“Youve got to be kidding me!”
Here we were on our red-eye from San Diego to Newark, NJ on Thursday night. Deb Finucane, Heidi Davis and I were all finding our seats very uncomfortable and with VERY little room to recline. It helped that I didnt sleep much the night before, so I was able to grab a few hours of sleep on the 5 ½ hour flight. Still, we were all wrecked upon our arrival. We still needed to grab our connecting flight to Buffalo and drive the 3 hours up to Barrie. We had ended up renting a mini-van since Laurie Chong and Moriah Alexander would be joining us for the drive.
Deb was quite the trouper, acting as our chauffeur. Laurie Chong was a very efficient navigator and the rest of us acted as amusement for the ride. Lauries assistant was dubbed “Greta” a GPS unit we rented from Avis. Crossing the border into Canada was fairly easy, even when a flustered Deb dropped our passports as she was handing them to the customs agent and he was slightly perplexed about how the 5 of us would be coming from California to play in a ball hockey tournament. We stopped at one of the ubiquitous Tim Hortons for lunch. We would share a giggle over the “TimBits” that were purchased. To be honest, I couldnt tell where the popularity of the chain came from. Their sandwiches were decent, but I definitely have had better donuts in my time.
After muddling through mid-day Friday traffic in Toronto, we found ourselves at the rink around 2:30 PM. The rinks were empty since the tournament, which would gather 68 teams, started at 3:00 PM. We took a few moments to groggily pass the ball around the court to get a feel for the rink nuances. The surface was a “waffle” grid of plastic tiles. We later found out that they play year round in the rain and snow. Only in lightning conditions do games get called off. The ball definitely moved differently on the surface and rinks were slightly smaller than what we were used to.
Our first game was at 6:00 PM. Instead of driving up to the resort we were staying at (25 minutes away), we decided to stay and watch the 4:00 Ladies B game. Nearly half of our team was from Barrie, and 4 of the ladies in on this “B” team would be playing with on our “A” team, including our goalie Krista. The ladies (Sheila, Dawnn, Elle, Andrea, and Michelle) we would pick up from Barrie were very solid players. The only disappointment was with my ex-boyfriends co-worker in Toronto, Erica, who showed up for our first game, but was a no-show for the rest of the tournament. I received an e-mail from her later saying she had come down with Strep throat.
We started rather slowly in our first game, as one might expect from a team that has never played together. In hindsight, I think we could have beaten the Sockets, a local team from Barrie, but it was not be for our exhausted team. We ended up losing 2-0, but still earned a ½ pt for having tied a period 0-0. We did not learn about the head-to-head scoring until after our first game. It was time to go get something to eat and we headed to a local restaurant near the rink with our Barrie teammates. The service was so slow, that Deb, Moriah, and Laurie would take their food to go to be able to go watch the 8:00 womens game. Heidi, Sabine, Sabines boyfriend Paul, and I would head to find the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) and a grocery. We had 9 in the 2 bedroom suite, including our returning defender Wendy from Massachusetts and her 19-yr-old son Jacobus. Some enjoyed 20 Bees wine-in-a-box and Moriah received good-humored ridicule for having brought a trashy romance novel for her reading material. Moriah, Deb, and Laurie ended up sharing one of the king sized beds without problem.
Team Injury status: one strained groin, one dinged forehead (from my suitcase).
We woke up Saturday to be treated to breakfast-ala-Paul, who had been a saucier in NYC. Our suite had it all except salt and pepper (and a roasting pan, which was listed in the rooms FAQ as something that could be retrieved from the front desk if needed). We would later use the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and jacuzzi tub (though we were disappointed to find the jets didnt work). After breakfast, we headed to the rink to watch our next opponents play in their 11:00 game. It was raining and we were shocked to find the games were still on. An additional shock was that no one seemed to be phased by the fact that games were being played in this condition. The rain did give us a slight reprieve from the normal stench of cigarette smoke that permeated the area. We were a little dismayed to see the team from St. Catherines, called Rectangle Auto Supply, were a far better team than the Sockets. Sabine, Deb, and I headed over to enjoy the resorts hot tub and pool. Before every game I spent a half-hour warming up my beleaguered groin. There was also time for a yummy home-cooked lunch at a restaurant called Loobies near our hotel. We noted that they had 7 desserts on the menu, and we decided we would come back later to get “one for each of us”.
