Is It Basketball Season Yet

It has been awhile since I posted here so I thought I would give a couple quick updates:

-Chris Braswell (ranked #84 in Rivals) is a power forward from Maryland who will be on campus with Kevin Parrom next weekend. I feel there is a commitment to be had by both. Ari Stewart is leaning more towards Oregon and I am sure Ernie Kent will have him talk to Churchill Odia while he is on their campus.

-Drew Lavender and Anthony Myles (after an All Star season in China Pro League) will be teaming up for Hyeres Toulon Var Basket of the French Pro A League this season. Duncan plays for Elan Bearnais Pau-Orthez with former Oklahoma State player JamesOn Curry and Justin Doellman will be playing another season for Besancon Basket Comte Doubs. You have to love the names of these teams. And it is good to see some former Muskies making good coin at the pro game. Stan will be playing in Bosnia and Romain will be joining the Italian team he helped win the championship with in the Premier EuroLeague. I have heard coach Miller said Romain can make far more money playing across the pond than he could being the 13th man on some NBA roster.

-The schedule needs to be applauded in my mind. We should have some bumps early on with our young guards but by the time conference play rolls around I feel we should be hitting on all cylinders.

-Adrion Graves did end up transferring to Bowling Green. He reportedly also had offers from Toledo and Detroit Mercy.

For the ten plus years that I have coached I have always been a program coach.  This simply means that I dont just focus on one seasonI build a program from the elementary up.  We will not have a basketball program that is up and down, year after year.  Our program will not depend upon transfers.  David McGoron is an exception to that rule.  Otherwise we will build our program from CCS kids.  Starting with the great job our CYO coaches are doing, through the middle school to our Freshman and JV teams.  Once we OUR kids reach the varsity they will will have been groomed to move right into the varsity program.
We want our CYO coaches to focus on teaching our kids the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive posture.  That will enable our 7th grade coach to boost the same fundamentals to a higher level.  This will provide our the foundaton for our 8th grade coach to begin introducing the very basics of our system and style of play.
Once these kids reach the Freshman team they will be prepared to run the basics of our offense and get a taste of the intensity of our man to man defense.  By the time these young men get to the JV they will be prepared to run our complete offensive system.  Many will have at least one year in the JV as Sophomores but that will depend upon their ability.  I want our players to play, not sit on the end of the bench and see the floor only 3 minutes a game.  T
During all the years preceding these players making the Varsity squad their objective is to prepare for the Varsity squad.  Every practice, every game is designed to make that transition possible.  The varsity is the Big Show.  All of our teams will win, but winning will not be the priority the priority will be   We will win Conference championships at each level, but winning championships as Freshman or JV is not the priority the priority is laying a solid foundation for a program that will consistently produce a winning teams.
I want our boys to play college basketball if that is their desire.  This type of program will enhance thier chances.  I am asking for your TRUST.  I want every player to be successful.  Trust meknow that you may not agree with every decision I make.  No one agrees with every decision coaches make especially regarding playing time or on which team they are chosen to play on.
We have a very tough schedule this year.  Our second game is with Lockland who just picked up a new coach who brought with him four players from Aiken.  They will be strong.  North college Hills has picked up a couple of strong players.  This will not be the conference we saw last year.  But as i told our boys they can only put five guys on the floor at a time and I will put our best five against any in the state.
I will put fifteen players on the Varsity team roster but will dress only 10.  There are seven or eight spots which will be locked the other two will be determined by the effort in practice preceding the game.
The Freshman will play Freshman ball and rarely play JV.  Again, we will put fifteen boys on the roster.  If there are a few Freshman that can play JV then we will carefully look at it.  But their first responsibility will be to the Freshman team.  There will be only once exception to this rule.  Jordan Eiras will play primarily Varsity.  Jordan started on the JV team as an eighth grader (in Florida 8th Graders can play high school ball) and was very effective.  He had an opportunity to prove himself during the summers shoot-outs where in one game he had 17 points against a division I team.  But he will be the only exception.
We have a very, very TALENTED group of Freshman.  They are going to be the heart of our program next year.  I expect at least three of these boys to go straight to Varsity.  So, as freshman parents, please be patient during this year.  These boys are going to be in a winning program.  as an eight grader for his Floridas school as a  JV guard at his last school and will play some JV but will fit better within our Varsity program.  In the decade that I have coached I have only had one other Freshman on the varsitythat boy went on to play Division I basketball at Alabama.
Determining a players potential and enabling him to maximize that potential is the challenge of any coach. Along with that is acknowledging their limitations. The most rewarding aspect of coaching is helping a player channel his passion and gifts in a constructive manner bringing honor to the Lord in the process.
The most difficult aspect of coaching is recognizing a players limitations but trying to help them find their place on a team. There are players that play a great deal of the time and some who are considered players. These players can step onto the floor and give immediate offense, they have a gifted shot and can calmly walk onto the floor and take the open shot and hit it. Then once the boost is given take his place on the bench without a grumble or complaint. There is that defensive specialist that can build a wall between an offensive player and the goal. These players walk onto the floor stop the man offensively for as long as needed and return to the bench again without complaint.
The major players will see 80% of the playing time. For me, I have that is accomplished through a seven to eight man rotation. Although we will certainly not paint ourselves into a corner.
We have all the components. We have six or seven players that could find their way into the starting lineup and at the same time we have several who can fill those specialty roles.
Our games thus for have been very impressive. I believe that we have a team that will be a challenge for any team we play. I do not expect to see teams like Wayne, Fairmont or Thurgood Marshall in our conference or region. If our boys stay focused, stay healthy and work hard, we are going to see some serious wins.

