some torrent users having friendly chats on the Repo! forums now. To see things from the other side, we caught up with Darren to find out exactly why this soundtrack is so important to the Repo! fans.


TF: Please introduce yourself to the TorrentFreak readers.


dlb: Most of you know me from the SAW films. But long before SAW I was directing this little stage play called Repo! The Genetic Opera. It was the first thing I ever read that spoke to me. I have been fighting to get it made [as a movie] ever since. Its been a long long road - and only now, after the success of three SAW films am I able to get Repo! off the ground.


TF: What makes it so different to your previous work?


dlb: Repo! to me was about doing something completely different. I had directed three sequels. I am proud of the SAW films, but I wanted to do something unique. Repo! is that. A lot of people will hate Repo!, a lot will love it. I will admit its polarizing. But I wouldnt have it any other way. Repo! is so different than SAW in every single aspect. I hope people give it a chance, and dont prejudge it because of certain cast members they may dislike, or on the mere fact people in it.


TF: Youve gone on record saying that you feel very protective of the movie, as if watching over a childs first day at school, and thats understandable. The actual movie comes out on November 7th, however, you asked the fans to concentrate on the soundtrack instead. Could you explain why this soundtrack is so crucial to you, your fans and the upcoming movie?


dlb: I am not some muti-millionaire - and sales of this album will affect me personally. I have been begging and pleading to get this movie made since 2001. I have fought, burned bridges, sacrificed relationships, and even ended relationships all based on Repo! Why? Because I believe in the project so much. I put all my resources into making this movie. However though the entire course of making it - I was told IT WOULDNT work, that there wasnt an audience for this and I have been met with constant opposition. At one point there was talk of not even releasing a soundtrack. I fought, screamed and fought some more to get this small release we have - on Amazon, iTunes and other downloadable sites. This was a way to gauge the interest in the film. I did this to show all the nay-sayers LOOK at our numbers. Look at the reactions.


TF: You told Alternative Film Guide that Repo! was so weird, out of the box, and avant garde that people didnt know what to make of it. It sounds like getting people outside the mainstream familiar with the movie might be a challenge. How would you feel if thousands downloaded this soundtrack for free via BitTorrent but a proportion of those loved it and turned up at the theater as a paying customer?


DB: I wish it worked like this but for this film it doesnt. Thats why I had the reaction I did when I heard it was being downloaded for free. The release of Repo! is only in 6 theaters. SIX THEATERS. Even if I sold out EVERY single show - in every single city - for the entire run, it still wouldnt make the money it needs to make. Sales of the soundtrack are the only way to prove if this film registered with fans. Our hope was - the sales would be so good on the soundtrack - we would get more theaters. More screens, more showing. Repo! will not be in the majority of cities, or countries. Its only in three cities. THREE CITIES. This album was our way of showing those in charge there is an audience for this.


TF: Could you tell us about your hugely dedicated fans, the Repo! Army ?


dlb: These are the greatest fans I have ever come across - the most loyal people I think I will ever meet. These people werent hired by me. They found Repo! A good portion of the Repo! Army has seen the movie through various festivals. And the movie spoke to them. Since I dont have the support of most movies - I turn to them to help spread the word. I never realized how passionate they were until recently when they turned out in droves to Austin Texas to see a screening of Repo! They are as passionate about Repo! as your users are about file sharing.


TF: Of course, BitTorrent fans can spread the word for you too. An interesting group have been vocal in emails to TorrentFreak - the Repo! fans who are also BitTorrent users. Are you surprised that some of your fans in the Repo Army are buying your material with a passion, yet appear to be using BitTorrent too?


dlb: No, not at all. I am sure tons of people use these sites. The sad fact with Repo! is that every person who purchases the album for $9.99 is making a big statement. And these statements are going to be be the difference between Repo! playing in six theaters, or seven. To the mass population this will seem trivial - but for us, who have very little support or marketing. One paid download is huge.


TF: Thanks for speaking with us Darren, and we wish you well with the movie.


The brief storm that blew up between the opposing groups has largely died down now, after being dampened by Darrens request to his fans to stop actions against torrents. After much correspondence with Darren it seems clear to us that he never really intended to hurt BitTorrent, but acted passionately in his role as the protective father of the movie, not as some greedy corporate fat cat.