Rectangle Auto Supply ended up beating us 6-1, but the game was actually a lot closer than it sounded. We were all very impressed by the womens skill level. They all moved without the ball, passed a lot and had very accurate shots. I could very well see this team contending against a team of men from our league back home on this smaller surface (where speed and break-aways were not as important/common). This second loss landed us in 8th place in the tournament and we would be playing the 9th place team (Dunlop Billiards, another local Barrie team) later that night as a play-in game for the play-offs.
Team Injury status: one strained groin, one dinged forehead, one fat lip, one scraped knee, one girl with strep throat (down to 12 floor players)
We munched on fruit and lunch leftovers under the umbrella of our mini-vans trunk, since we would be playing in a few hours. The rain had abated for our 4:00 PM game, but it would be sprinkling at the start of of our 7:00 match. The gridded plastic tiles allowed for drainage, but we been warned that a light sprinkle was the slickest of conditions to be playing in. Jason, Michelle Smellies husband, had started to coach us in the previous game. Before the third game, he asked if I would play defense. Im not sure why he decided to put me there, but I decided to make the most of it (even though it would mean I didnt get to play with my hockey soulmate Deb).
We came out very strong against Dunlop Billiards and the majority of play was in their zone. Most of of the players, sans Deb and Dawnn (whom actually embraced the conditions by sliding on her feet around the court), were playing more hesitantly. Even though we dominated the play, we found ourselves down 2-1 at the end of the second period. Jason had come over to commend me on my defensive skill (he wondered where it had come from which I guess means he thought I was kinda sucky until that point), when Moriah put in the tieing goal in the 3rd period. Overtime went without scoring and we found ourselves in a shootout. Dawnn was our first shooter, and had a beauty of top-corner goal across the grain. It was the only goal we would end up needing as Krista stopped the next 3 shots. Hooray! We were in the play-offs! Unfortunately, this meant we would be playing Rectangle Auto Supply again the next morning, since they had come in first place in the round-robin. We were off to get one of every dessert from Loobies.
Team Injury Status: one strained groin, one dinged forehead, one fat lip, one scraped knee, one girl with strep throat, one bruised wenus, one “waffle-butt”, one lacerated labia from an opposing players stick blade to the groin (down to 11 floor players)
Loobies was closed! Oh no! We ended up heading to the restaurant across the street. John Mousmoules, a gentleman we play with in San Diego, had come out to watch us play that day since he was home visiting family in Toronto and Barrie that week, joined us for a drink while we had dinner. It was after dinner that the injured labia requiring 3 stitches was discovered. One car would head to a nearby hospital and the other car headed back to the hotel to crash.
We finished up our leftover groceries for breakfast, checked out of our hotel and headed to the rink for our 10 AM game. The rain had passed and there was only a little dampness to the ground. We were all exhausted (late night and 3 games of hockeys in hand). Rectangle Auto Supply would quickly prove their dominance against us. Im not even sure what the final score of the game was (the scoreboard only would show a 5 goal differential, so it sat at 5-0 for the entire game). Tom, the league coordinator in Barrie, told us that the team from St. Catherines had won the championship 3 years in a row, minus the last year. He also said no team could really match their fire power in the tournament. We scratched our heads as to why we were slated to play against them in the initial round of play. Tom had coached us in Philadelphia, and had told us he thought we could contend in the A division. In hindsight, I think we should have been in the B division. We all thought that the level play in Philadelphia was more along the lines of play we saw in the B division in Barrie. As it turns out, Rectangle Auto Supply would lose in the finals in the first overtime 1-0 to another local Barrie team, Canada Cartage Beavers. I have to say Im a little shocked, since I hadnt seen a team there as good as the Rectangle Auto Supply, and I wonder if any of their players had gotten injured on their way to the final game. They only had 10 floor players to start with.

