This was a good weekend, you know? I seriously needed one like this.
Saturday morning: I had my third knitting-of-le-sockage class, and it went really well; the baby-booties (completed now) were duly admired and critiqued (apos;not at all bad for a beginnerapos;) and the other socks were looked over. I was, yes, pronounced as a definite masochist for doing intarsia in whatapos;s really only my second full set of socks, but apparently I did it right. **cheers**
Saturday afternoon: Me, Morgan, John, Patrick and Linda all took our sandwiches and side-dishes and (as rain was threatening over Mt. Lemmon, our original goal) headed over to Agua Caliente Park. It took some doing, getting there; we went a rather roundabout route, but eventually arrived and settled down for lunch. The weather was beautiful, really-- cloudy, but breezy and cool enough to be perfectly comfortable. We pigged out and fed ducks and fish (we saw the Great Albino Catfish God again), visited the warm spring (which I once more illegally climbed down to check out) and generally had a nice, relaxed time. It was good to see everybody; I may hermit too much, but I havenapos;t forgotton my friends and it looks like they havenapos;t forgotten me either. **happy**
Today: Did some necessary cleaning around the apartment-- changed the litter boxes, swept a bit, that sort of thing. Went and took care of the rent; visited a yarn store, apos;Purlapos;sapos;, which was outrageously expensive (didnapos;t buy anything; too broke and I donapos;t need any more yarn right now). And then I tackled the big cleaning project: the 30-gallon aquarium, which has been doing poorly. Man, I drained it COMPLETELY dry after I caught my four remaining fish; I took out all the pebbles, washed apos;em off with hot water, washed all the large rocks, cleaned dead leaves away from the plants, scrubbed the glass, cleaned and refurbished the filter... And then I put everything back together again. It looks MAGNIFICENT. Clear water, no gook in the filter-- Iapos;m going to snag some more plants and a new light when I can; not sure if my poor beta, Alpha, is going to make it, though, heapos;s not looking good.
Aaagh; my muscles ache from hauling 30 gallons of water from the bathroom into the living-room, but it was worth it.
Tonight: knitting on a secret project I came up with; not gonna tell what. Other than that, mostly just relaxing with all the windows open... It feels so good outside, cool and clear. The desert has a particular scent in the Autumn thatapos;s hard to describe-- it isnapos;t a dead-leaves smell... If anything, itapos;s a cool-stone taste in the air. It smells amazing tonight.
Tomorrow Admin Review really gets going at work-- we have to haul all the binders over to our main building and arrange apos;em in order, many dozens of them. Hope to gods everybodyapos;s got their shit together, we canapos;t do it all. And the State peopleapos;ll be here on Tuesday, so... Here goes. Gonna be a busy week
Have a good one, yapos;all.

Gambling is legal in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek, Colorado. The casinos in these historic towns depend on gambling dollars from tourists and locals to survive.
But under the current gaming rules, a gambler may only wager a maximum of $5 per bet on the blackjack table. It is nearly impossible to beat the house over the long haul under these conditions. Why? The slight edge the house enjoys every time a player makes a bet, even as the player is employing the best blackjack strategy, will ultimately wear the player down.
Arguably, the best chance one has to win any significant amount of money, while limiting the downside, is to bet progressively with house money as one starts to beat the dealer. If one is lucky enough to win several hands in a row, the number of chips on the table in front of a player can suddenly escalate.
There are various strategies for managing the way one bets, however, though one thing is certain: Play the same amount every hand over a long period and the time spent pursuing profit will hardly have seemed worth it.
For most folks, the $5 wager is child’s play. Winning $5 carries no excitement. Anticipation can never build. Boredom with the task at hand overcomes any initial titillation.
Good chance, as of this writing, that an initiative will appear on the November, 2008, ballot in Colorado to raise the limit on blackjack to $100. This factor alone would greatly advantage the player over the current situation. No dollar limits would even be better.
The initiative also calls for adding craps and roulette to the mix of games allowed in these casinos. The addition of these games would greatly enhance the gambling experience for most people. Not all folks like to play the slots, you know?
These towns will help to give a Vegas a run for its money. Well, not exactly. Vegas will not care. But tourism in Colorado will grow. The hotels, bars and restaurants will prosper. Tax revenues will explode. Everyone will be happier. Very little harm will come to society by these modest ballot revisions.