Darren told TorrentFreak that he was sorry that his actions offended some BitTorrent users, adding Just understand, we are not the studio system. We are not the major corporation. We are a group of people who have been fighting to get something made only to see it released in just 6 theaters.s not hard to see why this movie and its soundtrack has raised such passions, when years of planning, investment and dreams rest on the success of such a small release window. However, in the absence of a huge marketing investment by Lions Gate, the movie will live or die by word of mouth and magnitude of Internet .


Big named movies and albums gain less from the publicity offered by piracy than smaller productions desperate for exposure, so at least on the surface, Repo! seems an ideal candidate to benefit. It will be interesting to see how much success this movie gets, and if the piracy situation mirrors that. Hopefully, if the Repo! soundtrack does get downloaded a lot - and loved - those six theaters will be full and extended to more, which cant fail to boost Januarys DVD release.


Of course, when you rely on companies like Lions Gate to get even 6 theaters, admitting that piracy might help isnt going to go down too well.

I cant claim to be either a professional eBay user, or even a semi-professional eBay user, but I have used it quite a lot, both as a buyer, and to a lesser extent as a seller, but maybe, just maybe theres some advice in here that novices might find useful.

WHAT IS eBAY?
Well, its nowt but a damned-great car-boot sale on the internet with all that this implies. You can buy things there or sell things. Some sellers are traders, others are private. Id imagine that a larger proportion of buyers are private, unless a crafty trader sees a bargain they can sell for more later!
It carries with it, just like a car boot sale, one huge caveat -
KNOW YOUR PRICES..AND KEEP YOUR HANDS IN YOUR POCKETS
err, thats TWO HUGE caveats, sorry, I didnt expect the Spanish Inquisition.
Its very easy to assume that an open air market is cheaper than conventional retail, and the same applies here. Time and time again, people buy at markets, only to find theyve paid the bog-standard High Street price.
So many times Ive checked the Amazon price for something on eBay to find that its only a little higher than buying a possibly second-hand version of it, say a camera, on eBay.
I put this down to the fact that amateurs selling used electronics sometimes have an inflated view of the items current worth; lets say half of what they paid for it.
To be fair, this rule-of-thumb works fine for most inanimate objects with the notable exception of modern technology.
For example, the Casio 3.4 mega-pixel camera I paid £700 for, 5 years ago, is now virtually worthless, having been surpassed by even the most entry level digital cameras, some with 5 mega-pixels and price tags of £70. You need to be realistic about these things, and agree never to be an again if you dont want to get caught like this.
Then again, if an electronic item works and you have no use for it, dont wait for it to go faulty, sell it; just dont expect to get a lot for it!
In the same way as its possible to get carried away on the spur of the moment (heh, its a market, it has to be cheaper, hasnt it?), dont get caught up in the thrill of the chase and bid more than you intended just to get one up on the second highest bidder, who may, very sensibly have stuck at a level theyve researched as being worth paying.
Quite often, you, as the second highest bidder will be offered the goods at your price just because youve met some invisible ceiling price that the seller had in mind, and theyve got more than one of whatever it was you were bidding for. Anyway, it saves them the expense of re-advertising - Ill come to fees later.
This happened to me a while back. I was prepared to pay £150 and no more for a Canon Ixus 750 from the official Canon Refurbished site where shop-returns are repacked as new and guaranteed by Canon for a full year. I was outbid at the last moment by someone prepared to pay £165 but I still got the camera, warranty and all for my price because they had nine of them for sale. In this case, I was also aware that I was buying a superseded model (now the Ixus 900 Titanium), but someone buying on a whim could feel cheated when they find its not the latest item.
Dont just know your prices; know your product variants too!

Itapos;s taken me almost one year, but I"m at the halfway point of Eclipse.

It shouldnapos;t have taken me this entire year to get here, but I suffered a setback I wasnapos;t counting on. It wasnapos;t a loss of interest, but it was a definate feeling that something really important was missing. I could still tell the story, and I did, but I couldnapos;t shake the feeling that this was going to be a flop unless I figured it out.

Last week I figured it out.

Villains...true villians cannot just be "Oooh, Iapos;m evil. Iapos;m scary. Bow down to me or I will destroy you." They need a backstory. (This wasnapos;t an epiphany I had never considered before, it was simply something I came to the realization that I hadnapos;t done yet) In Morning Star, the villains have little development, because it was SUPPOSED to be that way. They took backseat to the struggles of my hero trying to figure out what was going on in the chaos around him. Now that theyapos;re taking center stage in the second installment, I had to do sometihg to bring them from Point A where they were normal people, to point B where they were bent on bloodlust. One of the things I love the most about shows like Eureka, and Battlestar Galactia are that the villains are usually a breath away from being heroes themselves...the problem lies in the execution of their plans...how they go about bringing the order they perceive to be perfection into being.