Hockey players are constantly moving, practicing, and playing. It slows you down when you're working so hard on an empty stomach, or even worse, one full of all the wrong foods. Have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. It's a whole grain with soluble fiber, which means it soaks up unwanted fat and cholesterol in your blood, making sure you're not carrying around any extra baggage throughout your workouts. It also contains the GOOD carbohydrates, meaning your energy is increased, more efficient, and longer lasting. It slows the absorption of glucose, so you won't feel too hungry as you work hard, either. Add some milk, fruit, or nuts to give it some more taste, and enjoy your whole day.

Itapos;s taken me almost one year, but I"m at the halfway point of Eclipse.

It shouldnapos;t have taken me this entire year to get here, but I suffered a setback I wasnapos;t counting on. It wasnapos;t a loss of interest, but it was a definate feeling that something really important was missing. I could still tell the story, and I did, but I couldnapos;t shake the feeling that this was going to be a flop unless I figured it out.

Last week I figured it out.

Villains...true villians cannot just be "Oooh, Iapos;m evil. Iapos;m scary. Bow down to me or I will destroy you." They need a backstory. (This wasnapos;t an epiphany I had never considered before, it was simply something I came to the realization that I hadnapos;t done yet) In Morning Star, the villains have little development, because it was SUPPOSED to be that way. They took backseat to the struggles of my hero trying to figure out what was going on in the chaos around him. Now that theyapos;re taking center stage in the second installment, I had to do sometihg to bring them from Point A where they were normal people, to point B where they were bent on bloodlust. One of the things I love the most about shows like Eureka, and Battlestar Galactia are that the villains are usually a breath away from being heroes themselves...the problem lies in the execution of their plans...how they go about bringing the order they perceive to be perfection into being.

Iapos;ve done that. By going back in each chapter and giving just ONE of the five remaining villains a backstory, Iapos;ve created a sense of wonder even in myself. How did she go from being a loving mother who simply wanted to create an unending power supply to save her people from extinction, to the bloodthirsty murderer Iapos;ve presented in Book 2? It was something I never considered doing for this character, or for this series, at least...this early on. There were plans to describe the whole backstory of the villains later on, but this is so much better, so much more beautiful.

And my excitement, my need to get this story out on paper has returned. In fact, Iapos;m pissed off that I canapos;t write tomorrow I might even start using my prep period to write again, like I did towards the end of Morning Star.

Eclipse...you might just be my favorite.

Adam would crack open an eye to stare at the ceiling after his light doze had worn off. Heapos;d sigh harshly with a laugh on his breath that died fast as a twinge slowed him down considerably to lift his head at Nathaniel. Heapos;d yawn lightly and stretch cautiously under the blankets before Carter charged across the bed and unceremonously ripped the blankets off and pooling them on the floor in one fell swoop.

Adam recoiled, gasping at the colder air before growling at the wolf who had stretched his forearms to the floor, butt cocked in the air and tail wagging humorously. Heapos;d roll his eyes before slowly making himself sit up on the bed and swing his legs over the edge, a hand protecting his midsection for no reason. "I should of warned you of the wake up calls. Carters internal clock never quits." Heapos;d add in an annoyed fashion smoothing down the flimsy shirt given to him. Heapos;d shake his head before getting up slowly and gruntly his discomfort. Carter would disappear into the closet and grab a black sweater before bringing it to him, and heapos;d tug it over his head and smooth it down his front carefully.

Heapos;d shake his head at the idea of boots. Shoes werenapos;t needed currently. "Shall we?" Heapos;d chirp, carefully walking out of the room in his bare feet. Carter would walk beside him, keeping beside him through the worst boughts of the pain at jarring broken and cracked bones. Heapos;d look between Adam and Nathaniel, concern gnawing his mind as they reached the clinic and Adam would push his way through the door with a grunt. Tired of the pain already but managing to spot Skyler as he gestured to a table. Heapos;d carefully work himself up on the table before shuttering a sigh.

Deep green eyes would settle on Nathaniel, pinning him with a deadpan stare of authority. "Master Duncan requested that you meet with him in the garden. Adam," He turned to the parasite in question before cocking a brow at his pale face. "Iapos;ve been notified by her.. Your seal will fight the healing spell.. Thus allowing only a partial healing despite our best efforts, she wont allow us to help further."

Adam frowned deeply.. He already knew and obviously didnapos;t need nor want anyone else to see such a thing, so the idea of Nathaniel having his time preoccupied was helpful to what dignity heapos;d have left. "I already knew that. Get on with it."

Carter would keen loudly with sympathy before turning and nipping Nateapos;s sleeve and tugging gently to follow. Heapos;d turn and brush his way through the door and lead him away from the scene. It would take a bit of walking through the maze of corridors and hallways before leading him through a set of doubled doors of thick red wood into a massive garden. Trees where everywhere, shrubs in decorative spots. A large pond on the right and a view of the mountains behind the kingdom in their majestic blues and purples.