OK, make sure you have plenty of water, and dress in layers. We're going to the desert! (and Flagstaff).

2008 Breakdown

State winning percentage: .610
Number of teams: 3
NCAA Tournament teams: Arizona
Conference champions: None
Most wins: Arizona State, Northern Arizona (21)
Least wins: Arizona (19)
Teams with winning records: All three, baby.
Teams with single digit wins: None

Historical breakdown

Most Memorable Team: 1997's National Championship Arizona squad was mighty impressive, even if they caused me some personal heartache. Coming in as a #4 seed, the Wildcats got through the first weekend with easy wins over South Alabama and Charleston. The next weekend got interesting, as #1 seed Kansas went down in the Sweet 16 (ouch), then #10 Providence. Lute took his squad to the promised land by beating two more #1s, first downing North Carolina, and then taking Kentucky to OT before winning 84-79.

Top Player All-Time: Within Arizona alone, there are several possible picks, so I'm going with the guy with the most collegiate hardware, as well as the guy I have a personal appreciation for: Sean Elliott. The mobile big man was Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 1986, and took home conference POY in '88 and '89 as well. He also won the Wooden Award in his senior season.

Favorite Coach: We like Lute, really, we do. But in this case, we have to defer to one of our correspondents again. Mike White's hard-hitting investigative journalism in the "Dark Secrets of College Basketball" series has awakened us to the devious genius that is Herb Sendek. Beneath that dour exterior lurks the next Larry Eustachy, we just know it. We'd throw in something nice about Northern Arizona's Mike Adras, but we probably couldn't pick him out of a lineup at this point.

Top Player 2008: Plenty of candidates. Northern Arizona senior Kyle Landry had some great games. The Sun Devils have a strong foundation for this season with Pendergraph and Harden, both of whom were spotty at times last year. Which brings us back to the Wildcats. Budinger and Hill were sort of a big-man yin and yang, with neither player carrying the load every night. Jerryd Bayless is our man, able to put up big nights scoring, dishing, and even rebounding when called upon.

Best On-Campus Venue: We're going to throw a curveball at you, here. The J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff has to be the coolest. The roof is made of wood, which seems appropriate for a team named the Lumberjacks. No disrespect to our Pac-10 worthies, but that's pretty awesome.

Georgatos visited Harvard two weeks ago and also visited Cornell this past weekend. He told Rivals.com that he saw all that he needed to see and decided now was the perfect time to pull the trigger. "[Coach Tommy Amaker] really stressed a lot of player development. He said he doesn't want his big men to be one dimensional," Georgatos said. "He wants me to come in and work at getting better and being a player that wants to work hard." Georgatos added about Coach Amaker, "He knows how hard of a task it is with building a program. It is a big deal and I've been really impressed with how he wants to change things. I've been sold on that." Georgatos also said that Coach Amaker, "stressed the idea that they need to bring a new level of player there. He wants to find guys that value the education that Harvard has but also take basketball very seriously."

"I had official visits set to Harvard, Cornell, and Penn, and a couple of nights ago the Penn coach called me to say that they were going with another kid that was ready to commit. I felt like I had seen everything I needed to see and felt that Harvard was the best choice," Georgatos told TexasHoops.com.

"As a school, it doesn't get much better than Harvard," Georgatos said. "And Coach (Tommy) Amaker has really been in contact with me from the beginning and has shared his vision for them with me. It's something I want to be a part of."