Iapos;ve done that. By going back in each chapter and giving just ONE of the five remaining villains a backstory, Iapos;ve created a sense of wonder even in myself. How did she go from being a loving mother who simply wanted to create an unending power supply to save her people from extinction, to the bloodthirsty murderer Iapos;ve presented in Book 2? It was something I never considered doing for this character, or for this series, at least...this early on. There were plans to describe the whole backstory of the villains later on, but this is so much better, so much more beautiful.

And my excitement, my need to get this story out on paper has returned. In fact, Iapos;m pissed off that I canapos;t write tomorrow I might even start using my prep period to write again, like I did towards the end of Morning Star.

Eclipse...you might just be my favorite.

As a Cleveland Browns fan, watching Pittsburgh play Baltimore is a "good news/bad news" proposition: the good news is that one of the teams will lose but the bad news is that one of the teams will win (a scoreless tie would be nice but unrealistic even for these two defensive-minded teams). Although I root against both teams, I have a confession to make: I greatly respect the Steelers' organization and I wish that the Browns would use that franchise as a template for how to build a team. The Steelers believe in playing physical football on both sides of the ball and their players are disciplined, tough and focused. The Steelers have had three head coaches during my lifetime: Chuck Noll won four Super Bowls, Bill Cowher won one Super Bowl and it would not surprise me if Mike Tomlin--who is only in his second season as Pittsburgh's head coach--wins a Super Bowl at some point. Intelligent, tough minded leadership translates into winning and that is why the Steelers are regularly a playoff team and often a Super Bowl contender. The Steelers don't panic, whine or make excuses; they just get the job done. I wish that the preceding sentences could truthfully be said about the Browns.

Pittsburgh defeated Baltimore 23-20 in overtime, the Steelers' 14th straight home victory on Monday Night Football, extending their own NFL record. This was Baltimore's fifth straight MNF loss, which is tied for the third longest active streak. The Steelers' offense looked horrible during the first half and Baltimore led 13-3 late in the third quarter. Two Steelers--including first round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall--suffered season-ending injuries during the game and the Steelers were forced to use fourth string running back Mewelde Moore but they stayed true to their formula of physical, disciplined football and turned the game around in a 15 second span. First, Ben Roethlisberger connected with Santonio Holmes for a 38 yard touchdown pass to cut Baltimore's lead to 13-10. Then, James Harrison forced Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco to fumble and LaMarr Woodley scooped up the ball and rambled seven yards into the endzone to put Pittsburgh up 17-13. Pittsburgh later extended the lead to seven before Flacco led Baltimore on a 76 yard scoring drive that culminated in a two yard Le'Ron McClain touchdown run to tie the score at 20. After stopping the Steelers, the Ravens had an opportunity to go for the win in a two minute drill situation but they elected instead to play for overtime. The Ravens won the toss but went three and out, after which the Steelers quickly moved into field goal range and Jeff Reed slid a 46 yard kick just inside the left upright.

Baltimore finished the game with more total yards (243-237), more first downs (16-11) and more time of possession (34:22-31:43) but the Ravens committed eight penalties for 72 yards while the Steelers only had five infractions for 29 yards. One penalty in particular really hurt Baltimore: Jarret Johnson committed a personal foul after an eight yard run by Nate Washington just three plays before Roethlisberger's touchdown pass to Holmes. The Steelers had not done much on offense up to that point but those big 15 yards tacked on to the end of the run gave them some momentum and put them in scoring range.