Carter would wag his tail gently at the sight, before taking his nose to the cobblestone walkway and sniffed carefully, picking out the right scent and following it. It would wind through the garden to the kingapos;s known favorite spot, beneath an archway of saplings, their branchs locked together tight. Beneath sad a young thing of a man, long blue hair draped over his shoulder to a darker blue robe. Thin pale arms held the robe closed to keep the chill away, along with a thick scarf. Carter would ruff modestly, tail wagging quickly in recognition as heapos;d sit next to Nathanielapos;s foot and look between the two.

Duncan would stay silent for a moment before turning on his heels, a pale face framed in blue locks eyed him over carefully in through, dark blue eyes studying briefly before heapos;d smile in a friendly. "Nathaniel, yes? Iapos;m Duncan." Heapos;d chirp pleasantly, looking back to the scenary for a moment, then turning altogether and walking to him slowly, carefully holding down the limp that wanted to make itself obvious. Heapos;d approach Nathaniel with a hand outstretched for a shake.

"How are you feeling? Everything to your liking, hopefully?"

Following his team's 24-21 to Eastern Michigan, Gregg Brandon naturally wasn't in much of a talkative mood. Today, however, he was back to his normal self discussing issues from Saturday's game as well as looking ahead to Akron this coming weekend.

--While Brandon was talkative as usual, you could still tell that the loss was bothering him. As we can all agree, you just can't lose to EMU this year. They're awful.

--Every Monday after we interview with coach, we talk to players we requested so we can write our various stories and such throughout the week. Today, for the first time since we've been covering football for this newspaper, no players were made available. The reasoning was "The kids have midterms and need the shortened week to study." This reason is B.S. Over half of the classes at this university don't even have midterms, and many of the ones that do will schedule them for the week AFTER Fall Break. And the football team has no shortened week, because they aren't gong anywhere for Fall Break. They've got to travel to Akron on Friday or Saturday. To top it all off, we got a bit of a chuckle in when we saw three players casually walking through the Sebo Center during the time where they were supposed to be hard at work studying for all these midterms. Personally, we would've just preferred a direct statement like "since we lost Saturday, we'd rather not have the players talk more about it to the press." In the grand scheme of things, missing out on the two player interviews we scheduled isn't a big deal, as we've only got three issues this week. Coach and the SIDs are always nice and accommodating. We're not mad about it. We just thought the excuse was incredibly lame.

--Brandon addressed one of the main issues from the loss as being untimely errors and penalties. As a veteran team, these mistakes shouldn't be happening, and it is something that needs to be fixed. "Every game we play the rest of the way is going to be like that one," Brandon said to his team following the loss. "They're going to tough, physical games that may come down to a play or two at the end of the game.

--Antonio Smith was called for interference on a punt, which was a very questionable call by the officials. Brandon believes that the ball should have been BG's ball at the spot where Smith recovered the punt.

--Because BG was picked to win the MAC East before the season, every single MAC tam wants to beat the Falcons. Given that fact, the Falcons need to be mentally ready for every game whether it's against a ranked team or a MAC opponent. "We have to show up with same intensity that if we're playing Pitt or Boise or whoever in this league," Brandon said.

--The injury report looks good for the Falcons. Willie Geter has a strained ligament in his knee which kept him out of the Eastern game. Otherwise, there is just the same small nicks among players like Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes.

--Akron has a unique defense that no one else in the league runs. The defense has been used for years and BG has seen it before. Brandon was also sure to mention Bryan Williams, Akron's kick returner is towards the top of the nation in kick returning. The Falcons also need to get at Chris Jacquemain, who has seen vast improvement this season which means BG needs to show many different defensive schemes to get him guessing.

--A big question after the game is should Brandon have let Tyler Sheehan throw a hail mary pass? Brandon's answer to that: "I thought about it. I didn't say it to anybody," Brandon said. "I thought Sinisa [Vrvilo} could make the kick. He's made 50 plus yarders before." Brandon was also sure to make sure that it is known that the missed field goal is not the sole reason the team lost the game.

Wow, this new semester is taxing me mightily with work.

I've got tons of papers to grade and I am almost finished with my latest novel, so instead of writing for my usual one hour a day, I have been writing 3 or 4, which leaves me little or no time to blog.

Sorry about that, guys.

Instead of answering emails this time, I am going to post a few weird dreams I have had and maybe you can tell me what they mean . . . maybe they represent winning lotto numbers or something.

When I finish the new book (in the next few days), I will be able to start blogging again with regularity.