The travel website, GamblingResort.com provides information about the various casino venues in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. It is a great resource for those planning to visit a gambling destination here or anywhere else in the country. One can find all sorts of useful information, including photos, casino statistics, map locators, addresses and phone numbers for every casino in the USA and beyond. One can also book hotels at GamblingResort.com. Give it a try.

In the afternoon on Friday, September 5, we left Reno on our way east toward Denver, where wed visit Sarahs sister Lisa in a week or two. We had planned to take a southerly route, perhaps visiting Capitol Reef National Park and Hovenweep National Monument along the way. As Sarah drove, Brian fired up the laptop, and using our mapping software (Microsoft Streets Trips), found out that a more northerly route through Salt Lake City was quite a bit shorter. On that route, we could explore Salt Lake City and visit Dinosaur National Monument, and then we could drive across Rocky Mountain National Park from the west entrance to the east. This new plan seemed just as good as the old one, so we switched plans.
In the road atlas, Brian found a national forest campground called Angel Creek that was just a few miles off I-70 and seemed like a good place to stop for the night. After a few hours of driving, we got off the highway and followed Streets Trips recommended route to the campground. The forest road that the software said to follow for five miles turned out to be just a tire track through grazing land. The route was level, though, and easily passable by Caroline, so we kept going. We got to a closed gate, and in hindsight, thats where we should have turned around. But we didnt. We opened the gate, which we assumed was there just to fence off grazing land, rather than to demarcate private property, and drove on through. We went through several more gates, and then the road started getting worse. The tire tracks got deeper, to the point where the middle of the road was a foot to two feet above the bottoms of the ruts. Caroline doesnt have that kind of ground clearance, but still we pressed onward, driving with Carolines left wheels in the middle of the road and her right wheels on the if you could call it that, on the right of the road, so she was straddling the right tire track.
Of course, a track like this doesnt really have a so really, Carolines right side was off in the weeds. The plants in the desert of Colorado are quite a bit hardier than those in, say, the forests in the Northwest, and every so often, wed hear this piercing screech as some spiny or thorny plant raked Carolines right side.
After driving about four miles, we started to lose track of the road. We had driven into a more fertile area, and our track just seemed to dead-end in a grassy field. By now, the sun was long past set, and we couldnt see anything beyond our headlight beams, but after some searching, we found a faint track through the field. We followed that and quickly found the reason that the vegetation had changed: a creek bed that ran straight across the road. The good news: It was dry. The bad news: It looked like about a two-foot sheer drop-off to get down into the creek bed, and we couldnt see the opposite side in the dark.
At this point, we were only a mile away from the end of this crazy road, so we really wanted to get past this creek bed. Brian got out of the car with his headlamp and scouted for a route. As it turned out, the drop-off into the creek bed wasnt as severe as it looked on our initial approach. And after some careful navigation through large rocks at the bottom of the creek bed, it looked like the climb out on the opposite side wasnt too bad. So Brian took the wheel and managed to successfully navigate the creek bed without bottoming out. A few more scrapes of the right side of the car and one scrape of Carolines undercarriage, and we made it to the end of the track. Our directions told us to turn right onto another forest road, which didnt look appreciably different in Streets Trips but turned out to be a paved highway! After the first five miles took us over an hour, the last two to the campground took less than five minutes.
Surveying the damage proved difficult because Caroline was so covered in dust. She had lots of lines on her right side, but many of those were just lines through the dust, while others were scratches through the clearcoat. After our next carwash, we would do another survey and discover that Caroline had quite a few new scratches. Her abusive parents force her to lead a tough life. At least her brand-new drivers door came out unscathed.
After a pleasant night, we headed out the next morning. The route back to the interstate took us further east and was entirely on paved roads we definitely should have taken that route into the campground. It would have been five miles longer, at least half an hour faster, and way less painful for Caroline.
In any case, we continued east to Salt Lake City, where wed gotten a deal for another three-night hotel stay in Draper, Utah, a little ways south of Salt Lake. We figured wed enjoy being indoors for a few more days, catch up further on our blog, run errands, etc. On Friday, we visited the SLC farmers market and then headed to a visitor information center, which happened to be right across from the capitol building.

What does “après” really mean? In Reno-Tahoe it simply means “fun after a day on the slopes.” It means thawing out with warm food, warm drinks and good friends. It means keeping the excitement rolling all night long with 24-hour Nevada-style gaming and endless entertainment. It means indulgent spa treatments. In other words, it’s Reno-Tahoe.