"I spent a lot of time with my host; he's the senior captain and he's a really great guy," Georgatos told TexasHoops.com. "I met and played with all the players too. Coach Amaker is very enthusiastic in everything he wants to accomplish with the program and there's really a sense of building something up there."

How does Georgatos specifically fit into the plan? "Something he's talked about with me is my versatility - he doesn't want to have one-dimensional players," Georgatos said. "He stresses player development and that's very important to me. I want to see myself improve and get myself ready to do that.

Being culturally relevant is critical for any and all outreach efforts. Through the vehicle of sports, Upward trains and provides tools to help your church make an impact in the lives of children in your community. An Upward league gives individuals in your congregation a chance to contribute in bringing others closer to our Lord and Savior through sports. Your church members would have the opportunity to serve as commissioners, coaches, referees, or prayer partners. Through Upward, the combined efforts of all volunteers lead to accomplishing one mission: Introducing children to Jesus Christ by creating opportunities to serve through sports.

Starting this fall children grades K5 though 6th grade will have the opportunity to participate in Upward basketball here at Mountain Creek! We will be joining four other churches in our area. Upward is an evangelistic sports ministry specifically designed for K5 through sixth grade boys and girls that promotes salvation, character and self-esteem in every child. Started in Spartanburg in 1986, Upward sports ministry has over grown to reach over 490,000 children who are participating in basketball, soccer, flag football, and cheerleading. Upwards mission is to introduce children to Jesus Christ by creating opportunities to serve through sports.

Upward has four values:
1. The Expectation of God-Moments
2. The Life of Integrity
3. The Discipline of Excellence
4. The Priority of Children

Children who participate in Upward basketball receive a reversible jersey, t-shirt, magazine, a car magnet and an end of the season award. Children who participate in Upward Cheerleading receive a cheer top, skorts, a mockturtle neck, magazine, pom-poms, megaphone, a car magnet and an end of the year award. The cost for either basketball or cheerleading is $65.00.

One thing that makes Upward so great is that children will get equal playing time each Saturday. Every child will play at least half the game. Practices will be one night a week and will be determined when the season starts. There are three evaluation/orientation days planned:

Monday, October 13th,
Tuesday, October 14th,
Thursday, October 16th.

Each child participating in either basketball or cheerleading must attend ONE of these evaluations/orietations. Evaluations and orientations will be held at Greenville First Assembly of God from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on the dates mentioned above. This evaluation/orientation process makes sure that boys and girls are placed on teams that are equally divided according to ability. For more information contact the church office or visit http://www.upward.org/

The season starts on Saturday, December 6th and runs through February 14th.

nba fantasy basketball draft: my picks

for people who want to know what it's like to be an nba team owner, a fantasy league is the closest answer. and with me following nba news so much, i once again signed up for a new team over at CBS Sports.draft day came and this is what i got for the 2008-09 nba fantasy basketball season:

1. chris paul (g)- i could have picked lebron over cp3 since i had the first pick in the draft. but, since it's a head-to-head league where assists are worth two points, i assumed that chris paul's mad passing skills would overcome james' rebounding numbers. plus, chris paul is the main reason why i won the championship in our league last year so i want an encore. hehe

2. jose calderon (g)- last year, i picked up calderon from the waivers and his assists numbers was so impressive that i just had to take him back, even if it means grabbing him while tim duncan, chris bosh, chris kaman, and rudy gay are still on the board. i just hope that calderon's ankle would heal properly.

3. greg oden (c)- with dwight howard, amare stoudemire, and al jefferson gone, i settled for greg oden although (as stated above) chris kaman, and pau gasol are still on the board. i'm still nervous about this pick since portland's got a very talented lineup with brandon roy and lamarcus aldridge so oden might not get a lot of shots in his first year. on the flipside, oden could be a monster on the boards and although projected to have about 12 points and 8 rebounds in his first year, i think he can grab a 20-10 on some nights.

4. lamarcus aldridge (f)- i was surprised to see aldridge still on the boards in the fourth round. being in need of a forward, i drafted him immediately. lamarcus was good last year and could only get better. my only concern about him albeit a small one is if greg oden plays like an all-star it would mean less touches for aldridge. if that happens then, i still have oden. haha

5. al thornton (f)- the sophomore from the clippers may have been flying under the radar of other team owners since i still got him in the fifth round. last year, he was inconsistent but when he's on fire, he's really on fire. thornton is another guy along with paul and calderon i had in my lineup last year and i think he will get better this season as brand is gone and he should get more minutes this season than tim thomas. i'm also counting on him being baron davis' stephen jackson on the clippers.