ESPN's Monday Night Countdown show focused on a lot of nonsense but while we are drowning in an ocean of hype and biased commentary, Steve Young provides an oasis of rational analysis. Prior to the game, Stuart Scott tried to hype up the so-called bulletin board material that Steelers running back Mendenhall supposedly provided by sending a text message to his friend, Ravens running back Ray Rice, who promptly revealed the contents of the message to the rest of the Ravens. When Scott asked what Mendenhall should learn from this, Young rightly dismissed the whole issue as a non-story, declaring, "I'll tell you what he found out: that Ray Rice is not his friend. That's what he found out. He didn't say this to the press. He didn't say it to the media. He said it to his buddy in a text message, which can be all kinds of hyperbole that they do between friends. To have your friend send it to Ray Lewis seems a little bit over the top." Scott interjected, "But why take the chance?" Young responded, "Who cares? It's just between friends. It's just for fun. Like he said, 'I would never say that publicly.' Of course he wouldn't, because he's not that stupid. Here's the bottom line, though: I always laughed at teams that would say, 'Steve, we're going to really try to kill you this week.' Really? It's the NFL; it's the fastest game in the history of sports. You can't be any faster; you can't want it any more. Everybody is paid a bunch of money. All this bulletin board stuff, I think, is college stuff. Pro football, especially the Ravens, they are going to come 100,000 miles an hour (anyway). It doesn't matter."

Steve Young is right. Talk doesn't matter. Hype doesn't matter. The Steelers are just a little tougher and a little smarter and that is why they beat the Ravens and took over first place in the AFC North. If Ray Lewis needs some text message from a rookie to get hyped up for a game then he is not as tough or smart as he wants everyone to think that he is. Pittsburgh has made the playoffs in three of the previous four seasons and won one Super Bowl during that stretch, while Baltimore has made the playoffs just once in the past four years, so anyone who knows that history is not surprised that Pittsburgh found a way to win this game. Mendenhall's comments had nothing to do with the outcome of the game.

Here are some notes/comments about Sunday's action:

This was not the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl or even the Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl. No, it was the Ineptitude Bowl, hosted by the winless Cincinnati Bengals and won 20-12 by the previously winless Cleveland Browns. With apologies to Gene Rayburn and "The Match Game," "How inept was it?" It was so inept that the teams combined for 15 penalties (nine by Cleveland, six by Cincinnati) and seven turnovers (two by Cleveland, five by Cincinnati). At the end of the game, the Browns received a delay of game penalty when they could not figure out how to get the right 11 players on the field to go into "victory formation" for a kneel down; to be fair, this is not a formation that the Browns have used very often recently. One play epitomized the mutual ineptitude that characterized this contest: late in the first half, Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick--playing in place of injured starter Carson Palmer--was intercepted by Eric Wright, who apparently thought that this was his opportunity to showcase his open field running skills and ability to choreograph blocking schemes; while Wright ran around and gestured to indicate what his blockers should do, Cincinnati running back Chris Perry rocked his world and knocked the ball loose. Chad Loco Cinco (who was a non-factor with just three catches for 28 yards, though he did catch his first TD of the season) recovered for the Bengals at the Cleveland 45 yard line for a gain of five yards and a first down. Cincinnati then advanced the ball 17 yards in seven plays to kick a field goal to take a 6-3 halftime lead. The Browns scored two third quarter touchdowns and then hung on for dear life to avoid falling into the AFC North cellar.

Browns' fans continue to call for quarterback Derek Anderson's head. Granted, Anderson has hardly distinguished himself this season but last year he was 10-5 as a starter and was selected to the Pro Bowl. He had the best season that a Browns quarterback has had since Bernie Kosar was in his prime. Anderson has the necessary physical tools to be a top of the line NFL quarterback. Yes, he needs to improve his decision making and his accuracy but if you carefully examine NFL history you will find that many championship-winning quarterbacks struggled to some extent before putting everything together. Eli Manning is a good example of this. I'm not saying that Anderson will definitely become a championship-winning quarterback but it is silly and counterproductive to focus so much wrath at him when the Browns are underperforming in so many other areas. Anderson struggled in the first half against the Bengals but in the second half he made some nice throws and led the team on the scoring drives that won the game. Roethlisberger did not look great for much of the game against Baltimore but he got it done when it counted. John Elway used to do that, too; think about it: you don't set records for fourth quarter comebacks unless you made some mistakes earlier in the game to fall behind in the first place. The thing that I hate most about the Browns' quarterback controversy is that it seems like some Cleveland fans are rooting against Anderson just so that they can crow about being "right" that Brady Quinn should be the starter. I want to see the Browns win and I would never root against the team's starting quarterback, whoever he may be. The Browns need to get everyone healthy and back on the field and then they can more fairly evaluate Anderson's performance. Right now, all that can honestly be said is that Anderson can make some throws that few other NFL quarterbacks can make but there are still some rough edges to his game that need to be smoothed out. By the way, Terry Bradshaw did not throw more touchdowns than interceptions in a season until his sixth season and he ended up leading Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl titles. The Browns have done a pretty good job of providing players and/or coaches for Super Bowl winning teams in the past two decades (Earnest Byner, Keenan McCardell, Matt Stover are just three of 59 former Browns who have participated in the Super Bowl since Tony Grossi became the Plain Dealer's beat writer for the Browns in the 1980s), so before they cast Anderson aside they better be sure that he is not going to be the next Jim Plunkett (a so-called bust for New England and San Francisco in the 1970s who led the Raiders to two Super Bowl wins).