Dreams

1. I needed money to gamble and my account only had $200 in it, so I went to my youngest son, age 5 or 6 it looked like, and asked him for $400.

He said, "Okay, papa," and hopped on his bike and came back with $400.

When I saw the money, I decided to press my luck and said, "Really, son, I need another $1000."

He said, "Okay, papa," and hopped on his bike and came back with $1000.

When I saw this, I said, "Son, I really need $10,000 . . . is that okay?"

The 5-year old (who in real life is 14) said, "Okay, papa," and hopped on his bike and came back with a bag full of money. $10,000!

So I put the money in my wallet and noticing that he disapeared to use the bathroom, I snuck into his bedroom and took out his bank pass book (which no one uses these days). To my astonishment, his balance read, $300,000,000! My 5-year old was a millionaire.

Now I became very exited.

When he came out of the bathroom, I said to him, "Really, son, I need $100,000."

He said, "Okay, papa," and when he came back from the bank this time, I put the hundred grand in my wallet and headed for my car to go to the casino and gamble.

My wife stopped me at the door.

She said, "Do you not even want to know where he got the money from?"

I hadn't thought about that. "Where?" I said.

She said, "From his father."

"But I am his father."

She said, "No! Tommy is his father, and you don't even care!"

She stormed off loudly weeping and shedding big tears, and I shrugged and headed for my car. Whoever Tommy was, I would deal with that when I came back from the casino. For now it was time to gamble.

2. My father and I were on an island. I think we were stranded there. I was sooooo hungry. Somehow it came to my attention that my father was not as hungry as I was. Somehow I noticed that he was gaining weight despite being stranded on the island along with me. I begged him to tell me his secret.

He refused at first, but finally broke down and told me.

He said, "I learned this trick from years of sailing on the high seas as a merchant marine. Sometimes on the ship, we run out of food for weeks. When there is no other food, we prepare and eat our feces. But you have to do it the right way. Here, let me show you."

He took me to a tree, reached up into its leafy branches, and pulled down a square, brown cake of his feces that had been hidden up there. He handed it to me. It didn't smell so bad, but it felt heavy and solid like a rock in my hands.

"Eat up," he said. "It's not as bad as it looks."

I took a bite. It was nasty. Now inside my mouth felt like it was full of spiderwebs. And there was something crunchy in my mouth, too.

When I looked down at the cake of my father's feces, it was oozing bloody human fingers. I tried to spit it out, but the stuff was sticking to the inside of my mouth. My mouth was oozing blood.

3. I had a dream about my mother, who passed recently, and I don't remember whether she was actually in the dream or whether she was just a ghostlike voice, but she ordered me to read her journal out loud. So I read it out loud. I don't remember what I read, but she shouted very angrily, "No, don't read it in order. Read it backwards in the mirror."

I took it to the mirror and read it out loud backwards.

It read, "Hop home on your one foot, demon day. Hop home on your one foot, demon day."

I said, "Mommy, what does it mean?"

These were the words to a silly tune she used to sing to us, playfully teasing us (her sons), whenever we lost to her at checkers or some other game. I never understood these words, though as a child I used to squeal with delight when she sang them.

"What does it mean?" I pleaded.

She said, "Look in the mirror again."

I looked in the mirror again.

The mirror was cracked.

4. My daughter was in the backyard with my mother-in-law. My daughter, who is now 18, was a toddler of maybe 2 or 3 in the dream. She was wearing a little blue jeans overall dress set and a deep red shirt underneath. My daughter was lying on her back, and my mother-in-law Was trying to teach her how to pee on the grass.