6. john salmons (g)- last year, i also picked up salmons from the waivers and boy he delivered. without bibby, martin, and artest early last season, salmons showed he can ball with the best of them. with the return of martin, his playing time was reduced and he was no longer as productive as early in the season. so why did i draft salmons when martin is still with the kings? well, artest is gone and that could mean more playing time for salmons.

7. ramon sessions (g)- ramon who? sure, kevin martin, manu ginobili, monta ellis, al horford, and gilbert arenas were still available in the seventh round but i just had to have sessions, he played amazing basketball towards the end of last season for the bucks which caught my attention. with mo williams now with the cavs, sessions would only have to beat luke ridnour for the starting job in milwaukee.

8. rudy fernandez (g)- with four guards, a center and two forwards, you might think that i would have gone for a center or a forward for my eighth pick. but i did not pick andrei kirilenko (even though he was part of my last year's team), boris diaw, nor jamario moon but drafted portland's rudy fernandez. why? i think he's good and ready for the nba. while brandon roy would have to be the blazers' go-to-guy, i think rudy can be a really good addition to any team especially the talented-laden blazers team. with aldridge down low, i think rudy can rack up a lot of assists for the team.

9. kenyon martin (f)- sure he's 30 and has been on the operating table alot but he's not done. with marcus camby out of denver, who would fill in the rebounding void for the nuggets? nene? i don't really think so. k-mart will be the one. add to that the fact that kenyon martin can really score.

10. francisco garcia (f)- needing a forward, i searched down the list for any good forwards left. i noticed garcia and for the reason that artest will no longer be donning the kings jersey this coming season, i drafted the guy. i had garcia on the team last year and he was good when given the minutes so i'm counting on him to be better this season.

11. kevin love (f)- while some people think that love does not have an nba-ready body, i think he can thrive in minnesota with al jefferson. sure, al would have the most touches but don't count out love and his mid-range shooting. it might be even possible that he will get the starting job of center while al jefferson slides to power forward. that would mean a couple of blocks or so a game and more rebounds.

12. antonio mcdyess (f)- the diceman was part of my original lineup last season but i had to let him go to clear space. i can't remember who i got after i dumped mcdyess but it might have been shaq. but i do remember that i regret letting this guy go after posting good numbers last season. this year, he's once again on my reserve list and i'm thinking about lettting him go again if that was the reason why i won last year (hehehe), or keep him so i don't regret letting him go again (more hehe).

13. andrea bargnani (c)- without a reserved center (kevin love still does not count), i had to pick bargnani. his upside: he could be playing small forward this season which means more playing time since jermaine o'neal would surely start as center. i just hope that this season will be the breakout year for this number 1 draft pick in 2006.

so that's it for my lineup. do you think it's any good? do i need to trade someone away? am i right in taking chris paul over lebron james? was the ramon sessions decision any good? or is it plain dumb? hehehe. is rudy fernandez ready for the nba to help portland and my fantasy team? please, i'm running out of questions here, so any feedback would do.

ZEBULON, N.C. - State Auditor Leslie Merritt, who is seeking re-election in November, announced today that former N.C. State basketball star Todd Fuller of Charlotte will serve as Chairman of Young Professionals for Merritt. Auditor Merritt previously announced that his two adult children would serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of Young Professionals for Merritt.
Fuller, a first-round NBA draft pick in 1996, played in the NBA for five years and played on professional teams in Spain, Poland, Greece and Australia over the course of six seasons. He sponsors an annual mathematics competition, the Todd Fuller Math Competition, for Raleigh-area high school students through his alma mater. Fuller has also established a scholarship fund through the NCSU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS). NCSU honored Fuller by hanging his number 52 jersey from the roof of the RBC Center in during a halftime ceremony of the Red-White basketball scrimmage game on October 27, 2007. Fuller, who is now a licensed private pilot, lives in Charlotte with his wife, Libby.
State Auditor Leslie Merritt has exposed countless instances of fraud, waste and abuse in state government, said Fuller. As a young professional who plans to live in North Carolina for many years to come, I am grateful for his efforts to ensure that state government spends our tax dollars wisely. I encourage other young professionals to join me in voting to re-elect Auditor Merritt in November.
State Auditor Leslie Merritt, The Taxpayers Watchdog, was elected in 2004 when he defeated a three-term incumbent. He is the first Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to serve as North Carolinas State Auditor. Merritt, a native and lifelong resident of North Carolina, was raised on a farm in rural Sampson County between Clinton and Magnolia. He earned degrees in both Economics and Accounting from North Carolina State University. Prior to being elected State Auditor, Leslie Merritt owned and operated a small business for over twenty years and has been a CPA for 27 years. He was elected to the Wake County Board of Commissioners in 1994. During his time as a County Commissioner he developed a reputation as a voice of fiscal responsibility, fighting to set priorities and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of county government. Leslie Merritt served as president of the Zebulon Elementary School PTA, the Zebulon Rotary Club and the Zebulon Lions Club. He has also served as a director with the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce. Leslie Merritt and his wife of 31 years, Cheryl, are members of Zebulon Baptist Church. They have two adult children. For more information, visit www.auditormerritt.com.