The 22,000 acres of skiable terrain and 18 ski resorts within 90 minutes of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport offer a wonderland of adventure for every skill level. But when the sun goes down and the lifts close, the après ski options are just warming up and there’s no better place than Reno-Tahoe for a play all day, play all night experience like no other.
Spa Treatments
The fastest way to unwind after a day on the snow and in the sun is with a soothing massage or scrub at one of Reno-Tahoe’s luxurious hotel spas, each with its own menu of signature treatments designed to relax the mind and body. Indulge in a rich chocolate massage or facial at the Atlantis Casino Resort or inject a sizzle of summer into your day with a Pure Fiji Island massage at John Ascuaga’s Nugget, a treatment sure to melt away the chill of winter. The downtown Siena Hotel, Spa and Casino offers everything from day-long treatment packages to a quick fix with a Chair massage for 15 minutes of pure bliss. Or, revitalize the senses and rejuvenate the body with a signature treatment, lakeside, at the CalNeva Resort, Spa and Casino or the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino, offering the Springs of Life Mud Wrap, a treatment guaranteed to soothe tired muscles as it is made from all natural Moor Mud, legendary for its therapeutic ingredients.
Restaurants and Dining
Skiers hungry after a day on the slopes can refuel at any of Reno-Tahoe’s award-winning restaurants ranging from casual hamburgers and hot wings to fine steakhouses and exotic ethnic options. Reno’s hotel casinos offer all-you-can-eat buffets where diners can indulge in everything from steak to lobster and a never-ending spread of salads, sides and desserts as well as a selection of specialty restaurants and cafes. Or, sample Reno’s exclusive selection of all-you-can-eat sushi at locations including Oceano at the Peppermill Hotel Casino, the Atlantis Hotel Casino Sushi Bar and Kokopelli’s inside Circus Circus.
Entertainment
Laughter is the best medicine for skiers with sore muscles and sunburned faces and Reno’s comedy clubs have just the prescription. See up-and-coming comedians at Silver Legacy’s Catch a Rising Star Comedy Club or take in a raucous stand-up show at the smoke-free Funny Bone comedy club at the Sands Regency Casino Hotel.
Extending beyond comedy clubs and cocktails, there’s big-name performers and traveling Broadway productions. Hotel casinos like Harrah’s Reno, the Eldorado Hotel Casino, Grand Sierra Resort and John Ascuaga’s Nugget welcome top name entertainment throughout the year as well as host regular shows in their extensive showroom facilities. The Reno Events Center also has a full lineup of concerts, events and headliners with past performances from top-name entertainers such as Gwen Stefani, the Blue Man Group, The Who and Aerosmith.
Nightlife
Wash it all down with a little liquid refreshment. The Chocolate Bar in downtown Reno features drinks and desserts made from chocolate. The Truckee River Arts and Culture District also serves up its fair share of watering holes, including Satellite Cocktail Lounge, home of the best mojito in Reno, and trendy nightclubs such as Vino, Tonic, Liquid Lounge and the Green Room. Keep the après ski party going all night long with exotic island drinks and dueling pianos at Rumbullion’s Island Bar, Reno’s only rum bar, inside the Silver Legacy Resort Casino, or taste their way through the 102 flavored martinis at Roxy’s Bar and Bistro at the Eldorado Hotel Casino. Also a hopping night spot is Brew Brothers, a microbrewery in the Eldorado that hosts live music in a casual atmosphere.
Gaming
And of course there’s the endless thrill of dancing with Lady Luck at the casinos, all offering 24-hour Nevada-style gaming, as well as beginners’ games for those just starting to learn the ropes. From craps to roulette, blackjack to poker and everything in between, Reno-Tahoe offers the classic table games as well as the ever-popular poker and progressive slot machines.
Indoor Adventure
When taking the family out on the town, consider the Grand Sierra Resort’s indoor golf center and play virtual courses from around the world all winter long. Boomtown Casino Hotel also boasts indoor fun at its 30,000-square-foot Family Fun Center, complete with miniature golf, a 3D movie theater, an antique carousel, a Ferris wheel and arcade. Circus Circus in downtown Reno has all the Big Top fun under one roof featuring acts from the Moscow Circus and the Imperial Acrobats of China in addition to midway games for the kids and a full range of gaming for the adults.
Venture deep below the Reno streets and visitors will find “Magic Underground,” an underground theater devoted to 1800s-era magic and illusion, complete with a Museum of Antiquities and Curiosities. With all this and more, there’s no shortage of ways to entertain the kids after a day of skiing in Reno-Tahoe.