country.
The critical expertise for a decision-maker is just that, their experience in making irrevocable decisions. Its the fact that the decisions dont allow that calls to question the character, values, philosophies, and fundamental nature of candidates.
Barack Obama has repeatedly shown that he cannot or will not make critical decisions. He votes more often than not, rarely makes clear statements of what exactly should take place, and has never indicated what his underlying philosophy is for making decisions.
The reason Sarah Palin has captured the imagination of so many people is that she is decisive, isnt afraid to stand by her decisions, and clearly states her core values. Those values inform all her thinking and decision process. America is tired of flim-flam politicians without values, whose decision-making process is the public opinion poll.
Executives are charged with defining the overall direction for the organization. Their job is to manage the strategic plan, keep the enterprise best interests in mind, continue the leading position of that enterprise, and grow the business. EVERYTHING else is the job and business of their expert advisors, management team, tactical planners, and production line.
To say that the President of the United States must first have expert knowledge of every process involved in the day-to-day operations of the country is ridiculous. What fundamentally matters is that the President (and by assocation, Vice President) must have a strategic vision for the future of the nation.
A strategic vision is exactly that; a vision! Such a vision, which becomes a plan, can be built either on values and a moral structure, or built on wishes and dreams. Either way, when interviewing a candidate for the position of CEO, the key questions are more about the quality of their decisions, how they arrived at those decisions, and the resulting consequences of those decisions.
Barack Obama has routinely made decisions, only to discover that they were the wrong decision. When confronted with the results, based on what actually happens in reality (not someones delusions), Mr. Obama has either denied that he made the original decision, or tried to say that everyone can be wrong and he would have made a different decision had he known the future. His main regret, apparently, is that he isnt experienced in clairvoyance!
When Bill Gates went to capitalize Microsoft, the lenders werent all that interested in whether or not he understood the ins and outs of Wall Street, and whether or not hed ever taken a company public. There are specialists who can be hired, whose job it is to guide the company through an IPO.
Likewise, the captains of the worlds largest ships and tankers, in almost all cases will bring on a pilot with special knowledge of a particular port, when bringing that ship in for docking. Sarah Palin isnt required to have any special expertise on the details of foreign policy, international business, investment banking, money supplies, fighting terrorism, and running a national military. There are experts who already know all about those fields.
Nobody believes that Barack Obama is an expert on international politics or financial management. It doesnt matter because he, like McCain, Palin, and Biden dont need to be an expert on these fields! But what experts will Obama choose to make recommendations? Will he include recommendations opposed to his ideology? Will he be objective in his analysis? And fundamentally, what is the Obama vision for the future of America?
Nobody knows; its a mystery.
John McCain and Sarah Palin (his backup) are required to make irrevocable decisions with far-reaching consequences. Those consequences will not only affect all Americans right now, but will affect the United States into the future across many generations. Its the irrevocablity of these crucial decisions that matters! There wont be any if a bad decision about terrorists leads to a nuclear explosion over New York City.

Shockingly, Politkovskayas murder was not an isolated incident, but rather, a disturbing addition to an ongoing purging of journalists critical of the Putin and Medvedev administrations. The most recent in the purge was Magomed Yevloyev, owner of ingushetiay.ru, a website critical of Ingushetiya President and close friend to Putin, Murat Zyazikov. Immediately upon arriving in Ingushetiyas capital city of Magas, Yevloyev was forced into a police car and hours later dumped on the side of the road with a bullet in his head. The Russian government responded to this issue, stating that the unlikely Yevloyev had reached for a policemans gun during the drive and the gun went off, shooting Yevloyev in the head.
Worse than the actual killings themselves is the lack of thorough investigation of these murders, a suspicious indication of state involvement. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) sites at least twelve murders of Russian oppositional journalists, not including Yevloyev, all of which remain unsolved and without competent investigation. Included in these killings is the particularly chilling murder of editor-in-chief of the investigatory Tolyattinskoye Obezreniye, Aleksei Sidorov. Reminiscent of the assassination of Leon Trotsky, Sidorov was stabbed in the chest with an ice pick outside of his apartment.
In fact, so atrocious are the human rights violations against vocal dissidents of the Russian Federation, that the CPJ has ranked Russia the ninth worst country in regard to freedom of the press. According to CPJs statistics (based on a ratio of unsolved murders of journalists per 1 million inhabitants), Russia is more repressive than turbulent nations such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, and is ranked only slightly more safe than countries such as Nepal or Afghanistan.
Not only does the Russian government repress and oppress dissidents, but it also pays a pretty penny to keep the mainstream media staffed with pro-governmental supporters who report the Putin-friendly version of the news. One of the effects seen of this was Putins approval rating during his presidency. As late as July 2007, he enjoyed a cushy and popular 80% stamp of approval. Undoubtedly, his photo shoots in the woods with his shirt off, holding an AK-47, or that of him in his Judo outfit, or that of him yet again appearing shirtless on fishing trips, have won him much popularity among the people. Ladies swoon at his beefcake-like photos and there is even a cult-following of the young in Russia who nearly deify him: Pop songs are written about him, propaganda praises his name, and many Russians feel that he has revamped national pride and identity, similar to that which existed during Imperial Russia. However, such strong feelings of national pride caused by Putin and the inflated high-approval ratings are a result of the aforementioned controlled media. During the Second Chechen War, when Russias military bombed purely civilian targets, carried out extrajudicial executions of prisoners and civilians, and was even accused of using tactics ranging from rape, abduction and torture, the average Russian citizen heard little of Russias atrocities. Only the victories of the Russian army were reported alongside the shocking and horrifying deeds of the Chechen rebels tactics, including the Beslan school hostage crisis in 2004, where rebels took approximately 1,200 people captive in a local grade school.
Likewise, the use of what Barack Obama in the September presidential debate deemed as and actions of the Russian military in Georgia were not widely publicized in the Russian media. Even Politkovskayas idea of the internet, where information is freely available seems no longer truly free: Putin continues to extend his long arm online this time by paying governmental supporters to release propaganda in his favor. For instance, European Digital Rights (EDR), an organization devoted to protecting the freedom of information in Europe, observed one such incident out of many. An anti-Kremlin march was being organized by bloggers protesting the Russian government. Within hours of finding out about the protest, pro-Putin bloggers swamped the internet with information about a pro-Kremlin march, so much so that they crowded out all oppositional blogs online. Included with Putins new task of controlling a new form of media, is his idea of starting a separate Russian internet, isolated from that of the rest of the global community. Under lightly veiled concerns about financial hacking and the spread of child pornography, this new internet would greatly increase the ease at which it could be controlled, which is precisely what Putin intends to do.
With the ongoing suppression and murders of oppositional journalists adjoined with Putins dominance of the old media and seemingly inevitable domination of the new, one can only be reminded of the Soviet Unions iron grip on the media and the duping deceit of its citizens. The exception is that the Russian Federation now considers itself a democracy. However, progress cannot truly be made and democracy cannot truly exist where the media is controlled by the government, facts are distorted or omitted, and opposition is crushed.