Grassroots Canada is one of the best AAU programs in the world. At this point, calling a team the best in America is not enough, as the program from north of the border can compete with America's best. Yes, Junior Cadougan '09 of Christian Life Center (TX) may have been the first Canadian to enter the grassroots scene in a major way, but Tristan Thompson '10 has taken it by storm. The St. Benedict's (NJ) star may be in a lower grade than fellow Canadians Cadougan and Christian Kabongo '09 of Mt. Zion Christian Academy (NC), but is certainly the biggest name. I spoke with Thompson, a 6'9 power forward who is committed to Texas, after the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic at Rucker Park in Harlem, New York.
NB: What went into your decision to commit to Texas?
TT: It was just a great spot for me. [When] I went on my visit it felt like a second home. Compared to others school [where] when I went [to them] it was like, ‘ahh, I like the school,’ but when I went to Texas it . . . just felt like another home and it [was] the best place for me.
NB: Were you always planning on committing at . . . an early age, [during] your sophomore year?
TT: Yeah, I was really planning on committing early because I wanted to get the recruiting process out of the way . . . so then I could focus on my school [work] and academics.
NB: How important are academics to you?
TT: Well, [when] my mom [raised] . . . me . . . she said, ‘academics first before basketball because when basketball’s over . . . you’ll [be able to] fall [back] on your academics,’ so she said, ‘academics first.’
NB: What was it like for you last year playing under Gregory Echenique and Samardo Samuels? [You] might not have gotten as much playing time as you [would have] liked. What do you take away from that?
TT: It was just [a good way for me to] learn how to be a role player, learn how you can score in other ways instead of getting the ball to you. You can score off offensive rebounds, run the floor, different ways of scored, which helped my game.
NB: Where’s all this talent in Canada coming from? There’s so many top-notch players . . . coming from Canada: you, Myck [Kabongo, and] Junior [Cadougan], all these guys.
TT: Well, it’s coming from our [Grassroots Canada AAU] coach Will Russell. He’s been developing guys in the gym and he’s been working hard. He’s a big-time coach and he’s the greatest.
NB: Who’s the best player [from] the country of Canada [in high school right now]?
TT: [Laughs] Besides me it’s Junior Cadougan.
NB: What about including you?
TT: Including me, then it’s me and Junior Cadougan.
NB: What’s this experience been like for you at the Elite 24 [Classic]?
TT: It’s been a great experience, I just loved it. [It took place at] Rucker Park, [is a] monument. So, I just enjoyed playing and was happy to be here.
NB: What do you see as the strongest point and the weakest point in your game?
TT: Well, the strongest point in my game is just always playing hard, just never giving up, [and] just always trying to play hard. The weakest part of me game is just [everything]. I [have] got to work on everything. . . . Nothing’s perfect so I can better on everything until I master that.
NB: Who’s the best player in the class of 2010?
TT: I don’t know, I don’t know. We’re all good. . . . Everyone’s talented in our class, so . . . ten of us [are] tied for first.
Although Tristan Thompson struggled at the Elite 24 Classic, it's evident that he has a lot of potential. Once he begins to bulk up he could be scary, and if he keeps growing, he could be downright frightening. Tristan has a lot on his shoulders, as he is one of a handful of players leading the surge of Canadian talent. Yes, players such as Steve Nash have already gotten to the NBA and starred coming from Canada, but the nation is still by no means known for its play in the hardwood. Thompson is one of the ballers looking to make a dent in the grassroots circuit on a major level, pushing his nation into the spotlight. Tristan Thompson may not be from the United States, but Americans may well be able to enjoy watching him play for quite some time.