The Washington Redskins earned an impressive 26-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas as Jim Zorn became the first Washington coach since George Allen to win his first game in Texas Stadium. Naturally, whenever Dallas loses the "experts" look for excuses to either blame Terrell Owens or assert that Owens is "selfish." Owens finished with seven receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown, plus two rushes for 11 yards. As usual, Owens not only made plays but he attracted extra defensive attention that opened up opportunities for his teammates. Dallas' problem was not on offense--the Cowboys gained 344 yards and converted six of 12 third down plays--but rather on defense: the Redskins gained 381 yards and controlled the ball for 38:09. Clearly, when the Cowboys had the ball they were productive but their defense was not able to get enough stops. Yet, instead of speaking this simple truth, the Monday Night Countdown crew devoted a whole segment to nothing but bashing Owens. Tom Jackson and Chris Berman both said that they have "read this book before and know how it ends," suggesting that Owens will soon be feuding with quarterback Tony Romo. This echoed an earlier Trent Dilfer lament that instead of talking about how well Washington played they were forced to discuss Owens. Guess what, Trent? No one is forcing you to do anything. You are one cog in the machine that calls itself the "Worldwide Leader" and you and that machine can focus your massive resources on whatever you choose to talk about, so nothing is stopping you from devoting a whole segment to what Washington did well as opposed to what Owens is supposedly doing wrong.

Isn't it interesting how Jackson and Cris Carter spent the first month of the season campaigning for the Jets to open up their offense and throw the ball more to take advantage of Brett Favre's talents but they think that it is a bad thing that Owens wants the Cowboys to open up their offense to take advantage of his skills? Owens has more touchdown receptions than anyone in NFL history other than Jerry Rice and the Romo-Owens tandem has produced more TD receptions than any other duo in the league since Romo became a starter. The bottom line is that the Cowboys should have Owens run the deep routes that he wants to run and that when he is single-covered or beats the defense Romo should throw him the ball, whether that is five times a game or 25 times a game; if the defense reacts by double-teaming Owens, then Romo should go elsewhere--but the onus is then on Romo and whoever is "elsewhere" to be productive. Berman, Jackson and the others on the Monday Night Countdown set made a big deal that 19 or 20 of the Cowboys' offensive plays versus Washington involved Owens but that number is meaningless without context. What really matters is how many times Owens was open, how many of those times he got the ball and how productive he was. If Romo threw Owens the ball when Owens was not open, that is not Owens' fault. Owens has said all along that he doesn't care how often he gets the ball as long as the team is winning, so if someone else is open then Romo should throw that guy the ball and keep the chains moving. Owens is not saying that the Cowboys should force the ball to him; he is saying that he wants to run certain routes so that he can get open more easily against the way defenses are covering him, thus enabling him to make more plays. Why is that a bad thing? How is that any different than the Jets opening things up to take advantage of Favre's arm strength? Why is Favre everyone's hero but everyone thinks that it is OK to crap on Owens night and day? I would not suggest that I know more about football than the former Pro Bowl players on the Monday Night Countdown set, so one is forced to assume that at some level they know that what they are saying is not true; they go after Owens either for reasons of personal animus or because the show's producers think that controversy makes for better, more entertaining television. Owens is not perfect--no one is--but you cannot convince me that he deserves even a fraction of the negative coverage that he receives.