"Last season brought many changes to the OU Hockey landscape. OU graduated a core group of players who appeared in four straight ACHA National Championship games, winning three National Titles in that span. With a new look lineup last season that included 14 new names on the roster the Grizzlies would skate to a record of 23-12-0 and appear in their 9th straight ACHA National Championship tournament. With a solid core returning for the 2008-2009 campaign, including last year’s OU Hockey Rookie of the Year Kevin Kranker and senior defenseman Jarrett Samp, the Grizzlies will be looking to return to the top of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

Forwards
(Returning 8, Lost 2, 7 Newcomers)
Kevin Kranker leads all returning scorers after an impressive freshman campaign that saw him score 29 points in 34 games. The Grizzlies return two seniors upfront with Scott McGillvray and John Parrish. Parrish scored 17 points last season on 7 goals and 10 assists, while McGillvray netted 3 points after appearing in 25 games. The OU Hockey program returns four juniors, each looking to have a breakout season. Brett Haugh, Chris Leja, and Kyle McMahon all spent their freshman campaigns on the OU Hockey DIII squad. Haugh put up impressive numbers with the ACHA Division I team last season recording 19 points in 32 games. Kyle McMahon and Chris Leja each bring a hard working attitude to the rink each night and both put up 8 points last season. After completing one season at NCAA Division III UMASS-Boston, Cody Austin joined the Grizzlies for the second half of the 07-08 season. A two-way player, Austin scored 5 points in 16 games as a Grizzlie. Jesse Worrell and Jim Moran are the lone returning sophomores. Worrell netted 14 goals last season and 20 points in 31 games. Moran spent the 07-08 season on the blue line but has made the transition to forward for the 2008 season and will see time at both defense and forward.
Seven talented new comers will join the OU offensive corps. Rick Delecke transfer to Oakland University from NCAA Northland College where he amassed 7 points in 25 games. Jordan MacDonald comes to OU after a successful campaign with the Metro Jets of the CSHL. Joe Guenther last played for the Marquette Rangers in the NAHL. Mike Murray joins the Grizzlies from the NAHL Champion St. Louis Bandits. Thomas Mullen is a rugged forward who played for Detroit Catholic Central. Brandon Johnson played last season for Notre Dame Prep in the MHSAA. Adam Hoffa brings a hard-nosed style of play to the rink and last played for the Flint Generals in the Central States Hockey League.