Former high school teammates Donald Sloan and Derrick Roland were billed as Texas AMs backcourt of the future. When they signed with the Aggies three years ago. They will get their chance to show why this season.
Sloan will slide from the wing to the point to replace four-year starter Dominique Kirk. Sloan, whose strength is attacking off the dribble, has a scorers mentality. But he can be more of a playmaker when needed. He played quite a bit at point in the latter stages of last season and dished out six assists in the Aggies first-round NCAA Tournament win over BYU.
Roland will move into a starting role after emerging as a reliable contributor off the bench. The Aggies need Roland to look for his shot more and become a steady scoring threat.
The return of veteran swingman Josh Carter, who flirted briefly with the idea of leaving school early, gives the Aggies an experienced leader and one of the top outside shooters in the Big 12. Entering his fourth year as a starter, Carter has shot 42.5 percent (222 of 522) from 3-point range over the course of his career. The Aggies want Carter to diversify his offensive game by putting the ball on the floor and attacking the basket more. Hell also be needed to help rebound.
Freshman Dashan Harris likely will be one of the first players off the bench. A top-100 prospect, Harris is the Aggies point guard of the future. The Aggies lack depth on the wings, which means Roland and Carter must be prepared to play heavy minutes.
FRONTCOURT
The loss of four-year starter Joseph Jones and 7-footer DeAndre Jordan, who was taken in the second round of the NBA Draft, leaves the Aggies relatively thin on the inside.
Junior power forward Bryan Davis is the only post player back with any starting experience, and senior center Chinemelu Elonu is the only one with any other significant playing experience.
Fortunately for the Aggies, Davis was one of the Big 12s most improved players last season. After seeing limited action in his first year, Davis proved to be a major piece of the team, ranking fourth in scoring (8.7 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.9 rpg). With more opportunities, hell likely raise those numbers into the 12-14 points per game and 6-8 rebounds per game range.
Elonu, who averaged 9.3 minutes last season, is a project, but has good athleticism and size. The Aggies are hoping the fourth-year junior can develop into a great shot-blocker in the middle of their defense.
Freshman David Loubeau will provide immediate help. Ranked the No. 63 power forward in the 2008 class, Lobeau has a good skill set and a great motor. He could work his way into the starting lineup.
OFFENSE
Turgeon didnt tinker much with the offense last season, keeping a motion attack based on balance and patience. That will remain the focus, but with Jordan and Jones gone, the Aggies will look to run more. Sloans ability to penetrate and create is pivotal.
DEFENSE
The Aggies will use man-to-man as much as possible. Last season, it was the backbone of a defense that gave up the third-fewest points (61.6 per game) in the Big 12.
SHOES TO FILL
Jones and Kirk. Losing Jordan early to the NBA isnt as detrimental as losing either Kirk or Jones. Both were far more reliable. Kirk was one of the top defenders in the Big 12, and Jones was the teams top inside scoring threat. Their leadership and experience were underrated.
MUST STEP UP
Elonu. The Aggies have brought Elonu along slowly, but there is no more time for patience. The guards, along with Davis, can carry the offense. But AM needs Elonu for rebounding and defense.
IMPACT NEWCOMER
Harris and Loubeau. Turgeon and his staff won big recruiting battles to land both of these four-star prospects.

Hassard is an all-state discus thrower with a personal best of 156-feet, 8-inches, while Thomas will compete in the discus and shot put events.

On the womens side, New York State standouts Emily Fung (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central) and Ada Lauterbach (East Berne, N.Y./Berne-Knox-Westerlo) will add to the distance program. Fung is in a select group as one of the few women runners from New York who have earned all-state honors in cross country for six consecutive years. Fung also claimed the 3,000-meter state title and was part of the National High School record-setting 4x1,500-meter relay team. Lauterbach was an all-state performer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Alexandria Carlson (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and Laura Varble (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) join the UAlbany mid-distance squad. Carlson earned All-America recognition as a member of Suffern High Schools distance medley relay team, and also earned all-state honors as a member of the 4x800-meter relay. Varble brings an 800-meter time of 2:18 and was chosen all-state as the 600-meter leg of the intersectional relay.

The Great Danes add five standouts to the sprinting corps. Tenica Roberts and Rashida Charles are both high school All-Americans from Bay Shore (N.Y.) High School. Roberts, who earned All-America honors as a member of the distance medley relay, will compete in the 400-meter as well as the triple jump, while Charles will join the 100-meter and 200-meter competitors. Both were All-America members of Bay Shores sprint medley relay.