Also, who the hell is Keyshawn Johnson to say that if the ball were thrown to him 20 times he'd make 20 catches and his team would win? Johnson also repeatedly said that Owens does not care about winning. The truth is that Owens owns the NFL single game reception record with 20, while Johnson was never the deep threat or reliable scoring option that Owens is, so the only place that Johnson is catching 20 balls is in his overactive imagination. Owens worked hard to rehab a broken ankle and was arguably the best player on the field during Super Bowl XXXIX, catching nine passes for 122 yards as his Philadelphia Eagles lost to the New England Patriots 24-21 as Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb ran out of gas down the stretch. Johnson did play on a Super Bowl championship team in 2002 with Tampa Bay but midway through the next season he was the third leading receiver on the squad when Coach Jon Gruden suspended him for the rest of the season for conduct detrimental to the team. Based on skill set and attitude, Johnson is quite possibly the last person on Earth who should ever open his mouth to comment about Owens' abilities, work ethic or commitment to winning. As for Cris Carter, unlike Johnson he was a great player but it is a little tiresome to hear Carter lecture Owens about character and commitment. Carter is a former drug addict whose off field problems came close to ruining his career; I give Carter all the credit in the world for straightening his life out but as far as we know Owens has never been in trouble with the law and he has always worked extremely hard to develop his God-given talents to the fullest. Owens is a self-made man who should be admired for his work ethic and dedication. Maybe he has not always said the right things but he has always done the right things on and off the field to be the most productive football player he can be. Give me a locker room full of guys like that and I'd gladly go to battle fully expecting to contend for a Super Bowl title every year. One of the reasons that Bill Belichick is so successful is that he ignores what the media says about players and he makes his own judgments. According to the media, Corey Dillon was supposedly a bad guy, a malcontent, but Belichick recognized that Dillon was just frustrated by the unprofessional atmosphere in Cincinnati (as opposed to one of ESPN's favorite receivers, Loco Cinco, who is a major factor in why that atmosphere is still unprofessional) and Dillon went on to be a major contributor to New England's Super Bowl winning team in the 2004 season. I guarantee you that Belichick would sign Owens in a heartbeat if Owens were available.

Isn't it amazing that the same guys who are killing Owens have nothing but good things to say about Steve Smith, a player who on two separate occasions assaulted one of his teammates? Smith has serious anger management issues and he should either be in jail or at the very least be receiving appropriate counseling but instead he is back on the field and the ESPN guys are falling over themselves to praise Smith because after he scored a touchdown he gave the ball to his most recent assault victim, Ken Lucas. If one of your co-workers broke your nose but he gave you a souvenir would you feel satisfied? Would you think that this gesture proved that he was a great guy? What hurts a team more: asking that the offensive game plan fully utilize your abilities or injuring a starting player on your own team and getting suspended? I'd love to hear the full version of what questions Owens was actually asked and the full version of his answers, because a classic mainstream media propaganda technique involves "creative" editing of soundbites; it "works" for everyone from "60 Minutes" to "SportsCenter."

This weekend was sheer heaven for ESPN's crew because they not only seized the opportunity to create a Terrell Owens controversy out of thin air but Brett Favre had a performance for the ages, throwing a career-high six touchdown passes (he had five TDs in a game on three previous occasions, most recently in 1998) as the New York Jets defeated the Arizona Cardinals 56-35. Favre had been hobbled during the week by a left ankle injury but he once again showcased his amazing durability and proved that he still has a lot of ammunition left in his rocket arm. Favre's Arizona counterpart, Kurt Warner, helped out the Jets with a schizophrenic performance that included 472 passing yards, two touchdowns--and six (!) turnovers: three interceptions and three fumbles lost (Warner fumbled a fourth time but Arizona retained possession). Favre rightly cautioned that after this win the Jets should not start printing up playoff tickets or Super Bowl tickets; he understands that Arizona has historically been a horrible road team--particularly on the East Coast--and that you cannot count on forcing seven turnovers (Anquan Boldin lost a fumble in addition to Warner's miscues) every week. The Jets' defense is leaky--giving up 35 second half points--and it remains to be seen if New York can beat high quality, tough minded teams. Nevertheless, when a soon to be 39 year old future Hall of Famer like Favre can add yet another line to his personal record book that is impressive, even if all of ESPN's crowing about Favre is going to look silly by the end of the season when the Jets don't make the playoffs.

3. Backswing and Downswing Fundamentals
There seems to be a lot of confusion for players concerning an understanding of backswing and downswing. Simply put the downswing is designed to create club momentum at the ball. This is accomplished with your arms swinging in one full motion. Resist the desire to do this with your hands or wrists.
The concept of the backswing has different mechanics than the downswing. The backswing should be slower than the downswing but just as powerful. Always keep in mind your downswing should be 25 to 35% faster than your backswing. Once again this is brought out in practicing your swing.
4. Its All In The Motion
During the backswings motion your left shoulder and hips need to be in correct alignment as your weight is transfered to the right. Of course for left handers this is exactly the opposite.