Defense
(Returning 4, Lost 2, Newcomers 3)
OU returns four players on the back line including two seniors in Jarrett Samp and Nick Ranck. Samp is coming off his most impressive season after netting 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists. Ranck returns as a solid presence on the back line, garnering 18 points in his three seasons with the Grizzlies. Dennis Capa and Collin Ronayne both return for their sophomore campaigns. Ronyane is a big rugged defenseman checking in at 6’4 and 225 lbs. Dennis Capa provides a sparkplug style of play on the blue line and netted 7 points in his rookie season.
Oakland University Hockey will see three new faces on the blue line this season. Brandon Jacobs joins OU from the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies Midget AAA program. Brandon Krefski last patrolled the blue line for Orchard Lake St. Mary’ and Kyle Stansik comes to Oakland via the Victory Honda Midget AAA team.

Goaltenders
(Returning 2, Lost 1, Newcomers 1)
OU returns two goaltenders and one talented newcomer. Collin Chase is entering his junior year between the pipes after leading OU to the ACHA Division I National Championship his freshman season and again playing over 1300 minutes in his sophomore season. Andrew Stewart returns to the Grizzlies after appearing in 5 games last season. Newcomer Alex Pikunas comes to Oakland University after a stellar season between the pipes for the Metro Jets in which he played in 45 games and posted a 89% save percentage. All three OU goaltenders will be pushing for playing time between the pipes.

So the NHL preseason has begun and for many they did not notice. The NHL now considered the fourth major league in North America is now over shadowed by the likes of the NFL, MLB, NBA, and even NASCAR.

Well I am a huge hockey fan and adore the NHL. I also have a girlfriend that doesn't like hockey and a roommate who has a girlfriend that loves the Steelers and the NFL while he doesn't like sports. So this got me to thinking...what about all those people out there who have family/friends/loved ones who adore the game and they desire to join in the fun by having a favorite team? I'm sure this list actually is kind of small, but I know stuff like this happens as my roommate chose the Steelers as his favorite football team to be a part of something meaningful to her. Another reason I came up with this idea is actually due to my Sixty Feet, Six Inches cohort who attended his first NHL game last March and wanted to pick a favorite team. I lead him through a series of questions to determine who he wanted to be a fan of, with the final answer being the Boston Bruins.

So without further explanation behind the reasons why this seems like a great idea here is: The Sixty Feet, Six Inches Guide on How to Pick a Favorite NHL Team

Alright so let's start with where you either currently reside or the place you call home.

If it's one of these cities:

Anaheim, California
Atlanta, Georgia
Boston, Massachusetts
Buffalo, New York
Calgary, Alberta
Chicago, Illinois
Columbus, Ohio
Dallas, Texas
Denver, Colorado
Detroit, Michigan
Edmonton, Alberta
Los Angeles, California
Miami, Florida
Montreal, Quebec
Nashville, Tennessee
New York City, New York
Newark, New Jersey
Ottawa, Ontario
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Phoenix, Arizona
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
San Jose, California
St. Louis, Missouri
St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota
Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida
Toronto, Ontario
Uniondale, Long Island, New York
Vancouver, British Columbia
Washington, D.C.

You need to go no further than this point. If you live in the metro area or consider one of these cities home, they should be your team. Local teams need all the support they can get. If you think your local fans are dickholes and don't want to associate with them, I strongly urge you to then be a fan that isn't like them. Supporting home teams is a big deal to me because they represent your city, they represent you.

Now if I was unable to sway you or you just don't live in an area with a team (like Indianapolis), we can now move further to other options. I'll list categories and give each team a score for each category listed except logo because that's completely subjective. Now before going any further think of what you want in a team. Is it a logo? Is it a storied history? Is it recent success? Maybe you want a team with a huge fan base, or maybe you are the sort that actually loves cheering for a team no one else seems to like. Perhaps you hate a certain city with an intense passion and you want to be a fan of the team that is their rival. It is even possible that you might pick a team you'd have the best chance of seeing in person (team plays at a family vacation spot, or in the city where friends/family live). This is sort of key before moving on because it will allow you to know what you want and look straight at the scores.

Ok, now one final thing before we get to the scoring. Think about any hockey fans that are close to you (family, friends, significant others). Who is their favorite team? Maybe you would like to join in the camaraderie of rooting for a team together, or maybe you're that sick sort of person that wants to cheer for the rival. So maybe this is your stopping point. Otherwise, let's begin!

Here are the categories I have made:
Logo, History, Overall Success, Recent Success, Stanley Cups Won, Popularity, Captain, Rival(s).

All scores are on a 1-10 scale, except for the categories that are asking for a specific number or name.