Nyree Richardson (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) was an all-state selection in the 4x100-meter relay. Elia Francis is a two-time all-state honoree out of Ursuline High School in Mount Vernon, N.Y., while Jennifer Adams (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) will add depth to the sprinting and jumping squads after earning all-state honors in the long jump.

Catie Coxon (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg) leads a group of five student-athletes that will be competing in the field events. Coxon is a two-time all-state discus thrower. Tiffany Bennett (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) is an all-state high jumper, while Ashleigh Whitfield (Freeport, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) will also compete in the high jump. Rebecca Power (Bellrose Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) will compete in both the pole vault and the javelin, while Emily Mino (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) is a two-time New Jersey state champion in the pole vault.

This is definitely the best recruiting class we have had here at UAlbany, we have added strength as well as depth, said Vives, who guided the program to 12 mens and womens America East Conference championships. We are looking forward to seeing this recruiting class in action. This class is definitely going to contribute to our fine tradition of winning conference championships and our move toward becoming a national level program.

Junko Kimura/Getty Images Team USA's leading scorer the past two years, Anthony is engaged to former MTV VJ La La Vasquez.
Sharp shooter
At the 2007 FIBA Americas tournament, where Team USA went 10-0 and qualified for the Beijing Games, Anthony again topped the team in scoring (21.2 points) as he started nine of 10 games (he missed one game due to a sprained ankle). Much of the team shot well at the tournament, and Anthony was among the best, shooting 61.3 percent from the field and 57.8 percent from 3-point range. In the process, Anthony set U.S. records for an Olympic qualifying tournament in points averaged, total points scored and most made and attempted free throws. He led or tied for the team lead in scoring in six games and scored at least 16 points in each of the nine games in which he played.
Physical play
Anthony is a constant scoring threat for his NBA team, the Denver Nuggets, but he seems to thrive in international play. He says it's because of the more-physical play. "I like playing hard and the physical play of it," Anthony said about international basketball. "I play out of position most of the time anyway. I play some power forward over there because we play small. So there's a lot of mismatches." Assistant U.S. coach Nate McMillan concurs: "I think it's a physical game and Carmelo loves physical play. He's one that doesn't shy away from it. I think he plays better the more physical the game is. And he was playing power forward for us a lot and that was right up his alley. That didn't faze him one bit, banging and fronting the post and driving the ball hard and the hand-checking and the contact and everything that is involved in international play."
Golden Nugget
Anthony was selected No. 3 overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Nuggets, a team that previously had not been to the playoffs since 1995. Anthony has led them to the postseason each of his five professional seasons, though Denver has yet to advance past the first round with Anthony. The 2007-08 season was the first in which he did not lead the Nuggets in scoring, but his 25.7-point average was good for fourth in the NBA; teammate Allen Iverson, also a 2004 Olympian, averaged 26.4 points. Anthony's best scoring year was 2006-07, when he averaged 28.9 points and was second in the league behind 2008 Olympic teammate Kobe Bryant (31.6).Anthony also made hisfirst NBA All-Star game appearance in 2007, andthe next year he was voted a starter by the fans for the first time.
Instant impact
Anthony was named to the 2004 Olympic team after a stellar rookie season, in which he was runner-up for the NBA Rookie of the Year award (2004 and 2008 Olympian LeBron James earned the honor). Anthony started all 82 regular-season games, averaging 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 36.5 minutes per game. In just his sixth NBA game, he became the second youngest player in NBA history to score 30 points in a game, doing so at 19 years and 151 days old. Later in the season, he became the second youngest player ever (19 years, 305 days) to score 40 in a game -- also setting a Nuggets rookie record -- by scoring 41. Nights like this helped make him an NBA All-Rookie first teamer, and helped him win all six Rookie of the Month awards for the Western Conference.
Syracuse stud
Before his successful rookie season in Denver, Anthony led Syracuse University to its first national championship in his only year of college (2002-03). He helped Syracuse to a 30-5 record and was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 Final Four. Anthony led the team in scoring (22.2 points), rebounding (10.0) and minutes played (36.4) en route to becoming the consensus National Freshman of the Year. In 2007, Anthony donated $3 million to the construction of a new basketball facility at Syracuse, which will be named the Carmelo K. Anthony Center when it opens in the fall of 2009.
Baltimore bred

Basketball Dads Soccer Moms

From their perspective, the basketball rim is as high as the sky. Despite the training hoop placed on top of the regulation one, it is still a long distance from their six- and seven-year-old arm reaches. At the final class of the basketball course, a match will be played.

Miguel does not take this game lightly. He is wearing socks with his sneakers, which is a huge statement for the boy who loathes them. Sneakers alone are fine. But now, socks mean "serious business." He made sure to have bottled water for the sidelines and practices his defensive stance during warm-ups. He does not seem to care or realize that he sometimes confuses his games and plays midfielder in an imaginary soccer game while everyone is playing basketball. Nor does he notice that the fact that he hates anyone to even lightly brush his body or touch him will make it very hard for him to defend anyone or ever get the ball to shoot it. Because he's wearing his basketball jersey, he's shown up to the game, and he loves to watch it on television. And he is, after all, wearing socks.

Go, Team, Go!
The other children on the two teams are about as skilled as Miguel. Some of them love the game, though they tuck the ball under their arms like a receiver and battle through bodies only to end up passing the ball to an opponent. A few just run after the ball, like little dogs chasing big dogs and wondering where the fight is going to be. A lone girl seems to get the point and takes the ball several times and scores. For the most part, it is a game of wee folk pretending to be giants. And I'm enjoying myself immensely.

The pleasure is interrupted, however, by parents who think this is the try-out for the Los Angeles Lakers. I had heard the terrible term "soccer moms" but never realized how many "basketball parents" there are, especially in the land of sunshine.

"Dribble!" a mother screams to her child. "Dribble, for God's sake! God! You look like you're running around with a brace!"

"Jeremy," a father says to his son repeatedly from the sidelines. "Jeremy, pass. Jeremy, shoot the ball. You have a clear shot! Jeremy, play defense! Jeremy, steal the ball! Steal it!" And when exhausted, issue-laden Jeremy comes to drink some water, his father does not let up: "Drink it all. You need to remain hydrated for the game. Finish your water, Jeremy. Finish the whole thing. Drink it."

Guess who's going to hate basketball by the time he's eight? Jeremy.

Giant Dreams in an Average-Size Person
As I look around the parents, I realize we're all about average height. Hardly anyone reaches six-feet even, except maybe Jeremy's father. We're a crowd of various cultures, none of which tend to crank out tall people. There are the rarities, of course, and you see them all in the Olympics right now. But, for the most part, we're regular folks with regular bodies.

And yet, some of these average-height parents with average-weights expect their children to show some destined-for-the-NBA moves. I look at how Miguel is playing. He runs around the entire time, makes one decent block and then tries to jump up and touch the net while his team is at the other end trying to score. For a moment, I hear the other parents' shouting at their children and think, "Maybe I should say something, too. I mean, Miguel does need to know how to play, right?" As if he doesn't know. As if he hasn't seen countless San Antonio Spurs games on television.

"Miguel, dribble!" I shout and immediately feel stupid. I feel like I've slipped into the Dark Side. The Emperor was too tempting. Luke Skywalker might succumb to the pressure. My shout echoes in my ears. Miguel, despite hearing me, does not dribble. That's normal. The kid is focused on the game. Sometimes. Or focused on enjoying himself. He is not focused on his chubby mom on the sidelines.

Beside me, I hear giggling and notice another mom. She's seated on the grass, holding her little girl. She asks me which son is mine, and I point out the blond one. She says, as everyone always does, that he does not look like me at all. I ask her which son is hers. She points to the one who has the ball thrust into his hands, gets nervous, spins around, runs away for a little bit then tosses the ball into his opponent's hand. Jeremy's dad shouts at his son to retrieve it, rescue the team. The lady beside me giggles at her son's actions. It's not a mocking sound. It's affectionate.

When it's time for a quick break again, her son comes running up to her. She caresses his face, speaks to him softly and he smiles and bounds into the game. He likes the game and it shows in his springy step.

Jeremy comes to the sideline, gets nonstop coaching from his father, looks irritated and trudges back into it. His father's dreams weigh heavily on his shoulders.

That's My Boy
And Miguel? He pounds down half the bottle of water, he is red-faced and sweaty. For a moment, I wonder if Manu Ginobili had parents who shouted advice to him from the sidelines or perhaps they just hugged him and giggled at his mistakes. Both seem extremes. Did they give him advice lightly on the drive to games? Did they smile at his sillier moments? His father was a coach, so there must have been pressure yet he plays with joy and intensity.

As Miguel puts his water bottle back into my bag, I realize that he's just a little kid, a six-year-old boy with a baby-round face and a sweet, wide grin. He likes running, likes the ball, and likes to shoot now and then.

At six years old, he does not need to consider career options.
